Pope
When Tom did his shoulder in,I feared the worst for our chances of staying in this league with a rookie keeper, how wrong I was to doubt Pope, surely he must be in the running for player of the year, did anyone else doubt Pope could do us a job?

Re: Pope
I won’t lie and say I never doubted. Of course I doubted he could have done so well, we had seen him play like 3-4 times. He has been exceptional and although I do think Heston is a better shot stopper I think Pope is comfortably better at claiming crosses then him.

Re: Pope
It was logical to wonder how well Nick Pope would perform. Would he be ready, "thrown in" to the game, with Tom injured? Would he suffer some nerves, first game in Prem? Or second game? Or would he loose confidence the first time Burnley were defeated? Nick Pope has done none of these things, he looks like he's been playing Premier League football for many years. He made to "mtach winning" saves, again, in the first half yesterday. Tom Heaton was our hero in many games last season. Nick Pope has carried this mantle in our second season.Steve1956 wrote:When Tom did his shoulder in,I feared the worst for our chances of staying in this league with a rookie keeper, how wrong I was to doubt Pope, surely he must be in the running for player of the year, did anyone else doubt Pope could do us a job?

Re: Pope
I didn’t doubt he would be a half decent keeper but he came on having to fill Tom’s big boots. The fact he’s done that, and those boots are now two sizes bigger, is testament to the fantastic coaching staff we have at the club and the natural ability of Nick. Tom may have to wait a while to get back on; I’m just hoping it’s not because of an injury to Nick that makes it happen.

Re: Pope
I was worried, for sure. How wrong I was!
Re: Pope
Thought his saves yesterday were top drawer. How many times have we seen goalies concede goals when the ball is played between their open legs even when it seems to defy the odds of scoring.
Pope seems to have learnt to keep his legs closed which enables him to make brilliant last ditch saves.
There must be something that can be trained here, I can see uses for this skill ( legs closed at short notice,) in other areas of life and locations. Perhaps something that just needs rehearsing.

Re: Pope
When I think back to when the Sean Dyche era was still young I worried a lot.
I was worried when Austin left. But didn't need to be.
I was even worried when Shacks left. Definitely didn't need to be.
I was worried when Trips left. Didn't need to be (although he is the one I would want back most!)
But then things started to change.
I wasn't worried anymore even when Keane left, Gray left, Heaton got injured. It wasn't ideal but I knew that Pope had been part of this successful team, even on the bench every week. And from the few behind the scenes things you see I was sure that that back 4 and beyond are all his mates as much as Heaton's and that it would be ok, they would fight for each other.
However, I couldn't say I expected him to be THIS good.

Re: Pope
I'd say he's in with a hell of a shout for our Player of the Year. I know he's a pro, I know he's got a decent defence in front of him but he's made no end of saves that have prevented us losing. If he hadn't had performed as brilliantly as he has, we'd not be seventh, that's for sure.
To come in, as he did, and hardly put a foot -or hand - wrong is pretty incredible. He could quite easily have made one or two serious errors early on and blown it.
But he didn't.
And now we've got two top, experienced Prem keepers.

Re: Pope
I was definitely concerned and feared an implosion to our season which had been going so well up until then.
However he's clearly grabbed the opportunity with both hands and has improved with each game, apart from some of his kicking
He deserves to finish the season as first choice and with his stats as good as they are he deserves a crack at an England squad place.
This summer will be interesting for Dyche though with our new goal keeping conundrum...

Re: Pope
Being honest, I was definitely concerned at the time, as were other supporters I talked to. Thankfully we had no need to be because Pope has been brilliant and has to be one of the front runners for player of the season.

Re: Pope
Big yes from me. When Tom went down I was concerned for that game initially because coming on as a sub goalkeeper must be the most difficult thing to do. But then we went to Liverpool in the following week knowing that Tom would be out for some time and I had real concerns as I'm sure many others had. He's certainly proved us all wrong.Steve1956 wrote:When Tom did his shoulder in,I feared the worst for our chances of staying in this league with a rookie keeper, how wrong I was to doubt Pope, surely he must be in the running for player of the year, did anyone else doubt Pope could do us a job?

Re: Pope
Any little doubts I held about Pope’s suitability evaporated about half an hour into the Palace game when he made a great save from a marauding Benteke. It had Goal written all over it, but Pope wasn’t reading the script.

Re: Pope
Anyone who didn't go "Oh s**t" when Tom was injured is lying.
Pope has exceeded even the wildest expectations if we are being honest, along with the rest of the team and squad if we are being honest.

Re: Pope
Been a revelation imo, reminds in style a bit of De Gea, though DG kicking is better. Pope makes remarkably few errors as well I can’t actually recall any full scale blunders ( which all keepers do sometimes ) this season . TH also very error free. He may get a place on the WC plane yet as 3rd choice which would be remarkable

The article says Pickford was "culpable" for two goals at Burnley then lower down the stats say he hasn't been at fault for a single goal this season. I've know idea what they've been watching.
