Nick Pope
Bloody outstanding today......
Again and again, he performs. Agree with the MOM award that Earby Clarets gave him.

Re: Nick Pope
I'm glad Dyche has stuck with him. It would have been incredibly harsh to drop him for Tom. Plus it gives Tom more time to recover which is surely no bad thing.

Re: Nick Pope
A real calmness about him. Excellent all round game. Very assured at taking out crosses. Very confident in him.

Re: Nick Pope
Excellent game. Can't have done himself any harm with our favourite season ticket-holder, Mr Southgate at the match.
Re: Nick Pope
He came, he saved, he caught!
Magnifico.
Magnifico.
Re: Nick Pope
Tom will have a job getting back in if he keeps this up. One position we do not need to strenghthen. We couldn't improve it if we were Man City.
Re: Nick Pope
I know we scored 2, but his performance got us the 3 points IMO

Re: Nick Pope
I don't think Heaton can get back in the side. Pope is taller and younger, which are both advantages. and is better on crosses; and Tom (good though he is) doesn't in my view do anything significantly better than Pope does. It's rough to be the second best England goalkeeper and find that the best one is at the same club.
Re: Nick Pope
There's one view of that save from Mahrez (think it was him), the goal line view it really was an incredible save. Wrists of vibranium has that guy.
Re: Nick Pope
I've voted Nick Pope as player of the season. Not sure how that compares to MOTM votes each match but overall, to come in and replace an England keeper from the bench and from playing only lower league football takes real courage.

Re: Nick Pope
He's the best English goal keeper playing
It would be ridiculous not to pick him for Russia.
Week after week, he never lets us down. Southgate needs to grow a pair and do what his brain is telling him, but his courage is holding him back.

Re: Nick Pope
On current form. Best English keeper by some distance.
I don’t thing anyone in football could argue against this.
Probably the find of the season.
Not just for Burnley, but the Premier League.
He actually pulled off one, maybe two world class saves today.

Not only good enough to be on the plane to Russia, if Southgate has any 'cochones' he should be the outright nr 1.
No one better than him in England for the moment, great talent & full of confidence

Re: Nick Pope
Today was the day Southgate decided to take him I reckon. He snuffs out so much danger into the box simply from his confidence and height. An option as 3rd choice in case we come up against a team that plays with width and wingers

Re: Nick Pope
Excellent today and fully deserved MOTM. I was amazed when the Mahrez effort in the first half and Vardy’s in the second didn’t find the back of the net. Hes exuding confidence at the minute.
I hate to say it but I also thought he displayed today why he may not be on the plane to Russia. His distribution was wayward and I honestly think it contributed largely to the relentless pressure we were under in the second half. He gave our front men nothing to work with and a number of kicks ran straight through to that blonde lad in the Leicester goal.
I don’t want to be critical or nit-pick on an otherwise excellent performance but it’s an area of his game I really hope he can improve.

Clearly the best English goalkeeper around.
Yes his distribution maybe below par, but I don't think Dyche wants him playing the short passes like Guadiola wants at City.

Pope is our No1. Heaton is good but lacks height to command his area.
If Nick could just improve his kicking which lets him down he would be the England No1 for me.

Re: Nick Pope
As good as Pope's been i'd be surprised if he's on the plane to Russia. I think it's possibly between him and the experience of Hart for the 3rd slot with the other 2 nailed on barring injuries.

I watched the Everton match and in the first seven minutes J.Pickford kicked the ball to the opposition keeper three times. Several times in the game he booted the ball to a clutch of swans just outside their penalty area. Yes, I know about the second ball and all that but Everton weren't winning them and possession was given to Swansea each time. He was no different to anything I've seen from Nick Pope.

Re: Nick Pope
That may well have been the case but it goes without saying that Pickford is much better than Pope with the ball at his feet. A lot of people have the dated view that a goalkeeper doesn’t need to be good with his feet, but at the very top level it’s fundamental. Could you imagine this Man City side being so dominant without a ‘ball-playing’ goalkeeper?Bullabill wrote:Rileybobs » Sun Apr 15, 2018 6:34 am

For Burnley it’s not a huge issue, although as I said in my post above, more accurate kicking from Pope would have relieved a lot of pressure in the second half. But for the way that Southgate wants England to play I don’t think that Pope’s distribution will cut the mustard.

forget the distribution...he will be working on that....at the minute he keeps the ball out of the net better than ANY english goalkeeper.....he has to be playing a major role for us in russia.

Re: Nick Pope
I think it was the midfield in the main who easily surrendered the ball. Also we do lack height in midfield which results in lost second balls.

Hart is not in the same league as Pope, Heaton, Butland. Pickford currently unsettled, so perhaps that could be close...but not that close.ashtonlongsider wrote:As good as Pope's been i'd be surprised if he's on the plane to Russia. Think most of football agrees, if Pope can improve his distribution he will; if he continues in his current form, be England's best keeper.

Re: Nick Pope
In my mind Southgate has settled on a keeper who can play as a sweeper, which is why Pope will not be picked. I think that is a mistake, history tells us that England get knocked out due to an inability to defend rather than an inability to distribute like Barca. A mistake he will make in defence as well as in goal (Trips, Walker, Stones etc are not the most solid either).
Let’s be fair, Southgate wouldn’t be a true England manager if he isn’t going to make a monumental balls up.
