To reach 41 points, Brighton, West Ham, Huddersfield, and Newcastle need 4 wins from their last 10 games. Southampton, Palace, Swansea and Stoke need 5 out of 10. West Brom need 7 out of 10, so I think we can forget them.

But at least 7 of those 8 clubs must win 4 or 5 games out of 10, (OK, they may get by with a draw each, but they have to win the rest. But if all those sides are going to win almost half of their games, bearing in mind that they're playing each other and they can't both win, it's going to have to be a very precise set of results.

I saw a tongue-in-cheek league table prediction last week, showing the predicted table with 37 games played. 8 teams were on 42 points, 6 were on 43. It's possible - but unlikely. There just aren't enough points to go round for any realistic chance that 40 points will go down.

I think we're in with a real chance of winning five on the trot. One game at a time, they're all winnable, we're going to hit 40 against Everton then soar through the 40's and make the running through treacle like 30's a distant memory. Wood's going to bang a few in, Lennon gets a brace, Hendrick too. It's all going to click back into place again and we'll finish 7th not too far behind Arsenal and a good few points off 8th and top of the 14 league by some distance. This kind of thinking is what I love about this league, positive potential.

Well I hope you've got yr maths right, DSR. Those teams are capable of winning 4 out of 10. The question is whether that is possible mathematically given the fixture list. it might actually be an impossibility, regarding who plays who and when, but I'm no statto, I'll trust you.
