The home leg was incredible too, the atmosphere was absolutely seething.

My mind might be playing tricks on me,it's that long ago,but did an Italian jump on Andy Lochead's head as he was face down in the penalty area,in the back of my mind I keep remembering this incident from a game I was at,or was it a dream, anyone ever recall anyone jumping on AL's head?

I was standing directly behind the Cricket Field End goal and had a great view of Panzanato stamping on Andy Lochhead's head. The Napoli players stayed at the Keirby and a bloke my dad worked with got all their autographs on a sheet of Keirby notepaper.evensteadiereddie wrote:The home leg was incredible too, the atmosphere was absolutely seething.

I was behind the Cricket Field End goal, too. One of the few games at Turf Moor where we have worn our 'away kit' that night. White shirt blue shorts and Claret stockings. Napoli played in their home kit of blue shirts, white shorts and blue stockings. Strangely both teams wore their home kits in the second leg. They had some very good players including Brazilian, Jose Altafini and Omar/Enrique? Sivori in their forward line. Think it was Altafini's penalty that Harry Thomson stopped in the 2nd leg that caused things to 'kick off'. Harry saved another penalty 4 days later at Blackpool and became a cult hero.

Re: Daily Mail on Burnley v Napoli...
It was the dumbest thing I've ever seen on a football field. Although we scored early it still felt like a match. Andy was down on all fours and the neanderthal rose like a ballet dancer and slammed down on his neck. Game over.Steve1956 wrote:My mind might be playing tricks on me,it's that long ago,but did an Italian jump on Andy Lochead's head as he was face down in the penalty area,in the back of my mind I keep remembering this incident from a game I was at,or was it a dream, anyone ever recall anyone jumping on AL's head?

Omar Sivori, an Argentinian by birth but "naturalised" Italian and played several times for the Azzurri. A very fiery character, ex-Juve where his "minder" was John Charles the Gentle Giant. Some years back there was a program on Italian TV on the lines of "Those were their days" and it featured John Charles. They got Sivori as one of the blasts from the past, without Charles knowing about it, and they had a very emotional reunion.Silkyskills1 wrote:........ including Brazilian, Jose Altafini and Omar/Enrique? Re: Daily Mail on Burnley v Napoli...
Amazing atmosphere at the Turf for the 3-0 win. Seem to recall we had the ball in the net as the full-time whistle blew and there was some discussion over whether we had 4 or not. First pic in the Mail article is Blacklaw being thrown down the steps of the below-ground changing rooms by Napoli subs and officials. Latcham with his head bandaged? Have lots of pix in old scrapbook from the 2 games, and the Special souvenir paper put out for the Eintracht home game. Headline over a pic of Harry saving the pen in the 2nd leg in Napoli was "Fantastico! It's the only word as Thompson leaps, twists, and dives to keep out frantic Napoli"

Re: Daily Mail on Burnley v Napoli...
I went to all the home games in the Fairs Cup season and remember the elation of beating Napoli 3-0 at home, then waiting for the Radio to tell us the away score. The away game at Frankfurt ended 1-1 and I thought we had a great chance of the Semis - not to be as they took a 2-0 lead at Turf Moor and despite getting a goal back we really needed 2 more because of away goals.
I went home on the Rawtenstall bus feeling very dejected as I really thought we would do it. Still, I thought, there will be another European season - I didn't expect to wait 51 years for it though.
I was only 12 last time, so away games were out of the question both financially and logistically. Next year if we qualify I'm going to them all.
Oh and the final is in Azerbaijan on May 29th, a day which has figured ij our past a couple of times.

Re: Daily Mail on Burnley v Napoli...
As per Keighley Claret I was 13 years old at the time.
We would have played in the ICFC several times but as we were only a town it was the first year the rules were relaxed to allow us entry. So the ICFC run created massive excitement and indelible memories.
Hopefully we can make it through and bring back those amazing days and create the memories for future generations.

Very interesting. Do you remember if there was much fuss made at the time that there were lower placed 'city' clubs qualifying for Europe ahead of us or was it never really an issue?ClaretLoup wrote:As per Keighley Claret I was 13 years old at the time.

Re: Daily Mail on Burnley v Napoli...
I was just coming up to my 15th birthday when the Eintracht Frankfurt game was played. To me they were a big name in European football as it was only 7 years earlier that they had featured in the European Cup Final v. Real Madrid at Hampden Park in front of over 130,000 supporters. They lost the game 7-3 but the interest from the Scottish public wasn't just for the magnificent Madrid team but the fact that Eintracht had beaten Glasgow Rangers in the semi final 12-4 over two legs. And by the way, Keighley Claret, I was also a disappointed lad going back home on the Rawtenstall bus that night.KeighleyClaret wrote:I went to all the home games in the Fairs Cup season and remember the elation of beating Napoli 3-0 at home, then waiting for the Radio to tell us the away score. Thats amazing. Would love a copy of it if possible. i.e. a scan of the original. May be able to knock something creative up from it. Let me know if you wouldnt mind... ThanksPrimeclaret wrote:Just received this in the last couple of weeks, an attic find by my uncle. Thinking about framing it.

The Napoli legend himself....not exactly sure you'd want to have tangled with him in his " Pomp " ....he looks one mean SOB...if he's still with us, he'll turn 80 on 3rd August...1963Claret wrote:I was standing directly behind the Cricket Field End goal and had a great view of Panzanato stamping on Andy Lochhead's head. Just checked and he is still alive and 'kicking'. Perhaps a re-union with Andy sometime in the near future?Clarets4me wrote:The Napoli legend himself....not exactly sure you'd want to have tangled with him in his " Pomp " ....he looks one mean SOB...if he's still with us, he'll turn 80 on 3rd August...
