You'll be telling us next that there's no such word as 'sayed'. Perhaps you think it should be 'said'.

Re: There is no such word as payed
There is such a word as "payed" - when used as a nautical term.
Re: There is no such word as payed
We can all make the odd spelling mistake, but 'of' instead of 'Have' really grates my goat.

I think that is the general concensus amongst the social media generation.Westyd wrote:Calm down as long as we know what it means who cares about grammar and spelling

There are lots of people, teachers included that don't seem to bother with spelling and that carries over to places outside social media.
Some of the emails I used to get from graduates were really poor.
Language evolves but there appears to be a rapid decline in the willingness to learn how to spell.
Quite often I have to read some posts on here several times because I simply don't understand the context.
I left school without any qualifications whatsoever but am proud that we learnt to spell as part of our edjewkashun.

One of mine is the use of disinterested, when they plainly mean uninterested. Everyone has their language kryptonite.

A professional writer would never favour bold over italics for emphasis or use exclamation marks with such reckless abandon.ZizkovClaret wrote:I do. I write for a living and it drives me bloody potty

I find the older I get the far more precious I get about correct use of English, so hopefully standards are not falling as badly it would seem. At least that is my hope because our language is used around the world for far more reason than we had an empire.

"I seen" a phrase used most frequently by footballers and pundits.
It's " I saw" or "I've seen"

Listen to Scottish or North-Eastern football pundits/commentators. I don`t think they were taught the present perfect tense up there. "He has did that 3 or 4 times now." They`re all at it!!!!tim_noone wrote:I try not to be a grammar nob.i really do? Shouldn't it read you really don't??

Re: There is no such word as payed
I'm with the OP, however the ODO gives both as valid, although all of the example sentences use 'paid' as opposed to 'payed'.

Re: There is no such word as payed
Lady G was writing a poem about Donald Trump, yesterday. She's eight, and her spelling is reasonable for her age. She used the vernacular "wanna' a couple of times, instead of the more formal "want to". I was fine with this, once I'd corrected her spelling of it. She had committed the school-girl error of only using a single 'N'. Even informal words have proper spellings.
