Life after Burnley FC

Post by charlyt » Wed Mar 21, 2018 11:36 pm

Cirrus_Minor raised a point on a previous topic about John Angus eventually becoming a milkman in Alnwick after injury forced retirement in 1972.

From that, I wondered what became of our players when their careers ended.

I know that Jimmy Robson went back to work as an electrician, Dereck Scott became a bobby, Brian Miller our manager, then a shopkeeper in Worsthorne and Adam Blacklaw a shopkeeper on Brunshaw Rd. Jimmy Adamson, football management for us and 'others,' and Jimmy Mcilroy did some writing for a local paper. Paul Fletcher, sucessfully went into stadium management and was our CEO from 2009 until 2011.

And of course Harry Potts was our manager when we became Division one champions in 1960.

Andy Lockhead a licensee, Billy (Ginger Pele) Ingham a bus conducdor, and John Connelly a chippy owner as was Arthur Bellamy in later life after his groundsman days ended.

More recently, a few went into football management such as Graham Alexander, Brian Flynn and Mike Phelan.

I think most of those i've named will not be well not remembered by many of posters, but it would be good to know of recent others....

Alan West became a preacher didn't he, although he managed Stevenage for a time in the 1980s I believe.
Gordon Harris went back to working at the pits, on the surface I think.
Didn't Dave Merrington become a preacher too, although he also worked in football management, first with Jimmy Adamson and later at Southampton.

Adam Blacklaw - newsagent, steward at Burnley CC and landlord of pub in Barlick, then worked at shopping centre in Nelson
John Angus - prison officer
Alex Elder - car sales in Staffordshire (I think)
Bobby Seith - chiropodist
Jimmy Adamson - stayed in football
Tommy Cummings - landlord at two pubs
Brian Miller - shop next door to Turf and then newsagent in Worsthorne
John Connelly - Connelly's Plaice in Brierfield (went past last week, the Plaice has gone but it is still called Connelly's)
Ray Pointer - stayed in football
Jimmy McIlroy - milkman & journalist
Jimmy Robson - electrician but also worked in football right through to 2004 when he left Burnley
Brian Pilkington - estate agent

The list above were all League title winners and yet went to other jobs
