No idea. Two guesses on a Facebook group are Doug Collins & Steve Kindon. But I’m sure it’s neither of them?

Btw. It v Wolves. September 1970. We lost 2-3.
Edit: obviously not this game. The pitch is a giveaway.

The pitch looks scary! The ref obviously couldn’t be bothered wading through the mud to keep up with play!!

David Wilson for me. Cup-tie,3rd round Jan 1970 and I recall the pitch being very muddy for that game. Won 3-0?

Whoever it is must read the game well. Not a bit of dirt on him despite the muddy pitch.
Obviously doesn't need to make a tackle.

Been posted that it’s the 3-2 defeat against Wolves which was the following week. If so, that was the game with the worst refereeing performance ever from George Hartley.Silkyskills1 wrote:David Wilson for me. We've had this before on the old board, and the answer was David Wilson then as well.

You can see the Half Time Scoreboard in the background.
On the odd week the guys putting the numbers in would have a 5 and the crowd would be wondering which letter and team had scored 5.
Those were the days.

Not sure why I've said Hankin, but the record books have him down. I'll get it checked out.RammyClaret61 wrote:I was sat in the Stretford end for that game. I also thought it was Bradshaw who scored.

Sammy Todd had smoother hair and was uglier!Working_Class_Zero wrote:This photo is labelled on Pintrest as:

I'd go for Dave Wilson too, through on goal and missing another chance. I don't think he scored at all for us. He always looked to me like he wore contact lenses but I don't know if he really did.

Re: Who’s this Claret from 70/71?
No doubt that it is David Wilson, that's probably the closest he ever came to scoring for us !
Some confusion as to the actual game which is no surprise as we played Wolves at home three times in the calendar year 1970. Two league games and the FA Cup tie. The second of the league games was the 3-2 defeat but the photo in the OP was surely the 3-1 defeat in January when Ralphy scored our goal.

Re: Who’s this Claret from 70/71?
I posted 3-2 but it was a typo and should have been 3-1 in the game played a week after the cup tie. Wilson didn't play in the 3-2 game in the following season.
You are certainly right royboyclaret, it probably was as close as he got although the week before in the cup tie we did think he'd scored but it deflected off someone else and he wasn't credited with it.

Re: Who’s this Claret from 70/71?
Another interesting comparison of those three games shows that even in 1970 the magic of the FA Cup was still alive.
The two league games had attendances of just over 13,000 whilst the Cup tie was 19,397.

Mick Docherty. Steve Kindon. You might as well say Madge Thatcher for all the likeness of those two players. Can you tell the difference between a football and a rugby ball? Did you marry a marrow?

I remember watching Ray Hankin put us one up at Old Trafford only for them to come back and beat us 2-1. Pretty sure it would be the 75 Christmas game. I went with my dad and grandad. First time I had been to a match where the local youngsters ' looked after' your car for a small fee.

Mate of mine used to go on City, at Maine Rd, and would tear a couple of pound notes in half and tell em they could have the other halves if them and the car were there when he got back.RMutt wrote:I remember watching Ray Hankin put us one up at Old Trafford only for them to come back and beat us 2-1. They did it in the 60s in the terraces of Tod Rd. as soon as they had enough the eldest went on.

I must admit, my initial thought was Sammy Todd, but Wilson it is on reflection.
What's wrong with the pitch ? Proper conditions for proper footballers with no
poncing about and falling over at the first opportunity.
A game for men. (and black boots)

Think I'm right in saying that Dave Wilson never scored a goal for us. The other thing I remember about him was that he wore contact lenses. Was on that Cup tie. The referee was very poor. I seem to recall one or two fans got on pitch at the final whistle and I remember Derek Dougan having to restrain one of them.

Yeah, okay funky. Just seen earlier posts. Royboy has already confirmed that Dave Wilson never scored for us. ...and I recall now that we played them in the league before the Cup tie and it may have been that game which turned a tad ugly at the final whistle.

BTW: The teams v Wolves in January 1970 were the same for both games:
Peter Mellor, Fred Smith, Jim Thomson, Brian O'Neil, Martin Dobson, Dave Merrington, Frank Casper, Ralph Coates, David Wilson, Arthur Bellamy, Steve Kindon.
In the league game, Dave Thomas came on as a sub for Kindon - no sub used in cup tie.

My recollection of the 3-1 defeat was Derek Dougan coming on as sub at a corner at the Cricketfield End and scoring with his first touch.

Re: Who’s this Claret from 70/71?
The main thing I remember about that game was we were invaded by about 10 million Wolves fans. Got to the game and as I was going in someone said 'don't bother even trying the longside'. I got in and saw a sea of black and gold on the longside, couldn't get anywhere near. Not sure I've ever seen so many visiting fans at the Turf. That was in the day when the FA Cup actually meant something.Silkyskills1 wrote:David Wilson for me. Cup-tie,3rd round Jan 1970 and I recall the pitch being very muddy for that game. Won 3-0?
The following week we played them at home again in the league and there were about 300 of 'em. We lost that one I recall.

Absolutely no issue with the referee for the cup-tie, which we won easily. It was the 3-1 defeat the following week, (in which as you correctly say Dougan scored), that the referee might as well have been wearing a gold shirt. This, I think has been established is the game in which the picture was taken.
