Anyone still querying........
Why Sam Vokes hasn't been starting ahead of Barnes?
We could do with a bit of a clear out and a new face or two up top in the summer.

No, but let's hope that we (club) are going to try and move away from immobile forwards who can do a job, but really aren't good enough at this level.

He's been a great servant, as has Barnes, and both were key players in our promotions, but if we are to establish ourselves as a regular fixture for teams in the PL, then upgrades on both are necessary.Bin Ont Turf wrote:No, but let's hope that we (club) are going to try and move away from immobile forwards who can do a job, but really aren't good enough at this level.
I'll remember them both with fondness though.
Re: Anyone still querying........
I’m always in favour of creating more than scraps of chances for our forwards. Then judging their returns.

It is a shame that Gray decided to leave though. We could’ve done with him in our current predicament. Instead he languishes on Watford’s bench. A bad move for him and us.

He wasn't great for us last season, and he's hardly set the League alight at Watford either.

Every forward that's ever played has had to do a bit for themselves and not just had everything handed on a plate.
Re: Anyone still querying........
Wood is so much better than both of them. His loss is massive

They do a fair bit for themselves ,to be fair. We serve them practically nothing.

The Andre deal was a great bit of business for us.

They do (Barnes more so) and they weren't helped at all today, but it isn't just about today.Dike Muff wrote:They do a fair bit for themselves ,to be fair. We serve them practically nothing.
Vokes has no variation though and is easily marked.

Totally agree been fantastic players and servants to the club and been a huge part in our success but we need better up front next season if we are to continue to progress.Bin Ont Turf wrote:No, but let's hope that we (club) are going to try and move away from immobile forwards who can do a job, but really aren't good enough at this level.

All part of SD's masterplan ie GK's and defence sound for most of his tenure Midfield vastly improved over last 2 years and still 7th in prem, just wait for more improvements up front over the summer Great to be a Claret right now, steady progression over time UTC

Is this the same Andre who is doing so well at Watford ?

We will need to look at alternatives to the striker situation in the summer (again)

I'd start him next match with Barnes and see what he can do. He may bring something a bit different, and maybe a goaljojomk1 wrote:We've got Nakhi Wells
After all, he's cost us more than Ings, Austin, Vokes and Barnes combined.

Andre did manage to get on for another 8 minutes today in a Watford defeat at West Ham --he must be good because he replaced Richarlison!

Agree with a few others.
We need to use some of the wealth, which we have pretty much guaranteed for next year, to improve our options up front.
I think once Wood gets over his injury problems he’ll be a big plus but we need to locate at least one other who’s better than we have.

Re: Anyone still querying........
BoT is spot on. For all that our forwards werent helped much we had more chances than Swansea. That our most likely looking scorer was JBG says a lot.
Im frustrated Wells isnt getting a look in at all. He must be dreadful if he cant get more than 10 minutes which begs the question why did we waste 5m

Re: Anyone still querying........
It's a law of nature. It is an absolute certainty that if you make several signings, one of them must be the worst of them. Big money signings in 2017 were Wood, Cork, Taylor, Wells, Brady, and Westwood. Total cost about £50m. Why has one (or two) of them not worked out, so far? Because that's life.BabylonClaret wrote:BoT is spot on. For all that our forwards werent helped much we had more chances than Swansea. That our most likely looking scorer was JBG says a lot.

Re: Anyone still querying........
So did just lumping the ball up continually actually prove anything about Vokes & Barnes? We were not at it today.
It's almost like SD looked at the pitch (which wasn't actually that bad) and decided how we would play. For the entire game.
It wasn't pretty and it didn't work.

He's not better on the ball than Barnes. He and possibly Barnes should be upgraded in summer though.

Theres me thinking we have just established ourselves for a third season with them two up front! Clearly it is all a dream!fidelcastro wrote:He's been a great servant, as has Barnes, and both were key players in our promotions, but if we are to establish ourselves as a regular fixture for teams in the PL, then upgrades on both are necessary.

Any forward would have struggled with the types of chances we created today, therefore it is unreasonable to judge them on this showing.
I thought the snap shot efforts they did have on goal were incredibly skillfull, especially Voke's efforts, technically great.
Cut them some slack they have got us this far, and I feel with improved service/ attacking tactics they will start bagging again soon.

We are we are, largely because of our defensive unit, not because Vokes and Barnes have bagged a shed full of goals each.
Neither of them are ever going to be prolific at this level, and that's why they will both probably be upgraded in the Summer, assuming we stop up.
It's called progression.
Re: Anyone still querying........
Strange what people see isn't it.
My best mate is a united fan but comes to most games with me. I'm slowly winning him over in that respect. Interestingly he thinks Barnes is one of our best players.
I agree with him. Barnes is a very very strange type of player, there aren't many strikers in the premier league that can control the ball with every area of their body when it's being hammered at them, he can. For a team that punts the ball up top a lot you need a player who can do that. Can anyone name me a realistic target who can do the same job as Barnes but also scores loads of goals? Wood can score, but he doesn't bring others into play half as well as Barnes. When the quality of the balls forward improve that's when we will need to try somthing else, at the moment I couldn't see anyone else doing any better.

Re: Anyone still querying........
Criticising a striker who hasn't had a run of games is hardly helpful, no matter who they are or how long they've been around the club.
Never more so than for forwards they don't talk of getting "into the groove" for nothing.
