So why have we even bothered to put in a bid?

Re: 10mill bid for Worrall
I've just found the quote from Dyche:Goobs wrote:We all know Dyche thinks Taylor is capable of filling in at CB and with Ward on his way back and already having two fit FB's as well as other player who could fill in as a FB/WB (depending on if we change system) then I suppose he may feel we still have cover.
If we can get the right person in then great, but there is no point in getting in someone who could well be surplus to requirements again in another 4 or 5 weeks.
“Usually, you try to carry four (centre backs) if you can, who are all runners and riders. Not really younger ones, but ones who are pushing. But it’s hard. Everywhere else, we’re pretty balanced, other than losing Robbie (Brady) and longer-term stuff.
“So we’ve worked hard to find that balance, and I’d suggest generally, apart from the centre-half position, and Robbie’s injury, I’ve found that balance.”

Re: 10mill bid for Worrall
How can any player be 'surplus to requirements' in a squad with so many injuries currently, the possibility of more in the next 14 games along with probable suspensions?

Re: 10mill bid for Worrall
That is why I said "potentially" and "in 4 or 5 weeks" as by then the injured parties could all potentially (bar Brady), be back and therefore if we sign a lesser player than those we already have then once everyone is fit they would potentially no longer be able to get in the squad.Silkyskills1 wrote:How can any player be 'surplus to requirements' in a squad with so many injuries currently, the possibility of more in the next 14 games along with probable suspensions?

Re: 10mill bid for Worrall
" Having said that, Dyche said yesterday that it was the only position he felt we were short in and ideally we would have four central defenders.
Well praise the Lord. At last the truth comes out - almost. Ideally, we would have 5 cbs. Basic minimum for a club with a £100m annual budget is 4 surely.
If we don't get one now and end up having to play anyone other than our existing 3 cbs at cb, then it will be negligent. No other word for it. As I have said numerous times for months, we have had best part of a year to find somene suitable and people are still talking about the none cbs Ward and Taylor being adequate at cb and one of then is injured (well touch and go whatever that means). Incidently, Cork would be the best option by a country mile, but that would cock up midfield.
Also, if SD does not think we need a proper nr 10, it would concern me. Of course he does really, but won't let on so as to keep any price down. The fact that he now says he needs a cb imo hopefull means he has his man.
Our game playing on transfer has worked ok in the past. This time it would be a massive mistake not to get the cb and nr 10 we desperately need, as our stock has never been higher. Ditto our ability to offer 4/1/2 year deals. This boat may never sale again. So go on just pay Forest what they want for the next Tarky, we can well afford it.

Re: 10mill bid for Worrall
We need another CB and I agree with SD that it's probably the only area of the squad that needs strengthening now.
We have adequate numbers in all other areas so there's no point in jumping in and buying another striker or midfielder. Pope is good cover for Heaton, Taylor for Ward, Long for either CB, Westwood in midfield, Arfield for whoever, Barnes / Vokes for Wood. The only issue at the moment is the sheer number of injuries. You can't legislate for this type of thing happening. Yes you might have to live without 2 or 3 first teamers at a time but not 6 (given we're without Heaton, Ward, Tarky, Defour, Brady and Wood tomorrow night).
SD has played it just about right so far by bringing Nkoudou and Lennon. That was the only position where we looked really weak at the end of December. If we can bring in a CB today/tomorrow then it will have been a successful window IMO.

Re: 10mill bid for Worrall
Why do we have to have this every single transfer window? Dyche and the board will not (and nor should they) just "pay Forest (or anyone else) what they want" If we did that for every transfer, then other clubs would constantly take the proverbial and we wouldn't have a pot to **** in very quickly.
We need to make sure we get the right player at the right price (or what we feel is right), something the club has been very good at over the last couple of years.

Re: 10mill bid for Worrall
Generally I would agree Goobs. On this occasion we just need to get a cb in - one that is a good investment that can be shaped into what we want. The difference between £6m and £10m with Worrell is absolute peanuts. Mark my words a few games without both Tarky and Ben and we will drop like a stone.

Re: 10mill bid for Worrall
So even SD thinks we need another CB which is good, but it can't really be called negligent that we haven't got one and actually may well not have by C.O.P. tomorrow, as some are saying here. We may have a few quid in the bank these days, but we HAVE to get the right one and not just chuck money at some useless panic buy (Lecott anyone??) It's not JUST a numbers game and if the players we really want won't come or their clubs are playing hard ball (Worrall/Forest for example?) then there's not a lot else SD can SENSIBLY do except keep his powder dry for another time.

Re: 10mill bid for Worrall
If we ended up paying £4m extra for Worrall and as a result ended up finishing a couple of places higher up the PL then surely it pays for itself rather than gambling (as we did with midfield a few seasons back) that our centre backs will go throughout the rest of the season injury/suspension free.
If we offer less than a young player with potential is actually worth in today's market is the selling club really playing hard ball?

Not if your bonus system pays out by league position - in that case it just gets divided up between the squadkentonclaret wrote:If we ended up paying £4m extra for Worrall and as a result ended up finishing a couple of places higher up the PL then surely it pays for itself?

We made a sizable transfer profit in summer and yet we're being stingy over a few million quid. We're becoming a parody of ourselves

Re: 10mill bid for Worrall
We're obviously keen on Worrall if we're contemplating a third bid.
It'll probably go to the wire and we may need to pay a tad more than we'd like but
ultimately we do need another centre half - be it short or long term.
Hopefully this one will come off as we'd be up the creek if Tarks and/or Mee got injured.

If anyone else is bidding for him we will lose out.
Re: 10mill bid for Worrall
Gawthorpe sources said "strong possibility" of Worrall.
Let's hope that is the case.
I'm still hopeful on at least 1 new arrival.

Re: 10mill bid for Worrall
Fingers crossed we sign someone as cover for CB. We all know we are desperately shirt of cover here, and even if he signs, we need at least one more CB in the summer. Charlie Taylor should only be considered there a an absolute emergency, as he is a LB. We should look to move on from square pegs in round holes, especially given the recent profits we have made.

But Matt Mills being linked with a move to Barnsley. That would be 2 out with only 1 in.
