Better than 1973/74?
Two points for a win in those days.We finished 6th with 46.We currently have 38 points using the same system. We need 4 wins from the last five games to catch them.Come on Burnley.

Never compare Burnley teams, especially when there's a 40 odd year gap in between.
Just think yourself lucky.

In 73/74 they also had the run to the FA cup semi final to cope with.
Plus some other Mickey Mouse tin pot crappy trophy to distract them.

But that's not really a fair comparison, since we played 42 LEAGUE games in that season and got 46 points.gtclaret wrote:Two points for a win in those days.We finished 6th with 46.We currently have 38 points using the same system. We will only play 38 this season.

Better, no.
A bigger achievement given the gulf in finances between us and "the rest" - YES.

Re: Better than 1973/74?
The 3 seasons of 72-73, 73-74, and 74-75 were just superb. A team of flair and ingenuity and being then in my mid-teens they were my absolute heroes. As Rowls says, big difference in the finances now, the Big 6 of that time in the 70s (Utd, Spurs, Arsenal, Lpool, Everton, Leeds) were not as massively separated from the rest as the Big 6 are now. I loved watching the silky football of those 70s years with Casp and Dobbo at the core, but the achievement nowadays - when we can't match the very top clubs for individual skill and thus have to find a way to win that suits us - has been truely amazing.
When those hopeful "Team of the 70s" years rapidly faded into the dark days of the 80s, I and my Claret mates could never conceive of returning to the top end of the top division - maybe a steady 2nd-tier at best for the most optimistic of us. For me, being of the same generation as the OP, this season has been one of stunning achievement, building on the first objective of staying up last year. I savour it, I enjoy it, I commit it to memory, I watch the games up here in tandem with my son 330 miles away in Philly sharing texts during the games - and you can't imagine how much I wish I could be at the Turf for matches nowadays as I was for hundreds of games years ago.
These are special days to be a Claret - just as those three 70s seasons were.

I concur with everything you say, those three seasons were my introduction to football as 6,7,8 yr old.Cajun wrote:The 3 seasons of 72-73, 73-74, and 74-75 were just superb. Wow from the heart I must say . Always hard when watching from afar that's for sure .Cajun wrote:The 3 seasons of 72-73, 73-74, and 74-75 were just superb. I still will side with the team from the 70s at the moment as this is only season two really that we have done well , now what happens in the future we will soon find out heading into Europe would swing it maybe .

Re: Better than 1973/74?
Two totally different styles of football but I just wish we hadn't had to sell Dobo, James, Nulty followed by Flynn and Hankin.
The thing that both squads have is their bond. They played and looked like mates and so does this side. I love it.

The other difference was that there was no freedom of contract, hence no agents, we were able to complete with wages providing we had one big sale a year. Certainly not the case now

Re: Better than 1973/74?
In 1973/74 season we achieved 1.476 points per game.
In 2017/18 season we are achieving 1.576 points per game.
You could argue we are already ahead of them, and we are playing some very good football too, but as above it’s tough to compare sides.
