How many points will we need for 7th?
With 9 games remaining we can certainly win another 4 at the very least and with 2-3 draws that would put us on 54-55 points.
That would mean Leicester having to win 6 out of their last 9 matches.

Last season, 47 points would have finished 7th, as Southampton ended up with 46 in 8th. But I don't think it will be that low this time.

Looking at the remaining games, 50+ points is realistic.
Still entirely possible that the top 6 could be the only sides with a positive GD too.

52 - 55 I think.
4 or 5 wins out of 9.
Tough ask.

The way things are going for them - and if they should lose tomorrow -we should be targeting the Arsenal.
Our last away game could be their manager's last, and could be a "six-pointer"

It will be hard to accumulate a stack of points. We are one of the few in this league who have nothing to play for. All our opponents now need the points more than us
Another 2/3 wins should secure seventh provided we don’t lose to Watford Leicester and Bournemouth

If one of the top six clubs win the FA Cup and we finish where we are today, that will see us into Europe. That's well worth playing for isn't it?nil_desperandum wrote:Did you just write that?

Need to beat Arsenal then, after they lose their match this weekend, we just need to match Arsenal plus one more win and we've cracked it.

Re: How many points will we need for 7th?
Our next three games are away(West Ham,West Brom and Watford) certainly possible to collect points from those fixtures then If we beat Leicester at the turf the gap could be 6-7 points to the chasing pack, obviously depends how they fare in their games today's victory makes it likely we'll finish in the top ten minimum.Anything else is a bonus.
Re: How many points will we need for 7th?
6 is a bonus, as Arse has more points at present. 7th is satisfactory as we are already there, after a 'bad' run.
Re: How many points will we need for 7th?
I havent paid much attention to those above us as we havent been winning lately. But was astounded we havent won in so long but were (8) now (5) points behind Arsenal.nil_desperandum wrote:The way things are going for them - and if they should lose tomorrow -we should be targeting the Arsenal.

Re: How many points will we need for 7th?
I think the side in 7th will get 52 points.
We have an incredibly hard 4 games, before the crunch game. Let’s see if we are there or thereabouts after those. Obviously Leicester is a must win.
I still think Dyche will want to throw it, but this race would get me more excited than any in the last couple of years. Just the qualifying round would be fun to say we have seen us in Europe, get through the play off game too and it is likely to have at least one whopper in the group stages, somebody like Leipzig, Sevilla, Lyon, Inter (knowing our luck though it’d be Moscow).
Southampton and West Ham both finished mid table last year after being in it, so it isn’t always the kiss of death.

Re: How many points will we need for 7th?
Agree with Crosspoolclaret that 52 points will suffice for 7th
but far from certain we will benefit much from being in the Europa League
if we do manage to finish 7th and qualify.
It could mean an extra 6 or more games in a competition that we'd probably struggle to do well in.
Not sure either whether the fans would bother turning up in numbers to watch it.
More importantly is the extra TV revenue from prize money coming in.
I think it's £137m in total if you finish 7th.
Much prefer a decent FA Cup run.

I don’t have that much enthusiasm to qualify for Europa League.
It would be fun but it could cost us dear, I would not swap PL stability for a day in the sun.

I'd think we'll need either more points than the team who finish 8th or the same number of points with a better goal difference.

Re: How many points will we need for 7th?
Sorry Frank, but that’s not factual. Had another team finished with 47 points they would have taken 8th place from Southampton, not 7th from Everton, who had 61 points - ergo 62 would have been needed for 7th (or 61 and a better goal difference)FactualFrank wrote:Last season, 47 points would have finished 7th, as Southampton ended up with 46 in 8th. There is an argument to support that, (with which I have some sympathy tbh), but you said that the players would have nothing to play for, and I think we can be certain that Dyche and the players won't see it that way.Down_Rover wrote:Yes I did

If my memory serves me right, we finished 7th in the 58/59 season and the following season we went on to win the first division as champions. Will history repeat itself?

No reason why we can’t finish 7th I actually believe that we are the 7th best team in this league now our players are coming back. Nothing to fear outside the top sixSpijed wrote:With 9 games remaining we can certainly win another 4 at the very least and with 2-3 draws that would put us on 54-55 points.

Coincidentally the year before we won the title in 72-73 we finished 7thVino blanco wrote:If my memory serves me right, we finished 7th in the 58/59 season and the following season we went on to win the first division as champions. Will history repeat itself?
The year before we won the title in 91-92 we were 6th
When we went up at Wembley in 93-94 we were 6th.
I'll take either.

Re: How many points will we need for 7th?
In the end it should be about glory and winning things, I know that staying in the PL is most important, but I believe that our squad will be even stronger next season and it has held up very well this season with our injury problems. Why not add a little European adventure, we haven't had that for 50 years.Down_Rover wrote:Yes I did

Re: How many points will we need for 7th?
our squad isn't big enough as it is, the last thing we need is a European campaign. It's been the undoing of Swansea, they were really good until they got into Europe, since that season they have struggled. I genuinely don't see the excitement of playing some team from Lithuania in a pre qualifying game in July - really screws the pre season too

The club may also value PL security above all else
A Europa League campaign will require a bigger squad than we currently have

Sean D "How do you want to play this?".
Mike G "Just keep playing Hendrick as a number 10 and that should ensure the season ends in a bit of an anti-climax!".

Re: How many points will we need for 7th?
I think if you were to ask any footballer if they fancied playing in Europe they'd say yes. So for this point it would be beneficial in our ability to attract better quality players in the summer.
Over the last 10 seasons it's varied from between 53 to 64 points (mean - 59.2) so 60 points.
I think it could well be the lowest points total needed over the last ten years.
So in answer to the question 52 points.

Under normal circumstances, you'd expect Arsenal to win more than enough of those to finish 6th - esp as they have a 5 point start on us, but the way things are at present you can see them slipping up in quite few of those - indeed they might lose all the away games.LoveCurryPies wrote: ARSENAL - remaining games:

One thing: we would have to beat them at the Emirates to have any chance of catching them, and this will almost certainly be Wenger's last home game as manager. If we are in touching distance of them at that point it could be quite an occasion.

Comparing run-in fixtures with Arsenal for a European place rather than with potential relegation rivals for a big-drop place --- good times, love it
