What is the point? Makes cricket look exciting.
Can anyone tell me what is remotely interesting about it? Why are the bbc covering this nonsense. Waste of the licence fee.

Only cricket is that tedious and timewasting.

I'd get it if I had the time to watch it properly. But this is what sport is all about - you watch a bit and you either like it or you don't. I watched the Rugby World Cup... it went downhill after the opening ceremony. The sport itself was dreadful.piston broke wrote:Fantastic sport but if you don't get it you never will. If you had grown up in the US and watched our football youd think the same. Ball in play for about an hour. Wrong decisions every match. Players constantly cheating.
It is what it is. Im not a fan but watch a bit of the superbowl each year. The level of detail in cosching/tactics is way beyond our football.

Don’t like American football but am obsessed with proper football and GAA as well as a bit of rugby union.
I have no doubt if I was raised in the US to American parents I’d be totally different.

Re: Nfl
I've only just grasped NFL for the last few years with the sky sports coverage and have to admit it an intriguing sport.
The rules are quite straightforward and can be picked up by anyone really (my missus sporadically watched the playoffs whilst being otherwise glued to her phone on candy crush) and was able to follow play.
The main problem are the breaks between every 1/4 or 1/2 where everything is over analysed and sponsors make the most of such breaks in play to advertise their nonsense.
I really enjoy watching NFL but can't justify waiting up for the amount of hours it takes to complete a game.

Re: Nfl
The sport isn't 'NFL' it's American Football.
It's fantastic, especially at the College level (usually higher scoring, variety of offenses).
If you cannot be bothered to learn the rules to actually begin to understand the game, then you cannot criticise it because to do so would be moronic.

Re: Nfl
I like American football, but I can’t watch a full game. Far more entertaining watching the highlight version with all the stoppages cut out.
Rugby union, now that is just one big borefest. Far to many rules, and the ball out of sight far to much. Also very stop start. I believe in most matches the ball is in open play about 23 minutes. The rest of the time they stand around forming & re-forming scrums. Also playing advantage only to bring it back for the original penalty a couple of minutes before, again time that’s wasted.

Part of the issue is probably stupid Americans thinking the players are disrespecting the flag or the armed forces during the protests.Foulthrow wrote:Isn’t NFL struggling in the US these days with lowering viewership? Might be a lesson for the PL there about how far you can flog the golden goose

I've watched NFL on and off for years, never been a serious watcher nor picked a team but it is entertaining.
Thinking of going with the Vikings for family reasons.
As for the breaks etc, they're there for a reason but I can't remember what it is.
They've just sold the advertising rights for those breaks.

I won't be watching it. Any sport that claims the winner to be the World Champions when all the teams are from the same country can **** right off

Breaks at a 2 minute warning in both the second quarter and fourth quarter, breaks between all quarters where the teams change end, half time, and breaks because each team gets three 'time-outs' per half where they can temporarily stop play. There are also breaks when the ball changes hands

Re: Nfl
I started watching it when I was a kid and it used to be on channel 4 (before all the sky business, and when there was sod all exciting on). There's loads of people who don't like it and find it boring, but what I would say is that once you start getting into the rules, it's very intriguing. The tactics are especially detailed but because people don't really get it, it's considered sh1te by some. I played for a very short time and I must admit to purposely not buying into all the wooing and shouting and general gruntery (because we're from the UK, not USA), so I get that bit being annoying to some folk, but the game itself can be bloody good, and I think the rise in popularity with sky and the London games is evident that people are starting to 'get it'

Burnley's first home game took nearly 2 hours but only had 47 minutes of actual game time. Getting short-changed in this sense is a problem in a lot of sports nowadays.KRBFC wrote:It's taken 100 minutes to play 30 minutes, nowt like dragging it out
The length of the halftime in the Super Bowl is a bit much though. I definitely wouldn't want to sit through a 40-minute interval at the Turf (unless of course we brought Chico and 'chip footballs into a giant pie' back).

Some sports are pure sporting occasions wham bam the whole thing over and done inside 2 hours including getting on, half time and getting off at the end.
Some are more a family day out like NFL and Test match Cricket.
Bursts of activity interspersed with reading the newspaper and having a nap.

If you are a fan you are never bored. You are checking who is coming on and going off, coaching the game in your head, will it be a run or pass play, where are the mismatches on the defence, etc.,Caernarfon_Claret wrote:Some sports are pure sporting occasions wham bam the whole thing over and done inside 2 hours including getting on, half time and getting off at the end.

The only trouble with watching on Sky is they go off for adverts. If you are at the game you get big screen replays, cheerleaders plus all of the above to do. It's a great day out.

It is claimed World Series was named for the New York World newspaper. However, when it was first contested, the AL and NL were the only two baseball leagues in the world, so it made sense, kind of, then.Sidney1st wrote:I thought it was just baseball they did that with?

Mine wasn't a criticism I like longer sporting occasions.
NFL is like several 100m sprints, maybe 110m hurdles interspersed with chess moves.
