Apparently West Ham have no control over the Stewards in their rented ground - that is the responsibility of Newham borough Council - they obviously have no real experience of football or these types of ugly scenes. Also do not want to pay for police in the ground

As utterly ridiculous as that sounds - I'm not surprised.

I remember being there last season and there was a group of cockneys giving it what for and a load of foul mouthed abuse next to the Burnley fans, I nothiced the steward who was stood right next to them just smiling and totally ignoring them, what a joke of a club. UTC!

If you knew A) how much steward's earned and B) their travel conditions to and from events, you'd realise why none of them care enough to put themselves in danger.

They are there to provide help to the fans, show them to seats, point them to amenities, not get involved in physical challenges.

Exactly. The policing is whats the shambles. Stoke next. That will be fun.

On my way to Stratford station I heard a group of stewards moaning to their superior about having to be put in the firing line and the supervisor told them that upon being hired they were told that they would be involved in the front line on some occasions and to get on with it if they wanted to be paid.

Agree entirely with this. They need to employ professional security or pay for more police to manage troublesome fans and idiots who want to run on the pitch.

West Ham players should collectively ‘invade’ one of London’s local police stations, at their place of work. Run around reception hurling abuse at staff... then count how many come from behind the desk to make arrests.

This should be changed immediately. The football club should have 100% responsibility for crowd safety and security including deciding the number of stewards and police required for a game - and, of course, at their own expense. They shouldn't get a "health and safety license (or whatever if required) without this requirement. This should be among the FA's (and Premier League and Football League) requirements - so that no club can do a "cheap deal" to pass off the cost of crowd security to someone else - as WHU appear to have done if Newham council have been picking up this cost.

Let's hope this issue comes out with the number of investigations that have been announced.

Obviously when Boris Johnson spent £323 million of taxpayers money converting the London Stadium, supposedly to make it "fit for purpose" to be used as a football stadium by West Ham, he did not envisage the problems of stewarding and policing the stadium. The stadium is already costing the taxpayer £20 million a year and these costs will only escalate if additional policing is now needed.

Unlike Boris to make a complete Horlicks of things.

Paul W - West Ham have argued for having the control of security since the negotiations for the Lease started - but have been repeatedly denied

My friend, who has been a Hammers fan for over 60 years and is a ST holder, told me earlier this year that there is inadequated stewarding at the ground and that, should something kick off, they would have difficulty in dealing with it because there was also no police presence inside the ground.
It would seem that West Ham ignored the possibility of problems yesterday because they assumed that, with Karen Brady having had discussions with one of the factions who cancelled their protest march, there would be no problems.

Hi Chester, that's interesting. Who was denying them this control? Is there any chance that they will change their minds after yesterday's events?

Of course, FA/Premier League could still have a rule that football club must be responsible for security in and around the ground.

And, of course, this is all subject to club following the advice of police. No one would want another Hillsborough because the club got their security control wrong.

I'm sure I read somewhere the police are kept outside the ground for financial reasons.

Toxic atmosphere, Toxic relationship between club owners and fans and apparently toxic relationship between club owners and landlords - not enough to get the stadium on the very cheap now want an extra £100m for not reading the small print in the contract

Sent a complaint to West Ham today about the stewarding we experienced. People in our seats had been told to sit there by stewards. We were advised to take other seats and did so. Second half came and another group had been ushered into 'our' eventual first half seats by a steward. We missed some of the game then eventually 4 of us were squeezed into a space with 2 seats in it which hacked off some nearby Burnley fans that decided to become instantly abusive. Rather than dealing with the initial problem they were actively exacerbating the situation. I'm well behind their stance of not taking on the pitch invading morons but the one job they have to do is ensure everyone can watch the game safely - in our experience they actually made the situation more volatile in the away end and it was entirely avoidable.
