Driving Query
Unless I'm dreaming the roundabout near The Range has had the lane markings redone on it as part of the recent maintenance work and my question is as follows. When you come from ASDA past Burnley College and under the arches to approach the roundabout, there's the right lane and the left lane. As they're currently marked in order to cross the roundabout to go up towards Kwik Fit you should be in the left hand lane? However, I've noticed 90% of people getting in the right hand lane (as they probably have always historically done), which as I understand it now takes you back around the roundabout and towards the M65 eastbound. I'm only asking because I've had people almost cutting me up all week. Am I right or have I been driving terribly?

Re: Driving Query
How are the lanes marked. If left lane has left and straight ahead arrows you should be in left lane. If left arrow only you should be in right hand lane for ahead and right tur. May be wrong....not seen the markings.

Re: Driving Query
It's marked straight ahead and left and has A679 written on it which I believe is the road for going towards Kwik Fit. I'm convinced I'm right but I'm only asking because so many people (literally 90%) seem to be in the right hand lane and drifting across causing me to get nervous about being cut up.

Re: Driving Query
Then you are correct. But how is the other lane marked? Could be that you can go ahead in both lanes. Not likely though I wouldn’t have thought. Driving standards have gone down the pan over the last 10 years imho.

Re: Driving Query
It's marked right. I think possibly the lane markings on it had been faded for years and people had just always been in the right lane and drifted across, now it's been marked properly we're seeing a case of old habits die hard. I'm just glad I'm not going crazy

So the right lane is marked as a right turn only?
So the only direction you can go is around the roundabout and back in the direction you came from?

Re: Driving Query
The whole b****y things a cock up. There's a worse situation when you come down Active Way in the correct -(outside) -lane to go around the roundabout for the M65. The road marking on approach is M65 and nothing else. About 15/20yards onto the roundabout, you're suddenly confronted with markings splitting the lane in two, with M65 to the left and A679 to the right and only about 20 yards or so to get across before it' too late.

I noticed this as well when I was coming from that direction, although I travel that way less so it's only been once or twice. Surely somebody tests these things out prior to implementation?Gerry Hattrick wrote:The whole b****y things a cock up. Re: Driving Query
Its a spiral roundabout but the markings are confusing. If you are coming from the college and continuing towards kwik fit you should be in the left hand lane.
I think the confusion is that the A679 is marked on both lanes, but the right hand lane is if you are going round the roundabout and up the A679 past Aldi which is plain odd, considering you’d just turn left at the roundabout if that was your intention.

if going from nelson towards the college you have to cross lanes to get into right position. Ok when you have got used to it but then the road narrows to one lane outside colleg. Awful layout and there will be accidents galore.
Re: Driving Query
My suggestion to people struggling is to read up on spiral roundabouts. There is no need to cut across lanes at all, but it’s a fact that very few people know how to use them correctly

1 Position your vehicle in the right lane, unless arrows on the road or signs indicate otherwise.
2 Use your right indicator as you approach and enter the roundabout.
3 Give way to all vehicles already on the roundabout.
4 Before exiting, use your left indicator and follow the exit lane marking.
5 Stop indicating once you have exited the roundabout.
Never turn right from the left lane unless arrows on the road indicate that you can.

Re: Driving Query
I’ll reserve judgement until I drive down there next, but that really doesn’t make any sense. I suspect there’s a misunderstanding because the A679 IS the left turn up to Sainsbury’s and also the right turn towards Kwik Fit. Straight on is into town - I honestly can’t see it being anything different, and if it is as you say, someone’s done a booboo...dushanbe wrote:Not since the rouandabout changed. Re: Driving Query
It’s no mistake, it’s a spiral roundabout, albeit a mini one. They’ve sprung up around the place and this thread shows that people don’t know how to drive around them.

I can't remember because I never really took notice in the past but on entering the roundabout from the ASDA direction did there used to be three lanes?Rick_Muller wrote:I’ll reserve judgement until I drive down there next, but that really doesn’t make any sense. Left - Towards Sainsbury's
Ahead - Straight on to the Town Mouse
Right - Up to Kwik Fit
Now there are just two. One is marked left/ahead (A679) and the other right (M65). A679 is marked on the left lane once you've got past the Sainsbury's turning so it must mean it's for going up to Kwik Fit. I understand where the confusion is coming from and there should maybe have been some pre-warning by whoever has done it as people are cutting across from the right lane.

Like I said above, I’ll reserve judgement until I next drive across it and I’ll be sure to update this post when I do (and I’ll happily eat humble pie too if necessary). Forgive me for sounding like a know-it-all but I grew up and learnt to drive in Swindon and I live near Milton Keynes now, so my knowledge and experience of driving roundabouts is pretty good - and even if they have created a Spiral Rouandabout there, I can still see no other way that the left lane is intended to go all the way around to the right towards Kwik Fit.dushanbe wrote:Used to be the case until they changed it to a spiral ******* roundabout

Yes got to agree wtf is going on? I've approached from nelson centre twice..first time for barrowford second time for east bound motorway. Re: Driving Query
Yeah confused the carp out of me today as well. Made a mental note to pay a bit more attention to it the next time I'm passing that way.
From today's observations though coming from Asda and heading past quick fit.
I took the right hand lane approaching the roundabout, once on the roundabout before the turning for the town mouse the right hand lane is marked m65 (didn't notice what the left lane was marked) but the actual lane line markings for the left lane go down to the town mouse and the right hand lane lines then put you on the left hand lane on the roundabout to turn down past quick fit.
So I didn't actually cut across any lanes by using the right hand approach to the roundabout to go past quick fit??

Have you used it since it was remarked? The left lane is marked with a left and ahead arrow and A679 written on it. The right lane is marked with the right arrow and M65, if you take the right lane it forces you to cross over into the left lane if you want to go to Kwik Fit.

Re: Driving Query
But if you look at the lines for the lanes the left hand lane goes down past the town mouse and the right hand lane lines take you down past quick fit so you only need to cross over from the right hand lane further to the right if for some strange reason you want to go back from where you came. Yep I'm confused because even following the lane lines it feels like your cutting over a sort of unnatural angleSammyBoy wrote:Have you used it since it was remarked? Re: Driving Query
Clearly there's confusion and I'm willing to be proven wrong as my only concern is being on the correct side of a potential insurance claim. However, I've tried both the left and right (when it was quiet) and I can't see how it can be the right as it forces you to cross into a totally different lane at the last minute, which sort of defeats the point of a roundabout. Also, if you weren't familiar with the area and you wanted to go towards Kwik Fit, how does a lane marked with a right arrow and M65 give you any clue that's the right one? It similarly doesn't explain why A679, which is the road for Kwik Fit is also written on the left hand lane, so I can't see how it's anything other than the left one...

Re: Driving Query
Right, towards M65, meaning heading to Gannow. Not back where you came from.
It can feel like you are crossing other lanes, but this isn't the case. It is how these roundabouts work. You move over a lane as you pass every exit.
It is 'left lane for left and straight ahead'. 'right lane for right'.

Re: Driving Query
Is it not more filtering into the left lane whilst on the roundabout to exit?
Once you reach that point of the roundabout there shouldn't be anything in your left lane, leaving it clear to safely manoeuvre over,
It is a little confusing I suppose, some of our roads around there are prime for accidents.
The new light sequence at Sainsbury's is catching a few out too, it used to just be a four way system with each way taking turns, now it's changed I've nearly been hit twice in the past week by people going on a red light by mistake.

Re: Driving Query
I think that’s the point, if you are going towards Kwik Fit from Asda you need to be in the right hand lane, not the left. In the right hand lane, you have the right of way to exit to the left ahead of any traffic that may be incorrectly in the left hand lane ( as long as you indicate to do that). Remember that on roundabouts you always have to give way to the right - apply that simple principle and you’ll be fine.SammyBoy wrote:Clearly there's confusion and I'm willing to be proven wrong as my only concern is being on the correct side of a potential insurance claim.
