Few clubs after Defour

Post by RVclaret » Wed Apr 04, 2018 10:30 am

Agent talk to get him a new deal? Or should we be worried?

Scandalous if we've still got that €8m clause in his contract.

Kristof knows what he is talking about, and I'd be amazed if we are not talking to him about a new deal.

Thing is, lots of other people will have noticed just how good he has been this year as well.

That is the reality for us sadly

It sounds like the option to extend is in the club's favour. Would imagine we're talking with him to extend further but in the event that that isn't possible then we'll probably activate the extension so we can either keep for another season before having to sell or get the best price possible.

Been excellent for us this year. But if we could attract defour when we were an unproven club at this level, think who we could attract now.

I think he will stay if we want him to. And i hope we do.

What sort of level of club would he be good for? Could only realistically see a Leicester or something like that taking him.

A European tour with Burnley would entice him to stay for at least another season.

Dyche has done a good job of helping to resurrect his career.

Yeah Leicester or Everton perhaps.

Although he did absolute dominate Matic and Pogba at the Turf this season.

Super signing Defour has been. My type of footballer. I half hoped you would get Defoe when he left us last summer, what a pair they might make.

I hope you manage to keep him, if not we had Yann M'Vila on loan a couple of seasons ago who is a similar type, excellent work rate and classy on the ball. Perhaps doesn't get as many goals as he should and carries a bit of a reputation as a bad influence but we had no problems at all, other than getting sent of on his debut for the reserves for headbutting...!

He's at Saint-Etienne now, having left Rubin Kazan. I wish we had signed him, but it would be nice to see him back in this country.

Not at all, just follow him on twitter.

He's been spot on with stories about the Belgian players in England though, as that is his job for the newspaper he writes for in Belgium

I only heard about him when he tweeted that we were going to sign Defour.

But I think he knew a day before it broke over here, so someone with knowledge like that is worth following.

Has he been a 'super signing'? In two seasons we have had half a season out of him where he's been effective. I'm not arguing about his ability, just how we've used it and his injuries.

He was outstanding in the first half of this season, certainly dismissing all the concerns any of us might have had after his first season. Was a big blow losing him to injury.

You will know better than me, but I thought he'd done very well for you. Scored some excellent goals and for what you paid you seem to have got good value.

Think he's only got 2 league goals to his name and one in the Cup to lower league opposition
No doubting his ability and two of the goals he scored one at Old Trafford and one against Hull on the Turf were special indeed
But like said we haven't got the full potential out of him to what should have been as he's a bit of a sick note.
He certainly gave Dyche something to think about after a full pre season in as we so something of a different player to what we had witnessed the half a season before but my gripe is his injuries.

He came to us with some long standing issues and became disillusioned about playing with lesser quality team mates.
Last summer he wanted to go but Dyche re-sold him the vision he had and promised to improve the quality of the squad which he duly did.

Defour got fitter than he has been for a long time and it showed before his current long term injury which has upset him because he was hopeful of making the Belgian WC squad and I think he was odds on to get in.
It was his foot originally that was causing the issue, but he is happy here with us, there was a comment from someone he knows confirming this last year.

Once he's fit again then he will be one of our key players again.

He looked a happy bunny this year and made a real effort on and off the pitch with his fitness. Hopefully that was not only because of his World Cup prospects before they were snatched away through injury.
Time will tell if he will do it again this year or if his agent gets his way for a big pay day ( remember the China stories last year?)
Whatever happens I like him as a player and hope he stays, as a fit Stephen Defour is real class. However Ash Westwood has proved to be an able deputy and if Defour returns without being Dyche fit he will be nothing more than an impact sub.We also now have the means and status to replace any one of the current squad - good as they are.

That in itself is a joy to be had has in recent seasons we have had to play players out of position and mend and make do.
Season after seasons we have been like that and now with quality like we have on the bench makes players aware that it's not a given and only bodes well making everyone graft for the shirt
This is a position we have not seen since the early 70s when our player development was second to none.

Fine player. In very good form before his injury. Would love him to stay put Ive a feeling his form/attitude was down to wanting to go to the World Cup.

Where this club is at the minute, I’m not worried of anyone going. We will be fine.

We done very well without him recently.

Not saying he’s expendable but I do believe we could get an adequate replacement in.

He's a great player, and I really hope we keep him. Even if we can't extend his stay it would be better to run his contract down as any replacement (of similar quality) will probably cost us twice what he did.

Half a season of Defour is better than a Defour free season. I’d be looking to offer him an extension on his contract.

OK so he’s been injured for a while this season, but much of last was more to do with getting used to, and fit enough for, the league.

He’s shown he’s a top quality player.

Westwood has snatched the opportunity. So much so we havent actually missed Defour other than perhaps his set piece ability.

Westwood - The English Defour :-)

We missed a Defour type on Saturday with a bit of vision through the middle. Not dismissing Westwood but he’s a way short of Defour’s level.

It's good to know we have a years option, so in reality we can have 2 more years of Defour, when he would be 32 and his value would be small anyway, in an ideal world he would sign a new 3 year contract now, but as his agent says his next contract would be his last.

It was Westwoods incisive pass that opened up WBA for the opening goal.

He regularly does this. Thankfully the opposition also seem to overlook this! :D

He's our Aaron Mooy/Jon Joe Shelvey, fabulous to watch him run a game.
