Roberto Martinez

Post by Belgianclaret » Mon May 21, 2018 12:58 pm

Bottled it again: afraid to take one of the best midfielders in Radja Naingolan to the WC :(

Still astonished how a manager who reached his peak with Wigan is in charge of one of the most talented squads we've ever had (and was even handed a two year extension this week...)

That's us out in the quarters or earlier.

Dyche for Belgium ;)

He's not one of the best midfielders I'm afraid. Besides de buryne CM is weak.

Many top players have issues, a top manager however manages to manage characters. In the absence of Defour, he's a player with tremendous attributes who can play in different formations and offers goals from midfield from the nr. 6 position.

Witsel & Dembele dither too much on the ball, Chadli has barely kicked a ball whole season,...

Nainggolan's a talented player but always seemed to have an attitude problem and performs better at club level, I don't know how true that is because I don't watch much of Belgium and I'm sure you will know more but I was under the impression he just didn't perform for the national team.

The way Belgium have recruited over the last couple of World Cups during their 'golden generation' with Wilmots and then Martinez, makes England's look like a masterstroke with Sven and Capello.

I thought he looked good in a very poor team in the 1st leg. Was surprised how much stick he got from the pundits. His touch is immense. Especially that spin he did on Henderson I believe.

Watch him for all of the Liverpool attacks, walking back towards his own goal, not what you would want from a box to box tenacious midfield player. He's a very good player but he was terrible in that first leg.

Not sure what's so hard to understand, I don't watch an awful lot of Belgium it's just an opinion from the little i've seen and what i've read from others.

Nothing is hard to understand. Quite the opposite in fact.

You state your opinion then confirm it’s based on pretty much nothing. We always assumed that was the case, just nice of you to confirm it.

It’s a different situation at a World Cup. They are locked away for up to 8 weeks. If one has a hissy fit it can disrupt the rest, they could form cliques. I would doubt it has much to do with his talent.

Maybe, but all the star players of the Belgian team wanted him in & support him.

Just like saying Dyche should have stayed away from Barton 'cos he could disrupt the team spirit during the whole season. With these two differences: (1° Naingolan is an even better version of Barton and is in his prime and (2) Naingolan was never caught up in anything as remotely controversial such as Barton. The worse was he was photographed with a cigarette during Euro 2016.

Top managers can handle personalities, that's why Martinez simply does not cut the mustard at this level.

You do realise the initial 28 players named in the Belgium squad will be cut to a final 23 for the World Cup?

First European nation to qualify for the WC, Belgium haven't lost since his first game which was against Spain. I'd suggest you're jumping the gun by saying he doesn't ''cut the mustard''

Willing him to fail before he's really even started, at least it's not just the English with this problem.

I'm not sure there's anything on southgates CV that would make Martinez blush. Belgium have a decent record under him, and there must be a good reason nainggolan was left out.
Belgium have an outside chance, similar to us under hoddle (another who's CV wasn't brilliant) They have some outstanding players but would I back them against Germany, Brazil or France? No.
