That surely has to be a second branch of the excellent Boyce's Barrel in Newmarket Street in Colne ? If so the only drawback may be a 9pm closing time.

Bad tempered affair yesterday, Winsford probably just about deserved the win.

Just back from checking out Padiham's new pub (Boyce's Barrel) and as Dressingown states, it's absolutely brilliant for real ale (and cider) fans. If you want Carling or Fosters probably not for you tbh. Almost 60 and my first ever pint in Padiham despite it being on my doorstep, but we'll definitely be going back! PS.The dog, as seen in the picture, is a character too!

You might want to try the Hare n Hounds as well next time you visit, near the football club.Dark Cloud wrote:Just back from checking out Padiham's new pub (Boyce's Barrel) and as Dressingown states, it's absolutely brilliant for real ale (and cider) fans. Re: Padiham Yesterday
What is Padiham like these days?
Is it ‘on the up’..?
Any new housing going up?
House prices in general?
I know it is decent location for..
getting to Turf Moor
getting to Pendle
going west for Ribble Valley and beyond.
I have seen quite a few pubs there... are they good pubs..?
- any local opinions appreciated..

In fairness they're spending a lot of money on it. I've never been in previously, but I might be tempted to give it a try when it re opens, as long as there's real ale of course.cutsy123 wrote:Starkies needs more than a refurb

Did he catch the eye Tony? He could do ok for himself in non league if he could be bothered.

A big risk spending a lot of money doing it up and try to change the customer Base completely.

Re: Padiham Yesterday
I did a pub crawl with a friend on Mad Friday a couple of years back. It had been a long while since i had been out around Padiham so i gave it a go. I had recently moved to Padiham from near the Tim Bobbin so i felt obliged to have a look.
What i will say is that there is probably a pub for everyone. All very different with different clientele.
My observations and bear in mind it was Mad Friday and im not a real ale nut although i do like to try it now and again.
Hare and Hounds..a rowdy older crowd, good atmosphere
Kitty Kellys...probably the chaviest, most lairy pub I have ever been in. Underage drinking rife, drug use rife and the atmosphere was extremely edgy. Avoid at all costs. We avoided Starkies due to the fact that the punters seemed to be moving between the two.
Alma...a lovely little pub. Not too busy, older clientele..friendly.
Hand and Shuttle...empty..even on Mad Friday. It was hard to tell what it was like in general because there was no atmosphere at all. Nice chatty landlady so doubt it attracts lunatics.
Flying Dutchman...the best of the lot. Recently refurbished, modern and busy with a fun and friendly set of people in there. Once in there we didn't move so we missed out the Bridge.
I will certainly try out the new bar. I just hope it doesnt attract the crowd from over the road. With no Carling or Fosters... i doubt it.

Re: Padiham Yesterday
I've lived in Padiham for a good number of years only to witness a sad decline in the place.
Most local businesses went under with the opening of Tesco.
Those who didn't went under with the floods.
Many of the pubs disappeared with the increase in cheap home drinking and the smoking ban.
These went:
The Victoria
The White Horse
The Whalley Range
The Alma
The Railway
The Britannia
A working mens club near The Britannia (name ?)
The Black Bull
The Grove
A wine bar next to The Starkies car park. I think it was called 'The Wine Bar'. Full of nutters in a garage. It didn't sell wine.
Any help / corrections / additions are welcome
Now, new businesses are now springing up in the centre including art galleries, cafe's and specialist shops. Rumours have it that the former Barclays Bank buiding is set to become a Restaurant / Bistro.

And Barllck were under par to say the least. Maine road hadn't won for eight games and we hammered them at their place. My lads team were mascots for the day though so at least they enjoyed it.

The club next to the Brit was the Labour Club. It was destroyed by a "fire" years ago.
Re: Padiham Yesterday
Hare and Hounds and Gardeners good real ale pubs and friendly customers. Molly Rigby great club, I will try Boyce's barrel this weekend. Holdcrofts electrical is being converted to a Tapas bar, the hotel at the top of the town just behind the bus stop/shop bought out a few months ago by a Manchester company that specialise in up and coming areas has had a massive refurb as well.

Nice to hear that the area sounds like it's getting some investment.
Burnley and the surrounding area is a wonderful place and it's heart-breaking to see the disrepair some of the buildings have fallen into. There's so much potential with the wonderful countryside around.

It's a pity the increase in cheap home drinking and the smoking ban don't ever come up in conversation when people discuss why lots of pubs closed in Nelson.Dressinggown wrote:I've lived in Padiham for a good number of years only to witness a sad decline in the place.

Not for people who live in Padiham, it doesn't matter who you are or how old you are, everyone will find somewhere that fulfils their needs.cutsy123 wrote:Absolute waste of money pubs in padiham.
Me and the wife are members at Molly Rigby's and that suits us down to the ground but we might branch out this year and get a membership at the Top Club as well. We are retired so pubs aren't really our scene anymore but the one's in Padiham are absolutely no different to anything Burnley has to offer.
Re: Padiham Yesterday
Didn't you know that in Nelson the cause for the pub closures was the influx of asians, mostly of the Pakistani origin, they can take the blame.UpTheBeehole wrote:It's a pity the increase in cheap home drinking and the smoking ban don't ever come up in conversation when people discuss why lots of pubs closed in Nelson.
Them mostly, however takeaways didn't help either, and guess what, it's mainly Pakistani people who run them too!

Cricket club/football club and on to the hare is always a decent afternoon/evening. Gardeners isnt too bad either, kings has no nonsense owners again and starkies is having a massove refurb (although it will take some convincing to go back in there). That coupled with a few decent restaurants (cellar/fat giraffe/ mamma mias and sorranos) make it a decent town to live in in my opinion. I certainly prefer it to Burnley anyway.
