Walnut problem
I'm feeling particularly thick this afternoon, feels a bit like early-onset alzheimer's.
Anyway, maybe there's an moderately intelligent person on here who can help me with this basic maths problem.
This morning I bought a 2kg bag of un-shelled walnuts for €11.
I wanted to determine the cost per kilo for the shelled nuts, so I weighed 10 of them un-shelled which came to 90g.
Once shelled I was left with 38g of nuts.
So how much for the naked walnuts? Embarrassing but just can't get my head round it.
Thanks in advance!

Still trying to work out how you have re-shelled the unshelled walnuts?

Re: Walnut problem
You have 444.22g of naked nuts at€11 so 1000g would cost €1000/444.22x 11 or €24.76 if my maths is correct

I could've used vague terminology. Maybe better to say the nuts had their shells on them when they were bought. After I shelled them they were un-shelled (or possibly de-shelled?). Is that clearer?piston broke wrote:Still trying to work out how you have re-shelled the unshelled walnuts?

Re: Walnut problem
Assuming that all the nuts were the same size, the cost of 1 kg of shelled nuts would be £13.42 as near as you can calculate.

Yeah it worked it out as the unshelled nuts being the same price as the shelled.chekhov wrote:Doesn't sound like enough. I think it should be more like €14 or €15.

That helps. So you bought them shelled. So was the 2kg before or after you stripped them?chekhov wrote:I could've used vague terminology. Re: Walnut problem
The shell is 58% of the weight.
So times that by 11 and you should have the answer £17.38

Is a "2kg bag of un-shelled walnuts for €11" the going rate?
Where do you live?
I've got a walnut tree that drops loads. I could make a killing.

Yeah, seems about the going rate at the local market. I'm in Ardèche in southern France but the walnuts generally come from the area around Grenoble.halfmanhalfbiscuit wrote:No problem, I hope it's right...ish

Re: Walnut problem
€13.09 per kilo is the right answer.
It takes 2.38 kilos of unshelled nuts to give 1 kilo of shelled nuts.
1 kilo of unshelled nuts is €5.50.
So 1 kilo of shelled nuts costs 5.50 x 2.38 = 13.09

Doesn't that assume that once shelled all the walnuts are good quality.Firthy wrote:€13.09 per kilo is the right answer.

There's nothing worse than getting busy with the nutcrackers, removing the shell and finding that the nut has "gone off."
I'm sure there are stats available about the frequency of "bad nuts" in every kilo of (unshelled) walnuts.

Re: Walnut problem
the maths is
90 divided by 38 = 0.422222222 then
0.422222222 timesed by £11 = £4.64.444p

Re: Walnut problem
I read the price as being in Sterling, however if it is in Euros the answer is 13.42 Euros per kilogram unshelled.
Each unshelled walnut is 9gms, therefore, you need 111 walnuts to make 1kg.
Each shellled walnut is 3.8gms. therefore, you need 263 without shells to make 1kg.
Having reviewed my calculation I am more in agreement with HMHB that it is nearer 13.09 per kilogram.
Anyway, it helped to pass the time and keep the brain active.

Been lucky so far. Only 1 bad nut in about 210g of shelled nuts. What's that, about 1 in every half kilo of unshelled walnuts or thereby?Paul Waine wrote:Doesn't that assume that once shelled all the walnuts are good quality.

Just thinking, a more fun title to this thread would've been something like, "I've got a problem with me nuts".
Could've had some fun with that. Oo..er missus.
