Stepping up to the PLATE
Stepping up to the PLATE
Having seen how well Nick Pope has done since our Tom got injured, You've got to give enormous credit to our back room staff,as it can't be a coincidence how so many players have stepped up to the plate during this season of injuries.
Nick Pope almost flawless
JBG ,massive influence since Brady injury
Kevin Long, came into our decimated back five, our longest serving claret
Charlie Taylor, was getting better each game, and unlucky to loose his place
Phil Bardsley, not everyone's cup of tea, masses of experience and did a job for us
Ashley Westwood, stepped in with the massive loss of D4, and been solid
Ashley Barnes, just seems to be getting better and better
What a squad our Sean seems to be putting together, every time I think about it I have to give my head a wobble to make sure I'm not dreaming

Re: Stepping up to the PLATE
Totally agree bigvince, every player who has come in for their injured teammate has done a terrific job, its such a well drilled squad of players and every one of them has done the job they were asked to do on the day, Dyche has worked miracles at Burnley and once we get back to full strength next season, we can do even better than this campaign, a team built not bought if ever there was one. utc
Re: Stepping up to the PLATE
A lot is made of our parsimonious defence, but however few goals we've scored, our percentage of goals to shots on target must also be very high. Not sure if anyone has the figures.

We seem to be above the "expected goals" ratio on MOTD quite a bit.AndrewJB wrote:A lot is made of our parsimonious defence, but however few goals we've scored, our percentage of goals to shots on target must also be very high. Not sure if anyone has the figures.

Our conversion rate is actually worse than average.
31.9% of our shots are on target (13th best in the league), and of those shots on target, 27.8% are goals (14th best in the league).
Leicester, Watford, City and United score 39% of their shots on target. Newcastle are weakest with 24% of their shots on target having been goals.
We’ve had 304 attempts at goal (15th), and have scored 27 (17th).

We've started scoring more now that Chris Wood is back in the team. Long may it continue Utc.

Re: Stepping up to the PLATE
I think what it proved was that with a few key personnel missing we can slot players in but we did suffer a bit and still did very well, in my opinion, with the amount of first team regulars missing. Just great to see now now we are closer to the team that were regulars at the start of the season, the results are returning, not that we did too badly with the run over Christmas all things considered and I know there will be people still not happy but I just think where we were 5 to 10 years ago, we have never been in a better position to compete at this level, long may it continue.

Totally agree with the OP about the guys coming in fitting in well and showing their qualities but it's no coincidence that the wins have come since the A team came back together.

We've got to game 30 and I've gone back to an earlier discussion about conversion rates/stats from the start of the season, don't mind do you?
Nothing to worry about despite your reasonable concerns at the start of the season, just have to put some faith into the team sometimes and not worry about stats early on.
I didn't bump it because some people get an arse on when I do that.

I didn't like Barnes at first (too many silly fouls). But his work rate is second to none, and he's become quite clinical in front of goal.

Re: Stepping up to the PLATE
Always a huge fan of Barnes, felt sorry for him when he didn’t start. It’s funny how some players can or have divided opinion (that wasn’t a dig by the way Ontario). I seem to recall a Brighton fan saying he has a knack of popping up and scoring important goals and look over the seasons he has been here, he certainly has, hope we can keep him.

I think you'll see Ashley signing a lucrative new contract very soon.

"Stepping up to the Plate" - Another American phrase, baseball related, infiltrating our language.
What's the next one "GUYS"?

Re: Stepping up to the PLATE
The irony is that stepping up to the plate is a routine thing that you do 4 or 5 times in a game. SUCCEEDING after you've stepped up to the plate is a whole different "ball game".

There's only one Americanism you should never, ever use. It's spelt T-R-U-M-P.

Charlie, baseball's the only game where if fail two-thirds of the time (batting .300), they put you in the Hall of Fame.

A .250 hitter is just an OK player.ontario claret wrote:Charlie, baseball's the only game where if fail two-thirds of the time (batting .300), they put you in the Hall of Fame.
A .300 hitter is a superstar. because he gets one more hit in 20 at bats. Fine margins as Dyche would say....

Re: Stepping up to the PLATE
I like the pitchers that come on for 1 pitch because the manager wants to go lefty-lefty because the percentages are better or whatever it is. Then he trots off for a well earned shower and to check his bank account.

Re: Stepping up to the PLATE
The percentage differences between lefty vs. lefty are much greater than righty vs. righty. That's because 90% of pitchers are right-handed, and left -handed batters grow up facing lefties fewer times. Also, the corealis force makes a left-handed pitcher's stuff break more sharply. That's why an average left handed pitcher is worth his weight in gold, and they generally have longer careers.
