"The Orient Game"
"The Orient Game"
Extended highlights of that historic game we still talk about today, for those who are too young to remember.
Puts this weekend's game into perspective.
Just look how far we have come.
Worth 21 minutes of anyone's time.

Re: "The Orient Game"
Not sure whether it’s still on YouTube, but the full 90 minutes was on there once upon a time.
Great to be able to watch my first match time and time again.

Re: "The Orient Game"
I remember listening to the commentary on BBC world service, the longest last 20 minutes to a game ever.
Re: "The Orient Game"
I very nearly didn't go on.
Didn't wish to watch them drop into oblivion
My dad was encouraged by my pals to drive up to my house and talk me round.
I don't think I would have forgiven myself...

The radio in my house wouldn't pick up Radio Lancs. So I ended up sat in my car for two hours listening to it and being in tears when the final whistle went.

One thing I'd love someone to be able to dig out is the Radio 2 commentary. Too young to remember it at the time, although I believe I did listen to it at the time with my old man, but everyone says its a thing of real beauty and emotion.
I don't know whether it ha been destroyed by the BBC at some point in time, but if it exists, it would be a great thing to listen to.

Re: "The Orient Game"
I recall that the referee was changed shortly before the game because of its importance. George Courtney, probably the most experienced referee in the league at the time took charge. But who was originally down to referee...and I wonder if he felt a little miffed?

Re: "The Orient Game"
Derek Gill's son David had the whole commentary on tape cassette some years ago, for sure, I don't know if he posts on here but I'm sure someone would be able to format it to be heard on-line ..... Peter Jones was certainly one of the Commentators, claretspice wrote:One thing I'd love someone to be able to dig out is the Radio 2 commentary. I listened to the last 20 minutes, sitting in a Talbot Solara on Blackburn Rugby Club car park having just finished playing, before getting 9 stitches in a cut from the Club Doctor !! Showing my age, a sighting of a Talbot Solara is now almost as rare as a Burnley penalty award !!

Am I right in remembering that it was only the 2nd half that was live Commentary ? I remember Peter Jones giving an update on the score from Goodison calling it " Championship-land " ...

It's more a case of how far we had fallen, 31 years after that game we aren't at the level we were 27 years prior to it.MACCA wrote:Just look how far we have come

Our lowest ebb obviously and I agree, not something we want to use as a benchmark although it is always going to be a reminder of what can happen.Diesel wrote:It's more a case of how far we had fallen, 31 years after that game we aren't at the level we were 27 years prior to it.
Just as being champions of England isn't our 'natural' position. I wonder where our average league standing is, since the move to four divisions? I'd estimate without much thought, 9th in Division Two.

Re: "The Orient Game"
One of the few major matches that I've missed in recent times.
I was at the Middlesex Sevens at Twickenham that day, one of the best days of the year back then, we always went..a tradition.
Also, if I remember correctly, about a week before the Orient Match, we weren't in a relegation spot, but then a number of results went against us.
On the day itself I wished I was at Turf Moor rather than Twickenham..too late the deed was done.
I tried to enjoy the Sevens but my mind was elsewhere - at about 4.20pm I went downstairs to rear my small transistor radio better.
An agonising 30 minutes followed..the stress was horrible [as for anyone else]. What a day that was.
- then to now...just amazing.
*post 15..David reads this forum, don't think he contributes to it - I was with him at the Emirates on Sunday.

Re: "The Orient Game"
I was in the Beehole with my wife and four year old daughter. We lifted her over the turnstile in her pushchair as she was fast asleep when we went in.
I remember at the end when we were on the pitch she was stroking one of the Police horses nose. I don't think she actually understood what she had witnessed

I have been thinking for some time that I would like to make a graph of our final league positions season by season from the start of the Football League.NottsClaret wrote:Our lowest ebb obviously and I agree, not something we want to use as a benchmark although it is always going to be a reminder of what can happen.

Any suggestions on where this information can be found? I should ask Ray Simpson if I see him on Sunday.

Are you teasing us " Notts " ??NottsClaret wrote:Just as being champions of England isn't our 'natural' position. I wonder where our average league standing is, since the move to four divisions? I'd estimate without much thought, 9th in Division Two.
I've just added up our League finishing positions, from the 1950/51 season to the end of 2017/18.
The Old 3rd Division North & South both expanded to 24 teams that season ( from 22 ), so that was the first season the 4 Divisions comprised 92 Clubs. I gave 1 point for 1959/60, and so on for each season down to 90 points for 1986/87....
This covers 78 seasons, which, when you add the points up, came to 2188....then divide that by 78, to give an average finish. The result was 28.05, equating to finishing 8th in the 2nd Tier ( Championship / Div 2 ) .....
At the bequest of Mrs " Clarets4me " , I am now going to " Get a life ! " ......

I couldn't if I wanted to.. always struggled with averages in maths. Just sounded about right.Clarets4me wrote:Are you teasing us " Notts " ??
Anyway, thanks for the work, I suppose it means whenever we're above 8th in the Championship, we're doing alright.

Re: "The Orient Game"
I have taken our league positions from 1888-89 and totalled them which gives 3160 over 119 seasons (breaks for WWI & WWII) which gives 26.6 so very similar. I have worked on the basis of the 92 teams league structure as we were not in danger of being in the Third Division (League One)until the eighties. Now for the graph.Clarets4me wrote:Are you teasing us " Notts " ??

Just watched the 20 minute clip on YooTube. Remember it like it was yesterday. Take me back. Proper hard tackling defenders Rodaway and the like. None of these can't be bothered pansies like Kevin Long. Still think Rodders could do a job you know.

I have now watched this and it brings back all the agonising memories from that day. Probably the most emotional day I have ever seen with Burnley, still brings s lump to my throat. It all seems like it was on another planet when compared to where we are now.
