The worlds most powerful rocket is set to launch this evening (Weather permitting) at 20:45 UK time
This is the rocket that can land it's self. the payload being sent into space is a Tesla car.
Here's how it's supposed to go down...

Link for live launch http://www.spacex.com/webcast" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
although you can search youtube for other links.

He's had a bit of stick for this, but personally I think it's pretty cool.
He even called the dummy in the car Starman.

I bloody love this kind of stuff.
As a kid we were promised hoverboards and the rest by now, Musk seems to be determined to deliver

Some of the manoeuvres the rockets are going to perform really are out of the comics/tv/movies.

Was watching this anyway and came to the messageboard after to see if anyone else had watched - absolutely incredible. The way the two boosters landed! :O I was clapping and cheering in my seat. Not remotely ashamed to admit it.... incredible!

Blimey... that electric saloon car goes faster than a Bugatti Veyron.
From Veyron write up " With even closer interaction between tyres and the four-wheel drive system, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport generates lateral forces of up to 1.4G, and unmatched acceleration in any conditions. " Now that ain't true - mis-selling.

Fantastic. While our country whines and whinges about everything, the likes of Elon Musk just get on with making the world an amazing place. He may make 10 mistakes for every success but that’s what you need. We need to teach kids in our schools to have that kind of entrepreneurial zeal. We’ve lost it and need it back. The Yanks are great at times.

The central booster unfortunately landed in the sea about 300 ft from the floating pad, travelling at 300mph. The booster only ignited one of the 3 engines required for landing.Funkydrummer wrote:The third one landed on a floating landing pad, smack in the centre.

Re: SpaceX Launch
are there not huge doubts into weather his new rocket is financially viable? The whole point in having a reusable rocket is to make it cheap, but all the extra weight needed for the rockets and fuel to land them cancels it out. He even said the rocket launched the other day had a 50/50 chance of success, it's hardly a ready made replacement for the space shuttle.

Re: SpaceX Launch
I’m amazed UTB (no, sorry, scrap that, I’m not in hindsight) that you’ve attempted to find a negative to my uplifting post desiring for more entrepreneurial spirit in the UK and praising the Yanks for it. It really does say something about lefties, even fairly reasonable eloquent ones like yourself.UpTheBeehole wrote:Elon Musk is South African/Canadian, he's not a Yank.
Turns out it is also factually wrong as well as daft and hypocritical (after all the debates on here in the last year correctly insisting that permenant migrants are treated as part of the UK).
Musk is an American citizen. He has to be. Rockets are advanced weapons technology, and everyone at SpaceX has to be American.
He chose to go to America. He chose to become a citizen 10 years ago. He did it for a reason. Presumably their entrepreneurial culture appealed to his maverick nature? It reflects well on him, and well on the US. I could never imagine the likes of him choosing to come to Britain, and it saddens me.
Re: SpaceX Launch
Just because something is possible doesn't make it a good idea, if it's not economically viable it will fail. SpaceX isn't making money, its rivals are.starting_11 wrote:And nor will it until they can develop the technology to do so... and by NOT doing it they won't. By doing it they will.
