Nixon - Newcastle Sniffing around Pope
Just seen on twitter Nixon saying Newcastle ready to pounce for Pope if he loses his place once Heaton returns

Just read the very same tweet.
Re: Nixon - Newcastle Sniffing around Pope
If he loses his place to Tom Heaton he is too good a keeper to just sit on the bench

Re: Nixon - Newcastle Sniffing around Pope
This is the danger. With their ages, i think the hard choice, but smart move is to maybe loan Pope out for a fee next season to another PL club, let Heaton prove his fitness with a Dubravka or similar as number 2, then once Heaton proves his fitness, get a good fee for him and Pope is then the established No1mkmel wrote:If he loses his place to Tom Heaton he is too good a keeper to just sit on the bench

This is almost like when Leicester had to let Banks leave and kept Shilton
Re: Nixon - Newcastle Sniffing around Pope
We don't even know if Heaton will get back to his best after his injury. You really can't fault Pope's performances so SD will have a dilemna soon.

Will Pope want to play championship football next season?

Its a tough one. Rather keep Pope given his age over Tom. But Tom has 2/3/4 years left in him. In that time surely if pope continues bigger clubs would come in. Then were without both.
Anyway glad its not my choice

Why would Nick want Championship football?

Re: Nixon - Newcastle Sniffing around Pope
Tom's a lot better keeper than Pope, but given Nicks age and that good Goalkeepers get better as they get older, he has time on his side to reverse that.
We would be mad to let either of them go, and I think Nick would realise that although he might return to the bench, the opportunity to be involved , and learn, at the top end is with us.

Once of a day you'd be excommunicated and strung up by your nuts courtesy of the Spanish Inquisition for such a statement of intent.

Re: Nixon - Newcastle Sniffing around Pope
On the contrary I think that Pope will decide now is the time to be number 1 again. I hope I'm wrong but the lad has been patient, learning from better coaches and waiting his chance to shine. But after serving his time with us I feel he will want to make the next step on the ladder. He's stepped up and shown he can do the job at the higher level and has added Premier League to his Charlton first team experience - I fully expect he will soon (e.g. end of the season) decide he needs to move to carry on his advancement should Heaton return and get the nod over him again. I think he's earned that right should the decision have to be made, sorry as I will be to see him leave at least it will due to Heaton being back and dislodging him (it will also bring in a fee and an opening for the next prospect to come through and develop).Colburn_Claret wrote:Tom's a lot better keeper than Pope, but given Nicks age and that good Goalkeepers get better as they get older, he has time on his side to reverse that.

Really? I don't think there is much between them. Tom better distributor, Pope superior on crosses and bossing the area. Best 2 keepers since Stevenson and Peyton mid 70s.Colburn_Claret wrote:Tom's a lot better keeper than Pope,
But for me, it's Pope's shirt and on current form has to keep it. And i never thought i would find myself saying that.

Re: Nixon - Newcastle Sniffing around Pope
Pope’s distribution is horrendous but he is more likely than Heaton to come and catch balls. All being equal, and with both fit, I’d play Heaton.
There are some good goalkeepers sit on Premier League benches.

agree, it's the one area Pope needs to seriously improve on.ClaretTony wrote:Pope’s distribution is horrendous but he is more likely than Heaton to come and catch balls. All being equal, and with both fit, I’d play Heaton.

Didn't he just sign a new contract ?

Re: Nixon - Newcastle Sniffing around Pope
I guess what we really need is a young promising keeper to jump onto the conveyor belt analogy I mentioned a while back.
Then if Pope was to leave for first team football, should Heaton claim his place back, we'd then have another Pope.
Like JohnMac posted though - it's certainly a good position to be in. We're gradually building our squad to have better second choices.

Re: Nixon - Newcastle Sniffing around Pope
Like Keane, whatever our circumstances, he will surely move on eventually. If Heaton recovers well he will more likely not want to move on and we'll get five plus years out of him.
Therefore, IF, Heaton gets back to his best, sell Pope for money for him and his potential which may or may not be realised.

So long as we bring in a solid second choice keeper.

Re: Nixon - Newcastle Sniffing around Pope
You need two quality keepers in the PL-just look at all the other teams. Suspect Tom will not break into the team until next season (unless Nick has a few howlers or gets injured). Nick is not guaranteed a first team place at Newcastle as they have two good keepers
The alternative is that Tom gets back to his old form, is not affected by his injury and we accept a big fee for Pope, however I think SD does not like losing good squad players

Re: Nixon - Newcastle Sniffing around Pope
The way popes playing why should he be dropped?
Heatons a fantastic keeper but shouldnt jus walk back.in

Re: Nixon - Newcastle Sniffing around Pope
I feel confident with Pope when the opposition have a corner, he's very good and taking the highball but agree his distribution requires some work. He's done very well though to be thrown in like he has.

Let's not forget, there was a lot of speculation about him being snapped up last year.
Re: Nixon - Newcastle Sniffing around Pope
Pure fantasy.
Newcastle have an option to purchase dubravsca for less than 4 million.
I know it was only one game, but based on the performance v man U, he's just what they have been missing. darlow is an accident every other game and not good on crosses. Sels was worse. Krul was passed it, woodman the potential future but not ready yet.
Fat mike won't pay for another keeper if he can get a good one for less than 4m.

I think SD would’ve more likely to rotate them but it is a good problem.

Newcastle can't afford Pope. I really can't see Ashley spending 10 million plus on a keeper or any player at the moment

Re: Nixon - Newcastle Sniffing around Pope
I genuinely believe if you take Pope out of our defensive framework, into a team that is more defensively fragile, his stats would decline and therefore reputation.
I think he knows this, every interview I have ever seen him do, the first things he says is he couldn't do it without the players in front of him. I believe him when he says it.
So much so, even if he loses his place to Heaton, he would still stick with us with the view to come back into the team to replace Heaton eventually. That is of course if Heaton does come back in.

Re: Nixon - Newcastle Sniffing around Pope
HEaton is the better keeper for me. BUT Pope has played more premier league games this month than Heaton had in total at his age! So no reason why Pope won't reach the standards Heaton has set.
Pope has been fantastic. No doubt. But Heaton is the best keeper I have ever seen for us. Good position to be in.

SD doesn't rotate unless he has to. Rotating both keepers is something I'm certain he won't do.Cirrus_Minor wrote:I think SD would’ve more likely to rotate them but it is a good problem.

Re: Nixon - Newcastle Sniffing around Pope
If Pope played for any other top ten side his distribution wouldn't be questioned.
That's because a defender would want the ball rolling to him.
I wonder how many of our outfield players could pick a player out 50 yards away?

Re: Nixon - Newcastle Sniffing around Pope
most of them would at least manage to keep the ball on the pitch though. Nothing against Pope and for me he is now our number 1, but his kicking is worse than Beresford in his second spell.Quickenthetempo wrote:If Pope played for any other top ten side his distribution wouldn't be questioned.

Maybe it's a tactic to lose possession like it seems with throw ins?Goobs wrote:most of them would at least manage to keep the ball on the pitch though. Nothing against Pope and for me he is now our number 1, but his kicking is worse than Beresford in his second spell.
Seriously, we continue to lose possession through lots of different ways but Pope's kicking seems to take the brunt of everyone's frustration.
I personally judge a keeper on his ability to prevent goals.
