Re: Shelvey
Newcastle won't go down, but yes, I'd have him here.
Not sure he's best as a number 10 though. Best played as a ball playing central midfielder, like Gerrard was.

Not for me. Can't really see him being prepared to put Dyche levels of effort in.

I can see him putting the effort in, but not the discipline of playing for Sean thoughSquarepusher wrote:Not for me. Can't really see him being prepared to put Dyche levels of effort in.
Re: Shelvey
Newcastle's best player by a country mile. Although Kennedy isn't too bad.

Re: Shelvey
Never
I remember the first Claret he went through on loan at Blackpool. The prats never changed since.
He isn't hard, just nasty and petty. SD wouldn't tolerate him.

Re: Shelvey
Didn't MOTD highlight him the other week just totally switching off and been miles out of position when I think Bournemouth scored against them. He doesn't fit the Dyche system nor the Dyche test.

Re: Shelvey
I can think of £80k reasons why we wouldn't sign Shelvey.
That and I think Dyche would end up decking him..

Re: Shelvey
Dyche wouldn't deck any player, he would psychologically deck them though.

Re: Shelvey
Excellent on his day. England potential. But wouldn’t want him anywhere near our club
Re: Shelvey
Not sure he'd fit, similar to Defour and I'd rather have Stevie D as excellent as Shelvey is. From the relegated teams I'd have a couple though, Ollie Burke and Claudio Yacob from WBA. Mawson and Fer from Swansea. Sims, Stephens and Cedric from Soton.

Re: Shelvey
Lejeune being fit again and having a goalkeeper of premier league standard has turned them around. Kenedy looks inconsistent. Dummett has been a bit of a surprise too. Seems to have improved considerably- although that might be because of the change in those around him - rather the inverse of Keane at Everton.

Re: Shelvey
I would take a punt on him for sure.
Dyche could definitely sort him out and he’d be a fan favourite. We’re short a tough midfielder.

He's an idiot. Not my cup of tea.
And not a number 10 either.

Re: Shelvey
He's a very good player, but he'll be on too much money for us, and we already have Defour, Cork and Westwood in that position.
Re: Shelvey
Who would have thought Joey Barton would have the right mentality or temperament to play for SD?

Re: Shelvey
He’s a wrong un. Wouldn’t go anywhere near him. Different to Joey. He was a wrong un but he has some brains so was capable of turning it round with a bit of encouragement and an omelette or two. Don’t think the same can be said of Shelvey.
Plus, I never like a player who sets a goal up and then turns to celebrate with the crowd himself instead of running to join in the celebrations with the goal scorer and the rest of the team. He did that yesterday i noticed. Says to me that he’s not a team player and thinks the world revolves around him.

Re: Shelvey
Newcastle opinion seems to be that he can be best player on the pitch but more often he'll be no better than average and occasionally dire. Add his wages and that he's a head case into the equation and look elsewhere.

Re: Shelvey
I should also add to my earlier point that one of the reasons that liverpool shipped him out was because he kept on injuring players in training.

Re: Shelvey
Assuming none of us have ever met him, we really have no idea about his temperament, work ethic and mentality. If anyone can sort out a 'wrong un' then I trust SD could do it.
Re: Shelvey
Decent CM, not a no.10 (would struggle in our version of that no.10 role more than Hendrick). If we had him he'd be competing for a starting place with Defour and probably coming out 2nd best. If Newcastle did go down (looking less likely after the Southampton win) he'd be going to an Everton, Leicester, West Ham, for a £20M+ fee and a fat wage.
Lascelles and Ritchie could be more realistic targets but probably on the expensive side of what's realistic for us.

Re: Shelvey
I would like however like many here I do not think Newcastle will go down and if they did it would be a big asking price we would mostly likely not be willing to meet.
However we are safe and it is good we can start debating these kinds of subjects with certainty, given the last 2 seasons and what ahs gone so far we will be a much improved prospect for many players, particularly if we had the Europa Cup to play in. Going to be a long time players and transfers will be analyzed and argued over, which can only be a good thing in my opinion

Re: Shelvey
I think this comparison is getting a bit too much air time, every time we're linked with a character who has had some form of disciplinary/attitude problem. In itself, the fact that Dyche has taken one player with a dodgy disciplinary record and turned him around is no guarantee that it will happen again. Its a bit like entering a lottery on the basis you've won it once so it follows that you'll win it again.Spijed wrote:Who would have thought Joey Barton would have the right mentality or temperament to play for SD?
But more particularly, Barton was different. There were loads of reasons for Barton's issues down the years, but to boil it down, he'd never really caused a problem in a team he felt was professional and giving everything to the cause, so Dyche could be reasonably confident that Burnley's culture was one he could thrive in. Nothing in Shelvey's record suggests the same. He's just a bit of a fool who can't control his temper and who doesn't really care enough about the damage his suspensions do to his team.

Shelvey is like a less professional Kevin McDonald

Re: Shelvey
Ross Wallace did exactly that after he'd set up Danny Ings' winner at Ewood. No hard feelings from me.welsbyswife wrote:Plus, I never like a player who sets a goal up and then turns to celebrate with the crowd himself instead of running to join in the celebrations with the goal scorer and the rest of the team.
