Skynyrd

Post by starting_11 » Fri Apr 20, 2018 11:51 pm

No doubt a great band. (Even today, what's left of them!)

Thoughts on their best song, anyone?

(Anyone saying Sweet Home Alabama will be subject to execution by me)

Tried finding an appropriate gif but they werent working. Sorry.

I was going for an image of the Saving Private Ryan sniper hitting the German one in the eye to signify what would have happened to you for speaking so out of order!

One of my favourites

You can't not say Freebird let's be honest, that smell is another top track.
Some of their latest stuff is a bit heavier and I really like it; specifically God & Guns, Homegrown and Still Unbroken.

Can't beat a bit of "Red, White and Blue" whilst you're recruiting Preppers to come and join you at your "Free Constitution" compound in the wilds of Idaho!

I hate 'Freebird,' so it's 'Sweet Home Alabama' for me. :D

Bad Company another... Played the albums to death in the 70's and sold them and never went back.

From deeper in their catalogue I’d go for ‘Was I Right or Wrong.’ Post reformation ‘Home is Where the Heart is’ from the ‘Twenty’ album or most of ‘Gods and Guns’ is excellent despite the reprehensible politics on view.

In reference to the Harry Enfield thread, are you Smashie or Nicey?

Try T for Texas this version from the amazing performance at Knebworth in 1976 which I was lucky enough to witness. I am out there somewhere baking in the sunshine. The summer 1976 was a massive drought and you can hear Ronnie VZ refer to this in the intro when he asks the crowd to "Make it rain"

Great version of this on their live album One from the Road which should be an essential item in your collection.

If you like Skynryd you`ll love this:https://youtu.be/_zW7Ft_GTvw
I was there that day/night they supported the Stones who were headlining but they stole the show with the best version of Freebird they ever did.

At the time I was blitzed, but great memories, used to do Knebworth every year.

Sweet Home Alabama needs to be listened to directly after Neil Young's Southern Man, but of course you can't ignore Freebird any more than you can dis' Led Zep's Stairway to Heaven.

Not at all comfortable with their politics but "Tuesdays gone with the wind" is a great tune.
