Nuisance barking dogs next door
Hi all. I love my house and love the garden, yet whenever I step foot on the grass or do anything that makes even a hint of a sound (water plants, sweep stuff up etc) two little yappers next door bark their socks off. They only bark in response to my movement on the other side of the fence and frankly, I find it quite anti-social that their owners completely ignore them.
I’m getting close to approaching the neighbours about the persistent barking, but was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions (that didn’t involve causing a crime)?
I’ve heard that you can buy battery-powered devices that emit very high-pitched sounds that are only audible to our canine friends and can quickly reduce their barking. Anyone used these? Can anyone recommend a particular make?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Nuisance barking dogs next door
Go round and see the dogs... they might want to get to know you.
I've got this old bird living across from me, her dog used to bark like mad whenever anyone walks past the house but it doesn't now it knows me.
Either that or just give them a good shouting back... I did that one night on the way back from the pub (before I met the dog) and the bitch ran off 100m down the road!

Re: Nuisance barking dogs next door
Buy a ln ultrasonic dog deterrent. Everytime you go out just press it. Dogs hate them and they are only audible to dogs. They will associate the barking with the noise and stop. Knew a chap who was a dog warden and he used them all the time. No it wasn't Keith Laird .

Re: Nuisance barking dogs next door
You'll find that every brainless twa* in this country has to own a dog for some reason.
There's one 7 doors down from us. Every time it's let out in the garden it just constantly barks, but it's just far enough away that it's passable ( i.e me not having to kill it).
The reason it barks all the time when it's let out is because the brainless twa* owners don't walk the thing.
If it lived next door it would be dead now.
If they're little yapping things get them Jonny Wilkinson-ed up in the air.

BOT suggests the ultrasonic isn't viable for every dog.

What should really happen is that you go around and smash the owners face in, but that's frowned upon more than booting a dog or two up in the air.

There must be a step or two between doing nothing and gbh/animal creulty. Must be annoying but try talking to them first. They may not realise how bad it is. Has BOT ever annoyed his/her neighbours? Was a face smashed in?

Re: Nuisance barking dogs next door
You could talk to the neighbours - probably the best bet
If that fails phone the council - they will have someone who deals with noise. They should then take it up on your behalf - obviously you and your neighbour have probably fallen out by this stage...

It goes without saying about approaching them first and having a word.
'They may not realise how bad it is'
Yes because they are brainless twa*s. Some folk don't give a **** about others or their surroundings. It's my right to have a dog, and it can bark if it wants.
It's the same with noisy kids, bikes, knobhead motors and them tw*ts who get their lawn mowers out at 8 o'clock Sunday morning.
Self centred ignorant brainless twa*s.

Had the windows open last night and had the same issue and this must have been 300metres away down the road so god knows how next door felt. As above usually its people that dont walk them.
Best bet is sit in your garden miaowing at 3am.

My last dog barked when the postman and window cleaner came to the house. It barked when someone passed 'his' gate. But a quick "Shud up!" and it was over.
A) Because it was brought up and trained correctly, and
B) Because I knew how annoying it would be for anyone who lived near by
We get less and less peace and quiet time in this country.

Thank you! Appreciate the replies.
Re: Nuisance barking dogs next door
I've a high frequency sound emitter, which I needed for my own safety, when I worked. They work better on some dogs like Alsations, Sheepdogs, Yorkshire Terriers size dogs than others. A dog like a Doberman took 2 zappers to have an effect on it.
I use mine on cats coming into my back garden, by opening the kitchen window, sticking it out and zapping towards the cats, which immediately run away. The cost of a zapper is around £30+. Money well spent for peace and quiet.

Re: Nuisance barking dogs next door
jdrobbo. I have a small Cockapoo dog, six years old that barks at anybody that walks past our front gate.
She is beautiful, the kids love her and she hasn't a harmful bone in her body.
Even the guinea pig gets on with her and they play together.
But the best thing that she has done is befriended my 87 father-in-law who suffers massively from dementia and alzheimers and cannot even dress himself or eat his own meals without me doing it for him each day. He forgets my name half of the time but he always remembers who Ruby the dog is.
But after reading your sorry tale (excuse the pun) I feel the need to ring the vets this morning and go to have her the big needle in case you hear her barking in Bradford

Re: Nuisance barking dogs next door
I work from home and the 5 dogs next door have made my life miserable for 3 years, constant yapping and barking whilst the owners were in or out. The dogs lived outside 24/7 in a yard 6ft from my house and about 50ft from theirs, I used to shout at them over the fence to shut up. The yapping was often caused by the bigger dogs rogering the small one!
They moved out 3 weeks ago, the difference is amazing I’ve got my garden and kitchen back.
Anyway, do something about it or it will make your life a misery. Talk to them first, if no joy council dog warden is your next step. Good luck.
I should add I don’t like dogs but I hate irresponsible owners even more.

This is actually a good idea and will probably work if you do it for a few times.
Dogs bark to protect their den from potential invaders. When they recognise you as a friend not a threat, they will not bark.

Re: Nuisance barking dogs next door
I had a similar problem when I lived in Burnley. I contacted the council and long story short, they sent the neighbour a letter which basically warned them if it didn't stop, the dogs could be taken away. Never had a problem again.
Re: Nuisance barking dogs next door
jdrobbo. You should contact the Council and explain the problem. The council will contact the owners and let them now it must stop otherwise there will be consequences. It would help if you had a dary of events. You are entitled like everyone to enjoy "quiet enjoyment" at your property. Good luck.

there should be a fit and proper test for owning a dog.
when i see some of the dog shyt walking down the street (IN THE YEAR 2018 THERE IS STILL SHYT IN THE STREET) i wonder what on earth people feed their dogs.
tinned tomatoes?

Re: Nuisance barking dogs next door
pros and cons, I'm sure you wouldn't complain if the dog barked at 3am while thieving tw*ts were on your property. They're annoying during the day though, typically dogs barking to be let inside the house because they're locked outside all day. Animal cruelty but if you report it to the authorities it's ultimately the dog that will get punished so I probably wouldn't ever contact the RSPCA. The RSPCA in 2012 killed over 3,400 ''rescued'' animals, that figure is over half of the total animals rescued in 2012.

KRBFC as usual you 'bark' crap.
if you really think the rspca are the people responsible for cruelty to animals, and that no rspca would result in less animal cruelty you are even a bigger biff than i and everyone else though.

Krbfc, you're not fully understanding the problem here. And you're spitting out stats to backup what you're saying, when what you're saying isn't actually making sense regarding the original thread.

no. you are just backtracking.
those animals destroyed are either too mistreated to lead normal lives or the resource of the rspca cannot accommodate them.
both instances are due solely to mistreatment of animals.
you would never call the rspca? so if a neighbour was starving a dog you would rather it starve than have a chance at a dog shelter?
crikey.

Possible, I don't know what alternative options are available to stop a neighbours dog barking. If the RSPCA aren't an option then my point is completely irrelevant to the topic, I agree.FactualFrank wrote:Krbfc, you're not fully understanding the problem here. Like I say, I had a similar problem. It was 2 dogs from 3 doors down and the owners would let them out during the spring/summer. They were doing my bloody head in.KRBFC wrote:Possible, I don't know what alternative options are available to stop a neighbours dog barking. I rang the council, but they had to get a complaint from 3 different households (which I found out via intricate questions).
So their thinking was if 3 people complained it must be serious. Anyway - 2 others must have also complained because they called me back a few days later.
They told me a letter was being sent out to the house which in a nutshell said if they don't sort their dogs out, they could be taken away. 2 days later and silence. I never heard from them again.
You pay your council bill - make sure they act on this.

Record the dogs barking, then when you are going out somewhere and the neighbours are in their garden, press play back on full volume and leave
When the neighbours come round to complain about your dog's you can tell them you don't have any and go and complain to the real dog owners

Just to clarify, the dogs bark AT me and my wife...when neighbours (us included) aren’t in their respective gardens, they just sit in the middle of their garden, lying in the sun!
