From twitter
One shoe bomber tried to blow up a plane and now we are forced to take off our shoes.
1606 mass shootings since Sandy Hook Elementary School and Congress has done NOTHING.

And yet nobody says a word about the real reason for this problem, which is the easy availability of guns.

Actually, Congress HAS done something. They pray. So far, no response. And I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Another day, another mass shooting in the States
I read somewhere that more Americans have died from gunshots since 1968 (just 1968!) than in every U.S. war combined.
Around 1.4 million Americans have been killed in warfare over 240+ years, and well over 1.5 million civilians in the U.S. have died as a result of a gunshot in just 50 years.
What a country.

Re: Another day, another mass shooting in the States
American society it seems to me, needs to address more than just the issue of guns. Looking at what we see from the outside, and I admit that this is probably influenced by what we see on film and TV, the whole culture in school life seems to be centred around establishing a pecking order. Are you one of the "cool kids" or are you one of the nerds. Children are naturally inclined to this type of thing because of their young minds but in the US education system, this seems to be actively encouraged. I may have totally the wrong idea of this because my info comes from film and TV and maybe some of our US based posters can give us a better picture, but all of these shooters seem to have one thing in common. They were loners, school society outcasts. They also had easy access to guns.

Re: Another day, another mass shooting in the States
Many questions being raised as to why the killer was allowed to slip through the net:
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/201 ... ated-aboutCruz himself appears to have presaged the attack. A comment left below a YouTube video by someone using the name Nikolas Cruz warned: “I’m going to be a professional school shooter.”
The comment was flagged to the FBI last September but law enforcement officials were unable to identify the poster and the agency says it still has not conclusively linked the account to Cruz.
Many other disturbing posts were made by someone under the same name. CNN reported that other comments he posted included “I whana [sic] shoot people with my AR-15 [the gun used in the killing spree]”, and “I wanna die Fighting killing **** ton [sic] of people”. An Instagram account associated with the same name included photos of firearms. “Nikolas Cruz” is also said to have insulted Muslims and black people online.

Slipped through the net?
At a guess there are many thousands like him who want/threaten to kill and post odd crap online but don't follow it through.
It's a fairly safe assumption that he was just over looked.

They failed to follow up a post by 'Nikolas Cruz' that he was going to be a school shooter because they were unable to identify him.
You'd have thought they could have started by looking for someone called Nikolas Cruz.

Missed the point again.
In a country with millions of guns and a massive amount of oddballs occasionally some will slip through the net.
If you don't get that point then this conversation ends here.

Nope.
I said that he's possibly slipped through the net because of the large number of guns and nutters out there.
You're the one picking the fight as per usual.
End of conversation, done chatting on this with you because it's pointless chatting to you about it.

For such a hugely intelligent individual your use of the word "literally" leaves me literally perplexed.
Re: Another day, another mass shooting in the States
Guns aren't to blame for mass shootings. It's video games:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/ ... ooting-nra" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The only thing you can say with any accuracy about some Americans is that the NRA are just as evil as Islamic State. They don't want to get rid of guns, they don't want people to be safe from mass killings, they've NEVER made any attempts to block the sale of guns to anyone who shouldn't have them.

Re: Another day, another mass shooting in the States
The actual core of the problem is The Constitution. It was written over 240 years ago and was written when guns could barely shoot across a room. The `right to bare arms` was purely for self defense. The Fore Fathers certainly could never have envisaged AK 47`s and the like. Anybody who lives in America will know how much today`s Americans rely on The Constitution ( when it suits them). It will never happen but America needs to move into the 21st Century with a Constitution that works in today`s ever changing world. For the record I vote Republican but am anti `right to bare arms`The reason guns are freely available in America is purely commercial and funded by the NRA. In America it is called lobbying. In other countries it is called bribing.

Sadly, they are wasting their time as the NRA would rather have the right to bare arms than save lives:

very stark example of the nature of the nra sidney.
i would indeed classify this group as terrorists.
i'm sure daesh would love that kind of political power.
but don't kid yourself that things will change any time soon in america. it won't.

Perhaps one day, at the NRA annual conference, someone walks in shouting "God is Great", fully armed.
The irony!

Americans didn't just take over their country from the indigenous people, they conquered it. We in Canada took a different approach. We never had an Indian war, because we always made sure that there was a valid treaty. So what if they only got a handful of beads and trinkets in return. They should have hired a lawyer.

Re: Another day, another mass shooting in the States
John Ford was a great American film director. He made his name by directing numerous westerns, like Stagecoach. If there had never been any American Indian Wars, he never would had a career, and the gun-toting segment of the population never would have had a hero (or John Wayne, for that matter).

AK 47s hadn't been invented yet when guns were enshrined in the Constitution. It was still single-shot muskets.

They do. There are 23 of them, I believe. Prohibition was an amendment to the Constitution. It took another amendment to undo it. Americans, at the time, would rather have people get shot than have them partake in an alcoholic drink.

Been watching the survivors with Trump, was going well until the plant started talking about armed guards in schools. No more guns, the solution is not more guns. Try more controls on the buying of guns and no more assault weapons. None not one outside the military.

They try to spin it as a mental health issue. But no civilized country comes close to the number of school shootings that the States have. But didn't the first occur in merry old England? "I Don't Like Mondays" by the Boomtown Rats.

No, that song was written about a shooting at Grover Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego on 29 January 1979 that left 2 adults dead and 8 school children injured. When they asked the girl why she'd done it not liking Mondays was her response.ontario claret wrote:But didn't the first occur in merry old England? "I Don't Like Mondays" by the Boomtown Rats.

Re: Another day, another mass shooting in the States
The current law regarding possession of firearms is actually the 2nd Amendment to the U. S. Constitution. So, it wasn't part of the original document. I've never actually read the document, and I'm not a lawyer, but I'm sure that it is something that makes firearms more available to the average citizen. I actually think that the original passage only applied to the raising of militias.

They had a standing army (they beat you lot) AND a militia before and during the Revolutionary War. The bunch that beat you at Lexington and Concord were all militiamen.

The Us should do what every other country without tens of thousands of gun deaths each year and ban violent video games. That the exact reason we in the UK don't go around shooting people over an Xbox controller, we just don't know to do it.
