The same Angus Gunn who conceded 4 today against relegation threatened Hull City (albeit two goals were pens)?
In a lower league team?

I think it to keep with the consistency of the same players, he's been involved we before due to injuries. Heaton was called up in the championship to be fair cause he'd been involved before.
It's crap for Pope but I think the logic is consistency. Hart hasn't played as much first team football, so it looks like its gonna be Butland, Pickford and Gunn

Lots of goals
But then he signed for Burnley, and grew a pair of balls
At crosses shots and corners, he takes them in his stride
AND WHEN IT COMES TO PENALTIES THE STRIKER IS DENIED

Re: Angus Gunn to be called up over Pope.
Pope has possibly been the best English goalkeeper this season. He's certainly in the top three. He deserves to be called up along with Butland and Pickford.
If Gunn is selected ahead of any of those three, it will send a very poor message.

Re: Angus Gunn to be called up over Pope.
I don't think it matters how many goals you concede in 1 game, well I hope the England manager doesn't pick his squad based on 1 game anyway. I know Southgate likes to work with the players he had in his U21 squad and that's probably why Gunn was called up last time over Pope.Juan Tanamera wrote:The same Angus Gunn who conceded 4 today against relegation threatened Hull City (albeit two goals were pens)?

Re: Angus Gunn to be called up over Pope.
Involved before or not, picking a kid at a Championship club over the in-form keeper in the top flight is frankly bizarre.
I assume the ultimate idea is to have three goalkeepers at the World Cup who can be relied on if needed. On that basis, surely it’s the guy who has had a great season at the highest domestic level you want to be getting used to the England set-up.

Re: Angus Gunn to be called up over Pope.
Tricky one to be honest. I think Gunn will be the better of the two as time goes on. Pope has been better than Butland and Pickford this season though. They are more likely the two he’s competing with. Gunn is one for the future. I’m more disappointed for Heaton. If he didn’t get injured, there’s every chance he’d be number 1.

There's not many players in football or cricket that play full international that haven't played age group international.

If Gunn gets a call it's because they don't want Scotland to have him. His dad was Scotland keeper.

Re: Angus Gunn to be called up over Pope.
Not boding well for Russia.
An inexperienced Championship Number 3 no doubt picked for experience to help him in 2022, and choices 1 and 2 have had goals whizzing past them all season, so confidence will be low.
Add to that the central defence, which is shambolic, Cahill will probably start due to a lack of others and he has a lack of match practice. Both positions will be worse than anything we have had in recent memory.
Let’s be honest, we are going to get taken apart as soon as we hit the knock out stages. Selecting someone like Pope or Tarks from left field, high on confidence, just might have done it, but Southgate isn’t an original thinker nor a risk taker. I’m losing interest in Russia already.

Re: Angus Gunn to be called up over Pope.
Surprising decision, but bearing in mind that Southgate has decided to use the U-21s as a stepping stone to the first team (which is how its supposed to work) not as daft as it looks.
Still think Pope should get a look in though

Re: Angus Gunn to be called up over Pope.
If Southgate has a particular doubt over Pope, it will be around his kicking, which probably isn't currently good enough for an international keeper. Mind You, that was also true of Fraser Forster.
Pope has come a long way very quickly. It may do him no harm if international honours don't come immediately.

Re: Angus Gunn to be called up over Pope.
Surely this can’t be true. If so, it’s ridiculous that Southgate would pick Gunn over Pope. Pope has shown himself to be an excellent keeper, playing at the very highest level, against some of the best strikers in the world. He’s also been consistent for several months. Gunn is totally untested at the highest level and it would border of negligence if Southgate picked him.

Re: Angus Gunn to be called up over Pope.
I think he will call Pope up. But I can see the logic in calling up Gunn as number 3. Chances of playing at the world cup are limited for number 3 keepers but still gives a young keeper of the future exposure to what goes on and experience of a tournament. Its not just the game itself they can learn from.
If he wants to call Gunn up though imo he should call Pope up along with Pickford. He knows Butland.

Pope deserves a call up. He is facing top players week in week out. His stats are good. Personally would call Tark Mee and Pope up.

Out of interest what makes you think that? Pope has been absolutely fantastic since unexpectedly coming into the side. With no experience whatsoever at this level, he has been one of the top keepers in the Prem this season. Still very young with the potential to get even better.
Pope is an outstanding keeper and likely to be a regular for England in the future.
