The supporters of which five clubs have had the toughest last decade?
Coming home from West Ham yesterday, the crowd trouble got chewed over quite a lot. It prompted me to ask the question, 'which British clubs have had a more troubled last ten years or so?'
It could be to do with ownership, ground moves, financial issues etc...or possibly a combination of the aforementioned factors.
We agreed to put any rivalry bias aside and thus, Blackpool appeared very high on our list.
Discussing it, albeit beriefly, really did bring to light, just how bad some teams have had it orecently and consistently over the last ten years or more. At the same time it reaffirmed just how excellent our steady growth has been over the same time frame.

For unmitigated bellendery at the top, Dirty Leeds have to be one of em.
Although admittedly, they haven't plummeted down the leagues.

With respect, I think Stockport's fall was in the previous 2 decades, and Torquay -as you say - were always 4th tier strugglers. Their relegation to the Conference twice can't have been that unexpected.boatshed bill wrote:Torquay Utd, but they''re used to it!

Now, Rovers fans being 2 divisions below us and their club being 130 million in debt over a decade: that's impressive.

We discussed Portsmouth...they've dropped from Premier League European contenders, to the bottom division. They have though, won (or possibly bought) an F.A cup in that time, which would likely see them drop down the list.

If you look at it in purely footballing terms then Blackpool’s last decade is likely an improvement on the previous one.

I guess I'm looking at Torquay from the point that although they've never really achieved anything , they are now desperately close to going out of business.

Re: The supporters of which five clubs have had the toughest last decade?
They've had a fantastic decade haven't they? From the lower depths of non-league when they re-formed as a club in 2002: - promoted to the conference in 2008, back to the football league in 2011, and now playing 3rd tier football against their nemesis MK Franchise, and have now finally got permission for a new ground.jdrobbo wrote:Wimbledon?
Arguably the best record of any current league club - (except the clarets!)

10 years ago Charlton found themselves in the 2nd tier of English football after spending 7 consecutive years in the premier league.
Since then it's been a rough old time for them.

Portsmouth (bought the fa cup ?) Blackpool Coventry Wigan and Sheffield utd roughly a decade since we beat them they tumbled to third tier,we in turn have prospered in that time.jdrobbo wrote:We discussed Portsmouth...they've dropped from Premier League European contenders, to the bottom division. I think you have to look at teams that have steadily declined or severely under-performed over the last ten years to get your list. Portsmouth would be a good shout, although they've won a promotion in the time. Charlton and Blackburn should make the list, as their directions have been generally downwards. But if we factor in a longer time period, I'd say the fans that have experienced the most relentless unhappiness over the last twenty years would be those of Coventry City. Their decline puts ours from '76 to '86 in the shade, though ours was more dramatic.

Portsmouth and Wigan have lifted trophies during this decade,Sheffield United may well return to the top flight.tim_noone wrote:Portsmouth (bought the fa cup ?) Blackpool i'll give you they were unlucky to drop on the final day, and could easily have returned instantly via the play-offs.
Coventry yeah another club that sold their soul for a new ground.
I'll throw in Birmingham on paper should be an established top flight club but could be heading back to the third tier again.

Portsmouth have to be there. As do Blackpool, Coventry and Orient. Could make arguments for many others for 5th place. Hartlepools a sad one. Wrexham should be higher than they are.
Oldhams mut be the most boring. 20 years in league one. No promotion or relegation.

Re: The supporters of which five clubs have had the toughest last decade?
Darlo have had it tough.
Lose their ground. Play all their matches miles away, Bishop Aukland I think. Finally get a ground share back in Darlo and a team in a promotion place only to be told they can't be promoted through lack of seats. They easily have enough time to sort this but rules are rules and you have to have the seats there in March. Now that team has gone to doggy doo and they start again.

Luton Town? Or is that not as recent as my memory suggests?
They had a huge points deduction after being relegated and subsequently ended up in non-league for a spell.

Re: The supporters of which five clubs have had the toughest last decade?
There are a few with Blackburn, Portsmouth, Hull and the likes included, but four stand out for me ahead of all the others as below.
Blackpool
Charlton
Coventry
Leyton Orient
What their supporters have had to put up with in recent years is appalling. Leyton Orient have at least got rid of their owner and the Charlton sale is expected soon. Meanwhile the other two still fight on as their clubs go worse and worse.

Yeah but wot about the price of our Twixs
It's not all been easy for us this last 10 years
Oh and one year I needed a Burnley FC beach towel for my hols and they only had them in Black & Gold!
It's been tough at times
And we,ve lost to Blackbuuuuuurrrn Roveeers in this last decade, 2010 I think, 8 years ago.

Bleeding, why bring up such harsh memories? Recent results have made up a lot against that Horse Botherer legacy. (And was that inlaid gold in your beach towel?)

This is the one that scares me the most - a famous old club, with a very large historical local fan base, grow under the steady management of Curbishley, who has complete control and drives the rebuilding of ground and facilities - he decides he wants to test himself elsewhere and it goes to pot for them all

Can't really argue with Blackpool, Charlton, Coventry and Leyton Orient. At least in purely footballing terms Blackpool seem to have bottomed-out and are on their way back and none of the others are in imminent danger of dropping any further.
What's happened to the North-East's two former lower-league clubs is really sad and near neighbours York have dropped down the pyramid with them.
Could add Hereford to the list too.

Any club that has been "wound up" would be included. So, ya, that includes Hereford. Also, Aldershot. And Charlton came within 5 minutes of disappearing back in the 90s, pre-Curbishley.

Melchester Rovers . Don’t even know which league they’re playing in nowadays
