Dare I saw it, had some quite nice games playing East Lancs, a decent ground. Well there has to be at least one decent ground in Blackburn.

Probably the best amateur Lancs league cricketer that I ever played against and watched over a number of years.Hopey wrote:Blez is a figment of everyones imagination
Hassy and East Lancs had some very good opening batsmen but they aren't worth speaking about.

I once scored for the juniors at Bacup, on a pleasant summer evening. Until about 8 pm when the sun hid itself behind the hill, and then (because I had come prepared) my non-scoring hand was wearing a glove! And my fellow scorer, a young lady from Bacup who should have known better, was wearing t-shirt and shorts and could hardly hold the pencil.criminalclaret wrote:Bacup is grim anytime of the year though - meteorologically and metaphorically

Anybody on here remember the details of the NEIL WHALLEY innings at Turf Moor. I was there and think it was against Rammy but could be wrong. All I know for sure is that it was the best innings by an amateur that I ever had the pleasure of watching, I seem to remember the Burnley pro taking all the strike from the other pro and Whalley plundering six after six from the amateur. Hope CT can give us the actual details

Re: Lancashire League starts this week - which is your club?
Not a lancs league man myself but watched a few games and the ones from memory were Viv Richards playing for Rishton at Rammy (twice, guess it was the cup) and Franklyn Stephenson was sub pro.
The other was a crazy game at Haslingden when Rishton (with Donald) bowled them out for around 100 and were about 80 for 2 in reply and lost. McNamara and the spinner took a raft of wickets for not so many.

Am not directly answering CT’s question but I played for Read in the late 70s/80s so they will always be my club. Some great old characters taught me a lot about life at an early age at Whalley Road -still see a few of them watching the Clarets.
Hard to believe the cricket season is almost upon us given the weather. Though I will be at Lord’s on Friday for Middlesex v Northants before travelling up/down to the Turf on Saturday ready to return to the ‘Home of Cricket’ on Sunday.

Lowerhouse for me!
Played there as a junior and was the scorer for 2 or 3 years for the first team. Was called Dexter by the players after a LCCC player with the same surname as me. 1991 to 1993 I think. We had Manoj and then Cameron Williamson x 2 back then. Manoj didn't play the whole year, so we had David Capel and even Ian Austin for one game!
Some local legends in that time I remember, Blez, Phil Astin, Jez Hope, James Capstick, Stan Heaton, Gary Moorhouse
I used to have to ring the results through to a certain Jimmy McIlroy after every home game and he'd often come down to the games and have a chat with us in the scorebox. Absolute legend and a true gent (you all know this already).

The difference with Blez is he couldn't really care less whether he gets the record or not, He just loves playing. Where as the others around him in the all time leading run scorers list carried on batting in top slots to enhance there own personal tally right up to retirement Blez has been going in as low as 10 in some games just so the younger players get an opportunity and he now rarely bats higher than 7 anyway.

Yes but at least the younger players are getting a chance. I can think of a few on the all time list who thought **** the youngsters I need to get that number up. Playing and Winning games with his mates as always been Blez motivation everyone at Lowerhouse knows that don't we Hopey. If he did get the record I don't think he'd even rank it as his greatest achievement or most memorable moment.Hopey wrote:It's a good job he comes in at 7-10 sometimes

Yep and don't forget he was still a poor left winger !!
Re: Lancashire League starts this week - which is your club?
As a schoolboy I supported Burnley in the days of Cec Pepper, Peter Stansfield, Bruce Pairaudeau, Jack Brunton and Co.
One of the highlights of the year was the annual Police v Professionals match, with the likes of Bill Alley whacking the ball out of the ground.
Later I went on to play for Nelson, although only ever with the second eleven along with Keith Darbyshire, Bill Oddie and Bill Harker, etc.
The pro's then were Des Hoare, Saed Ahmed, Johnny Wardle, and of course Neil Hawke and who's wife Elsa
owned the 'Eyecatcher' boutique in the Nelson Arndale.
Now, I can only keep in touch with the league via the Express and Telegraph.

I was there and remember it as if it were yesterday. It was Saturday 1 August 1970, the day Martin Dobson broke his leg in a pre season friendly at Middlesbrough.FCBurnley wrote:Anybody on here remember the details of the NEIL WHALLEY innings at Turf Moor. Neil Whalley scored 113 in 46 minutes. He scored 50 in 19 minutes, 100 in 39 minutes and his score included 13 sixes and 6 fours. He destroyed Rammy's quick bowler Terry Stewart that afternoon.

I managed a couple of games for the 3rd as a 12 or 13 year old kid, but then left Lancs when I was 14 and so after that I was a distant supporter.
Which of the tin lads are you, as we had quite a few, even though it was just a few years! I remember one I had to shout at all the time as he didn't watch the game and would ask what happened after every ball.

I also vaguely recall that your dad helped Reg Wardle with the junior training on Wednesdays for a time.

There was a lot of indoor cricket, and I think we used to try to send the tin boys up to the pop hut just to get some peace!
Officially he wasn't there to help Reg, but he couldn't help himself getting involved and was there whenever I was.
Though only there for a few years, have some great memories. Not sure how it ever happened, but I even helped out behind the bar a few times when there were private functions on. 'Heavy on the drips'
