ARTICLE: First England calls for Pope and Tarky
Short article on site, didn't dare start it until the announcement, didn't want to tempt fate.
What brilliant news it is.

Great news for both of them. Ben Mee must wonder what he has to do. And Joe Hart? Really!

Wonderful for the pair of them!
Burnley providing England players again from a squad full of Internationals!
We've come such a long way from the dark 80s, and under our own steam.

I presume Southgate doesn't see a future for Jack Cork in the England team.

superb for the pair of them but to call up Joe Hart is a shambles. Still Southgate out for me

Another plus for Dyche, or the club, to use in contract/transfer negotiations for any English players we look at.

That's how Liverpool worked under Shankly. They brought a lot of players in from lower league clubs and stuck them in the reserves until it was time for them. I think it is fair to say it worked.UpTheBeehole wrote:"Come to Burnley, you'll sit on the bench for a year and then if we sell someone or the captain gets injured, you might get in"

I appreciate that value is added once a player is capped but has there been any evidence that a players worth is increased by a certain amount due to being called into a squad?

No real surprise. What is a surprise is the non inclusion of Ben Mee. Contrats to both Nick and Tarky.

What must Ben Mee be thinking? How is he not worth a pick? I can't think of a bad game that he's had in I don't know how long.

Brilliant news for Nick and James. Gotta feel for Ben Mee though who has been rock solid and should have had a shout too.

Southgate said he wasn't calling up Smalling because his passing wasn't good enough so it's fair enough that he's ignoring Mee.

Don't think I've ever seen Livermore have a good game for West Brom. How he keeps getting picked is beyond me.
Re: ARTICLE: First England calls for Pope and Tarky
The inclusion of Pope and Tarks is brilliant news and actually deserved. But there are some baffling choices on there. Hart, Welbeck, Livermore, Rose should be nowhere near.
Re: ARTICLE: First England calls for Pope and Tarky
Big congratulations to the Recruitment team and the coaching staff. I remember reading negative comments on line when both Tarks and Pope were brought in, I bet both players are over the moon at how their careers have developed with BFC. A day to be Proud in Proudsville of the two of them and all our clubs efforts. UTC

Congrats to both Tarka & Pope, but I can't understand why Mee & Cork were overlooked, and I'm sure Ashley Barnes wouldn't have said no, he is eligible for England as he has only played u20 for Austria and they don't seem to want to fast track him into their full squad.

Re: ARTICLE: First England calls for Pope and Tarky
Well done our boys, picking Pope for the squad was a no brainer given his outstanding goalkeeping stats and Tarks has been terrific so its no surprise they were included, what makes the mind boggle is Joe Harts inclusion, hes been dreadful this season, maybe its his captaincy skills that have been taken into consideration, its deffo not his current form, it would have been interesting if Tom would have got a few games under his belt before the selection, what a team we are.

Re: ARTICLE: First England calls for Pope and Tarky
Congratulations to Nick Pope and Congratulations to James Tarkowski. Both selections very well merited.
R4 at 7:30 this morning predicted there'd be two uncapped players in the squad, Nick and James. I guess there was a press release distributed on Wed - that was "embargoed" until the squad was announced - but allowed the journos to "predict...."
The Times (print edition) reported...."James Tarkowski primed to receive a first call-up, fitness permitting. The centre back has been nursing a groin problem and England's medical team will liaise with their Burnley counterparts."
The Times adds: "Southgate's defensive plans have been thrown into flux by injuries to Phil Jones and the loss of form of Gary Cahill and Michael Keane. Swansea's Alfie Mawson and Ben Mee, Tarkowski's Burnley team mate. are under consideration."
The Times on-line edition has been updated since the squad was announced. The headline is: Gary Cahill axed by Gareth Southgate as Burnley pair get first call-ups

Phew How young English players must want to come and play for Sean Dyches Burnley.
Pity Ben Mee has been overlooked again. Yes not as good on the ball as Tarkowski maybe that's the reason he hasn't had a call. Also the form of the Leicester and Swansea guys McGuire and News on.. His time might come though yet

Re: ARTICLE: First England calls for Pope and Tarky
back in 13-14 I went through our squad and listed how many had full or U21 caps and what a better side we had than folk were predicting.
This side is just packed with talent and caps. They are not on their heads yet but squad selection shows how close they are.
Well done lads and make us more proud.

Re: ARTICLE: First England calls for Pope and Tarky
Would echo everyone's comments. Brilliant for those two and brilliant for the club. Even 10 years ago, this situation would have been a 10000-1 shot. If I were young, talented and felt annoyed I'd missed out on a top club, I'd be banging the door down to get to Burnley. We are in an incredible position to push on. I hope we have the ambition to do so.
Just a word on Ben Mee - whatever the international coaches think, he will undoubtedly be viewed in the long term as one of the best and most influential players ever to pull on the claret and blue shirt. He should have no doubt how his contribution continues to be appreciated. Whoever plays behind or beside him is made to look a better player. Long may it continue (pun or not)

The Hart/Pope situation was discussed on 5Live earlier, the inference was that Nick could replace Hart if he settles in well. Sounds good to me.SalisburyClaret wrote:Brilliant news!

Congratulations to both of them - very much deserved. I do feel for Mee but understand the point re his passing.
I wonder if Keane regrets leaving Burnley? Yes, he'll be on more money now but things are not going well for him there. He'd still be in the England squad if he'd stayed with us.

As delighted as I am for these two, the shine has been taken off it by the inclusion of Joe Hart. I'm off to the bookies where I intend to stick a sly fiver on Ray Clemence to get a game before the world cup starts in earnest. If Hart can get in, there is hope for everyone.
I can't believe how many internationals we have at Burnley now. Great days indeed.

Re: ARTICLE: First England calls for Pope and Tarky
It does raise the question about 'youth'.
Is it worth messing with all these young players, virtually all of which disappear over time, or spot the youngish players who are first team regulars at a lesser club and already hardened to league football?

Great news for two of them and richly deserved. Great news for the Club too. As for the selection of Joe Hart he is getting a lot of 'stick' on here. I think that this might be a case of Southgate, as the new manager of the national team, showing he is prepared to be loyal to established players; and this does him credit ( and makes for team building too.)

Re: ARTICLE: First England calls for Pope and Tarky
I'm guessing Joe Hart is the in the squad because of the number of caps he's got. He will be the "experienced hand" in the changing room and the bench. I guess Southgate could plan to give each of his 4 keepers half a game, but more likely he focuses game time on just two of them - maybe to be decided having seen how the progress in training.ten bellies wrote:Great news for both of them. Great for Nick Pope to get his call up. Are we being realistic to expect him to get his first cap?
Ben Mee... are any of the CHs in the squad playing this w/end? Logic says that Ben is on standby in case one of the squad has to drop out....

Re: ARTICLE: First England calls for Pope and Tarky
I'm not surprised that Jack hasn't been called up as he did go through a drop in his early season form that seemed to coincide with the injury to Defour. His form has been slowly returning these past few weeks which has coincided with Westwood beginning to look the part in the middle of the field. Coincidences aside he does seem to need a ball playing partner in the middle of the park to get the best out of him IMHO.
Very pleased for Nick and Tarks and thoroughly deserved.

Re: ARTICLE: First England calls for Pope and Tarky
Totally agree. Hart and Livermore are odd choices. Livermore is really struggling and we already have Henderson and Dier in the squad. We don't need another defensive midfielder in there. He needs to cut back before the WC though and those two should be on that list.SalisburyClaret wrote:Brilliant news!

Re: ARTICLE: First England calls for Pope and Tarky
All this begs the question that I think has been asked before on here (apologies if not): when was the last time, if ever, a club had 2 England keepers on their books? I've had a very brief look online but can find no relevant answer. Something like this has to be the right question on Google and I'm at work so don't have the time to try it.
Anyone know?

Re: ARTICLE: First England calls for Pope and Tarky
Deserved call ups but I would also have called up Ben Mee to play alongside him. He compliments more of a ball player. Looks like England just want ball players. Don't think Cork has done enough since his last call up but definately Mee.
Re: ARTICLE: First England calls for Pope and Tarky
I guess I’ll be watching the next international’s then. Deserved call up for them and great for the club.
