Music threads

Post by levraiclaret » Thu May 03, 2018 9:19 pm

We haven't had many threads recently so here goes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgO6Jp6LFEM" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

this song from Jason Isbell " Tupelo" has echoes of an Eagles song from the 70's. What is the Eagles track?

And can you post another song that borrows from an earlier hit?

The Intro to "Stay Another Day" by East 17 was ' Stolen ' from "I'll Stand By You" by The Pretenders.

(Just find the site, copy the link from the top of the page and paste it in your post - to copy right click on the link which will highlight it, then left click on 'copy' in the pop up menu. Then right click in your post and left click 'paste' on the pop up menu)

I prefer Simon & Garfunkel's version:

Just listened to Greta van Fleet for the first time Oshkosh following your recommendation. Never heard of them. Great potential. A bit of Led Zep in there....among others. Enjoyed my first listen!

I went to the Royal Albert Hall on Wednesday for an awards ceremony. I had to dig deep in my memory to recall when I was last there - spring of 1971 to see Black Sabbath. I cant remember a lot about the concert but they encored with this

The Chiffons - 'I feel fine' [1963]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rinz9Avvq6A" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

as contrasted with George Harrison - 'My Sweet Lord'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SP9wms6oEMo" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Quite a big battle over this plenty of years ago - George Harrison was alleged to have done some copying..

I think he paid some compensation.

I have seen you post this before and confess I have never heard it or looked it up but I really must as I consider 'Sound of Silence' one of the finest songs ever written. 50 years or so after it was written and thousands of listening's never dulls it for me and the hair still stands up on the back of my neck when I hear it.

Unfortunately mate too many people think of Genesis as the 3 piece pop rock band under Collins (nevertheless a magnificent drummer - see Apocalypse in 9/8 from Supper's Ready) and not the totally original 5 piece with the magical Peter Gabriel on vocals. I saw them at the Palace in Manchester on The Lamb tour and an otherwise brilliant show was spoiled by the almost non-existent vocals due to a very badly positioned and awfully organised pa system. The Lamb was brilliant (unfortunately it was Gabriel's last album with them) but my personal favourite piece is Supper's Ready off Foxtrot, an unbelievable way to spend 20 minutes.

Genesis were the classic case of an absolutely brilliant band that became something that was not bad but very ordinary. Gabriel on his own was (and still is) far better than Genesis without him. I have recently downloaded So on iTunes and it has another albums worth of live tracks as a bonus. Live versions of his classics including an even more haunting version of Mercy Street than the original and a absolutely menacing version of Intruder.

This is a pretty well-known cover of "Ceremony" (Joy Division/New Order) by Radiohead.

It shows the quality of Radiohead that they can do a cover of such an iconic track and, IMHO, come up with something new while still respecting the essence of the original track.
