Brian Jensen testimonial

Post by ClaretAndJew » Thu Mar 15, 2018 10:33 am

He's bleating on Twitter about wanting a testimonial again.

What actually happened? I've heard varying stories.

Should he have one? Would you go if he did?

Some seem to want to blame the club but the one thing a club cannot do under any circumstances is get involved with a player's testimonial. As far as I know, a committee was set up and it was their task to set up the game in the pre-season. The club offered them a date, which is exactly what they did for Michael Duff, his got sorted.

If he maintains this campaign for a testimonial for a full 10 years he should get a testimonial for that alone.

Five years at the end of this season. He had his testimonial year in his last season.

The time has gone now.

He was a poor keeper anyway. Built a career off one game at Chelsea.

He was great in that season, some standout performances including the home game against Reading. In the Prem though, he got found wanting.

Thank god we're lucky enough now to have 2 standout potentially-international Goalies to rely on.

Can someone just buy him an engraved watch and have done with it? Imagine bleating on about a leaving party five years after you'd left a job.

His quote on twitter:

"Still hoping for the testimonial it would mean the world to me to go up to Turf Moor and have a great day with the fans".

And can someone explain to me why he deserves a testimonial?

Ten years with the club entitled him to one, it would have been written in his contract. But he's had it.

Didn't realise players had them written into contracts. Why didn't he organise it when the club offered him a date? Can't be that hard, surely.

Wonder how much money a testimonial would generate for him?

A testimonial is arranged by friends of the player concerned as a way of enabling the supporters to give the player a send-off he deserves. Any proceeds are tax-free because the proceeds are deemed to be gifts.

If the employer gets involved, then the proceeds become taxable income as a reward of his employment. Which is why, as Tony says, that the club can't be held responsible - Brian needs to have words with his committee or himself.

Between him and his mrs they just came across as so grabby and crass, that i don't imagine many could be bothered with him if they didnt have to be now.

As others have said, the time has been and gone.

I find it very sad that some fans feel the need to critise him. Like any keeper they have off days but overall and thinking back to numerous games, Wembley,Chelsea, various cup games at the Turf (Arsenal) he did a great job for us. I would support him like I would any ex Burnley player in his quest for a Testimonial.

My mate told me he had a testimonial for Chorley years ago, like it's mentioned above its nothing to do with the club. He had his on an evening and the club charged him for use of the floodlights and he actually lost money!!

He's being criticised, because he had the chance to organise his testimonial, was offered a date and for whatever reason his committee didn't get it done. Lets say he did get his stuff together and organise another date, realistically how many people would come? He did ok for us, had his moments but to be still whittering about it five years down the line comes over as more than a bit sulky.

If he signed up all the legends and cult heroes from his time here, players such as:

Robbie Blake
Wade Elliott
Grezza
Branchy
Gnohere
Tony Grant
Mo Camara
Super Glen
Taylor
Duff
McGreal
Ade
Cahill
Gifton (!)
Djemba Djemba
Caldwell
Carlisle
Berisha (!)
Eagles

Then I'd go.

There could be big hold ups in play if there wasn't a packed house - the ballboys would have to clamber into the stands every time he made a pass.

I think it is a pity that 5 years on, he raises a topic which is time expired. It can only tarnish the many positive memories we have of his time at the club.

Leave it Brian and remain, in our heart's as Beeeeeeaaaassssst!

If he was to have one would be great to see the lineups be managed by Stan on one side, Cotterill at the other and replaced at half time by Coyle with Stan sticking the nut on Coyle!

He was involved in one of the most exciting seasons in a very long time. He was involved in many memorable nights. Weve been more successful since and I think thats taken the gloss off.

BJ was a butter-fingered buffoon who dropped more crosses than he caught.

Yes, he had some good games, but that's surely to do with the law of averages
more than owt else.

He certainly wasn't the worst keeper we've had.
Nowhere to being anyway close to the best either.

He could have had a Testimonial once.
For whatever reason he didn't get it sorted.

Quite frankly, it's a bit embarrassing now though the way he keeps resurrecting this.

And anyway, these games were originally set up to give a send off, and help set up, serving players in what isn't a long career, long before the money they get now.
Even when Brian was playing, they got paid a wage most of us will never see.

I still find it hard to believe the sheer number of far better keepers he managed to displace.

Doesn't deserve a testimonial for me on the basis that he repeatedly handed in transfer requests and threw his toys out of the pram.

He fact that he displaced so many keepers - and under several different managers - is cast iron evidence that he was a much better player than he’s often given credit for.

He played a big part in getting us promoted under Coyle and put in some memorable (and, admittedly, some very dodgy) performances once we got there. He did well for us, even if he wasn’t in the class of the two keepers we’ve got now.

As far as the testimonial is concerned, however, I think that ship’s sailed. Shame he seems so bitter about how it ended - I understand Laws sorted him with a decent final contract before he left.

He's criticised because over his time here he was a bang average keeper who chucked in a lot of performances worthy of criticism and because he put in multiple transfer requests and then spent the next 5 years bitching about not getting his loyalty based tax-free handout despite having every opportunity to organise it and despite having earned enough money over his career to set any vaguely sensible person up for life. If he didn't come across as such a nob about it maybe there'd be more sympathy.

He displaced Coyne because of Coyne's injuries, Kiraly because Coyle didn't want anything to do with him and Penny because he was nowhere near the level required. Finally we got Grant.

Whether he deserved a testimonial or not, he got one. It's been and gone.

I think it's pretty sad how much criticism he gets. He's certainly not the best keeper we've ever had but no way is he the worst either. He's part of a successful time in our club's history and I choose to remember him for that. However, I agree he should probably move on from all the testimonial talk. His time has gone.
