Are Southampton a danger?

Post by Spijed » Sun Apr 08, 2018 6:48 pm

Playing a Chelsea side in the semi's who are capable of throwing one in after today's home draw with West Ham.

Get past them and who knows once you reach the final.

Would be hard to take finishing 7th and it being worthless (aside from an extra £2 million).

It’s Chelsea’s biggest game of the season. They have nothing to play for in the league, they’re finishing fifth.

If Southampton beat Chelsea in the semis and Man Utd or Spurs in the final they'll have earned it! I'd be very surprised.

Of course, but it would still be disappointing with nothing to show for it.

Based on last season's prize money, finishing 7th over 16th should actually be worth at least an extra £15m, not £2m.

If Southampton win the cup they deserve it more than us. Simples.

You can back Saints to win the Cup at 12-1 (with Paddy Power; better odds may be available) if you are concerned. I am surprised that they have struggled in the PL given the quality and depth of their squad but I don't see them winning the Cup.

Would have preferred them to have Spurs or Manu in the semis, the way Chelsea are playing at the moment they'll think they have a chance. I've thought about having a tenner on them to win it, with my betting record it would be the ultimate kiss of death for them, problem solved!

Another hypothetical point. If Southampton won the FA Cup,I presume that they would still be allowed to play in the Europa league even if relegated, but if (unexpectedly) they did well, how would they manage to fit all the fixtures in with it being a 46 match league season?

Wigan and Birmingham have both managed it in recent years.

Is this going to be this year's Nervous Nerys thread?

Two years folk were panicking about Boro and Brighton and last year some were convinced we'd be in a relegation dogfight.

You're correct to the extent that they qualified for the competition, but both were eliminated in the initial group stage. If by some miracle a Championship team were to progress beyond this and then have potentially a further 8 matches before the final, it's hard to see how they would fit all the re-arranged league games in.
(Of course my point is purely hypothetical, but it's not totally impossible).
(Even if eliminated in the first round they played of the FA and League Cups, they would have 62 fixtures - )

Birmingham played 62 games the season they were in it. We played 63 in 08/09 didn't we? It's not impossible.

The nightmare of an Arsenal Europa League win keeping us out of Europe is one that has gone away this weekend really. There is still a chance that Arsenal will finish outside the top six, but given they are eleven points ahead of eighth place Leicester with six to play the only team that can realistically deny them sixth place is us and that will guarantee us a European place irrespective of the FA Cup results.

Not correct. If Arsenal finish 7th but win the Europa Cup they get a European place. If Southampton win the FA Cup, they get a European place. That only leaves 5 European places for the top 5 in the league; 6th place wouldn't get one.

Chelsea’s only chance to win something.

They’re usually excellent at Wembley.

I’d be shocked if Chelsea don’t walk it.

If we finish 7th but Arsenal win the Europa league and Southampton win the FA Cup we miss out.

Seems odd that we could finish a place higher but be no better off.

Based on this years prize money the difference between 7th and 16th should be around £32m
7th £137m - 16th £105m
The difference between 7th and 8th should be around £13m
7th £137m - 8th £124m
But because we’ve been on TV less that a team in our position would normally merit we’ll end up with a smaller split of the domestic and overseas fee for televised matches.

We’ll probably end up with £124.35m

So even if we finish 7th and the table stays at it is, well earn less than Leicester, Everton and Newcastle.

The cup is their only chance of silverware this season now, why would they throw it in? If anything I think they will fight harder.

Yes you’re right. Interesting that the league table they use on MOTD has a line under 4th and 6th indicating European places as they’re assuming City winning the EFL Cup means 6th is guaranteed a place.

So what the priority order for Europa Cup places then? I assume FA Cup winners have priority over EFL Cup winners, but where does 5th place sit in the pecking order? So if, for example, two teams outside the top seven had won the two cups and Arsenal win the Europa League but finish outside the top five, who misses out, EFL Cup winners or 5th place?

Shame that if Arsenal & Southampton both win cups this season then finishing 6th or 7th doesn't make any difference.

I can't get rid of this horrible nagging feeling that we're going to finish 7th and Southampton will go and win the FA cup. Certainly got a chance against Chelsea the way they're playing at the moment.

I'd imagine that an FA Cup semi final is the last thing Mark Hughes, but more especially anyone connected with Southampton football club, would want now. They've still a chance of survival in the Premier League, they get another chance like everyone else in the FA Cup next January.

In 2013/14 Hull City finished well down the table but played in the Europa League as losing F A Cup finalists. So will it be the case that Southampton don't have to win the F A Cup to qualify for the Europa League, they merely have to reach the final !

No the rules have changed so Southampton will have to win the cup to qualify for the Europa. They'll hopefully get beat in the semis don't think my nerves could take us finishing 7th and then having to wait for the result of the cup final!

Southampton have to play 7 matches between now and the end of the Premier League season. The FA Cup semi-final result doesn't affect that. Throwing the game would upset the players, who would rather show a Cup Winner's medal to their grandchildren than a photocopy of a league table with them in 17th place. It would upset the fans, most of whom would like to win a cup. And what would it gain? It would mean that the first team had to play 7 games in the next 35 days instead of 6. If that's significant in terms of fitness, then they're going down anyway.

I don't say Hughes won't play a weakened team, just that he'd be a fool if he did.

Sparky hasn't done much to inspire Southampton so far. Don't see them beating Chelski in a million years. They still have too much quality.
