Strange article but when I saw he was born there it's not surprising he knew them as it's a small place. I can't believe that evil cow got two years and then lifelong anonymity. As I understand it the murderer has been attacked a few times in prison.

What a none story that is. Even by today's standards of utterly ridiculous none stories.

An abysmal standard of reporting. What's the excuse - public interest ? Unlikely.

It's a disgusting piece of journalism.

I assume their parents don't follow Up The Clarets but they might read The Mail Online - I'm sure they're delighted to have the whole thing dragged up again via a tenuous link to a footballer. To illustrate my point I was going to use a phrase that gets used in the article but I can't bring myself to write it!

I actually think the name of this thread is dreadful. If there is a link it was that possibly Nick went to school with Holly & Jessica. No need to bring Huntley in to the title of this thread.

Totally agree with everyone above about the standard of journalism.

Except for 1 thing.

They recognise Pope as an England goalkeeper.

So you don't think she should get lifelong anonymity?

What happens if somebody who looks just like her gets attacked by mistake, and possibly killed?

Then what?

I think this story was in the Mirror, all tabloid tosh that doesn’t serve any purpose, but all those kids went through a trauma, Nick included seemingly, and it seems like he has come out of it positively with grit and confidence, so I have even more admiration for him than I did before. A nerveless performer like him should go to Russia.

So you think if she has anonymity it will prevent someone who looks like her being attacked  surely it would be even harder to disprove it was her

She possibly needs anonymity from people who think like you but with a bit more violence in their hearts. Remember that paediatricians weren't safe from the NotW "lynch a paedophile" campaign; there are no doubt plenty of meatheads out there who believe that giving a false alibi to her boyfriend who she believed was innocent, is up there in enormity with killing the children.

Remember the children were already dead when she returned from visiting family. Her lies changed nothing.

But as she has a new life no one knows what she really looks like in 2018, whereas if images were plastered all over social media it wouldn't take long for attacks to take place. That's why she hasn't been attacked.

Also, should someone who's never met her be allowed to attack her and walk away from justice?

If we had mob rule on the streets we would be seeing the 2011 riots repeated on a,regular basis.

It must have been traumatic at the time and I am sure it has done him no favours preparing for possibly the greatest day of his football life.

I felt just the same when they published the story about Andy Murray and the Dunblane Massacre - but at least Murray has talked publicly about that.

Best to keep silent if it is clear it is something Nick doesn't want to talk about.

Though I have no idea why anyone would read the Daily Mail. I wouldn't even eat my chips out of it.

When I read this thread I wondered what could be so bad about a newspaper article that it warranted the replies. And then I read it.

What a desperate disgusting piece of journalism. If I was Pope I'd demand an apology.

The problem with this country (OK - one of the 20,445 problems) is that people have to go to the extremes to be noticed. We have Reality TV - people wanting to be noticed and doing anything and everything they can to be noticed. This is no different - they're doing everything and it doesn't matter who lives or dies, so long as they get the story.

I’d love it if he called them out on it at a press conference and showed them up for the click bait driven, poor excuses for journalists that they are. However, it’d be a silly move because he’d have them on his back for the rest of his career, revelling in any mistake that he might make.

Unfortunately he’s probably better doing what it seems he has always done in relation to this matter and maintaining a dignified silence.

Is it just me? I strongly regret the title of this thread.

I find it offensive to read Nick Pope's name in a subject title with a murderer's name.

What if it was your child who was at a school where horrible events happened? Nick was a youngster. Do we need to post this on a Burnley fans' website?

MODS: Can we delete this thread? I'm sure this is not the way to support Nick as he pursues his opportunity to break into the England team.

No need to delete the thread. Its an interesting bit of 'meaningless trivia', that if within the right context could be attributed to Popes bio if appropriate. but its a sentence at best.

Cheyenne Roundtree, a reporter for Daily Mail, not a sports reporter, mind, stumbled upon where Pope went to school and then worked out the dates using her maths skills to conclude he was a pupil there when the horrible crime happened.

She burst into the editors office with this latest bit pointless trivia to Paul Dacre, the editor of the Daily Mail who instantly stood up and knocked himself off in pure excitement. Just before the vinegar shake he asked if any brown, poor people or any "all grown up" 17 year old girls in bikinis were involved? She said there wasn't... then he went flacid and told her to just open with a headline and copy and paste from the archives.

Sources tell me that is exactly what happened.

I live in Cambridge. I believe Soham was hoping that the association of Nick Pope as "One of there own" would hopefully give the town something more positive to be associated with.
I believe local councillor may have contacted the Sun but obviously nice stories don't sell papers.

Local news in Cambridge this evening (Anglia news if you can get on catch up) had a good informed piece on Nick Pope tonight.
Mentioned only in passing his "links" with Soham, and that his brother plays for Soham Town. Thankfully no links to Huntley. In fact no links at all to the school.
Only School link was he was at Kings of Ely for secondary school.
Good if predictable piece, more to do with his character and keep trying attitude.
Shame not followed up with his debut! UTC
