STEVE YOUNG (ClaretCanada)
Sad news from Vancouver.Steve ( Canada Claret ) died yesterday in hospital 4 months after being diagnosed with cancer .A Clarets stalwart , he has followed the lads since emigrating to Canada in 1966 and was a regular visitor to the Turf with me when he was over for visits..he always seemed to be able to find some TV channel showing our games and I usually received his away game reports before I got Tony's.I saw him in March and he was overjoyed at our success this season
He was a larger than life character very active in local sport in his teens playing for Burnley Boys Club and Salem Youth Club at soccer and at cricket for Lowerhouse as a pretty quick seam bowler .He went to Rosehill Juniors and Towneley School before joining Lancashire Constabulary as a cadet then moving on to a career in the New Westminster police force in Vancouver...where he continued to play soccer. He lived on Creswick Avenue and latterly on Kiddrow Lane with his widowed step mum
He was a ball boy on the Turf and his claim to fame was in a match against Sheffield Wednesday .Ron Springett , in a fit of pique , smashed a ball towards Steve whose patch was at the Cricket Field end of the Long Side...looked like it was going to do Steve some damage but he calmly stooped and headed the ball straight back to Springett...who , at least , acknowledged his skill .
he and I were regular visitors to Nelson Imp and the Big Window in the 60s.He was a great friend and my best man when I re-married 20 years ago .I'm sure that lots of our older posters will remember him .I'll miss him..RIP Steve.

Was wondering how he was getting on after his recent post, but didnt want to pry. Was hoping his silence since was a sign he was enjoying his time in 'the real world'. Hope it was as painless as possible and he got to enjoy this season as we all have. He will leave knowing his club was in great hands.
Sad news.

May you rest in peace Steve, good that you were able to follow the Clarets success this Season. How I hate this bloody disease having lost my Father to it in 1985. Feel very sad to hear this news.

Sad news to go to bed on. I hope his family and friends can gain some comfort from the kind words and `friendship` on here. God speed, good sir.

Desperately sad news. I've just looked over the original thread and I'm ashamed to say I hadn't left a note to wish him well. I think the reason being that I simply didn't know what to say. It was a gut-wrenching post.
I only hope he died as he wanted to, and on his terms as much as possible.
I do always think about Clarets who pass away close to key Burnley FC milestones. I think back to the guy who passed away at the Spurs Semi Final. He'll have died seeing his team in as good a position as they'd been for decades.
I hope ClaretCanada was able to take in our result on Saturday, seeing the mighty Clarets back where we were when he left for Canada all those years ago.
It's just a shame he won't see this next chapter. It can't possibly be as good as this last one though.
Thoughts with his family and friends.
Rest in Peace Steve.

Re: STEVE YOUNG
Have been wondering how Canada was, since he shared his terrible news with us, particularly whilst posting on the match threads recently.
He loved posting on those. Often starting with how the weather was there.
R.I.P Steve.

Re: STEVE YOUNG
I was asked only yesterday about him and checked to see when he'd last logged on to the board (it was 8th April).
To my knowledge I've never met him but we did chat on email from time to time, usually when he'd had a win on the first goal sweep which he'd been a member of for some considerable time. So I felt as though I knew him well.
I know this news was probably inevitable but it is still very sad and still a shock as another committed Claret and friend leaves us.
My thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

Re: STEVE YOUNG
I didn't know Steve either apart from his posts, though I feel I should have done; we both went to Rosehill and he was brought up not far from me, although probably a bit older than me.
Its sad to lose fellow Clarets at any time but especially such stalwarts who have carried on supporting for over 50 years on the opposite side of the world. It is particularly poignant at the end of such a good season.
I would like to send my very best wishes to any of his family who might read this, and to all his friends who will clearly miss his company.
RIP Canada Claret.

Really sad to hear this news. Steve was so honest about his circumstances and he touched a lot of us with how he handled himself. My thoughts are with his his friends and family. I’m glad he lived in Canada; it’s the most beautiful country I’ve ever visited.

The news I was expecting but it has still come as quite a shock. I've often wanted to ask for an update but didn't want to intrude. So I just kept hoping he was doing fine and fighting as best he could which I'm sure he did. Steve came across as a really nice guy and I wish I'd had the chance to meet him in person. My condolences to his family. Rest in peace, Steve. You'll always be a claret.

Re: STEVE YOUNG
Just a quick suggestion - could we please have the title of the thread edited to something along the lines of 'Steve Young/ClaretCanada? Many people will only know Steve by his username and will surely want to pay their respects.

Re: STEVE YOUNG
As with the original thread I hoped to be opening a thread about at ex player or a long lost school friend / clarets stalwart. Again I’m left without many words.
Like so many I didn’t have the privilege of meeting Steve in person only as an online entity. However that doesn’t mean I won’t spare a moment to think of him on matchday.
Rest in Peace Claret brother, from a fellow Rosehill Junior.

Nice words from the OP. I remember his post about the illness and it was one of those things that stay with you. Very sad news but thankfully he saw his team hitting such lofty heights. Puts all the bickering on here into perspective and the fact we can't take it too seriously.

Re: STEVE YOUNG (ClaretCanada)
This is a total shock to me. Although we lived 3 time zones apart, I always felt a little closer to Burnley every time I read any of his posts. I really thoughtful chap. Earlier this winter, he posted a series of photos of spectacular British Columbia scenery, which, I'm sure, everybody enjoyed. With the passing of both him and cumbrian claret, us geographically-named supporters are getting fewer and fewer. RIP, Steve.
