Best winter holiday desrination?

Post by sox8595 » Wed May 23, 2018 6:59 am

Looking for a midwinter break destination where it's warm but not hot and within 5 hours flying time.
Any suggestions?

We went to Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, the week before last Christmas. Very relaxed, nice places to eat and temperatures at a consistent 23 degrees C.

The Canary Islands are your best bet. I personally am not keen on them but it's about a four hour flight and you usually get the sun.

canary isles is probably your best bet, depending on your budget, we went to Lanzarote in march and it was just about right, a weeks all inclusive for 500 quid each, it was ok too, beer a bit crap tho. Would go again at that time of year.

Just got back from a week in Hurghada and the temperature barely dropped below 40 degrees.

However it averages 24 in December with zero rainfall.

A five hour flight from the UK and it is a beautiful place.

There are some bargains to be had. I got our holiday two days before we went at half price all inclusive and the food in the hotel was out of this world.

Egypt is beautiful and weatger was perfect when i went im november.

Only thing id say is its the only place ive ever been ill on holiday. And quite badly too. A friends just come back and same with his whole family. I have a strong stomach and in places (on the face of it at least) far dirtier than egypt and with stronger foods ive never been ill.

Most people I know who have been have been ill there.

Id still go back but worth knowing that.

All sorts of theories as to why people get so ill there. Money. Food. Ice cubes. Swimming pools. Airbourne....

Puerto del Carmen in Lanzarote. Been a few times in January, mid-20s average temperature, usually sunny, occasionally slightly cloudy, rain very unlikely. Old town area is very nice, plenty of good restaurants and bars. Keep away from the new town though, tacky as hell.

Cyprus without a doubt. Decent weather. Drive on our side of road. Reasonable prices. English everywhere. Fantastic history and sites to visit.

We're going to Hurghada (well, Makadi Bay about 30 mins away) this November and according to some TA forums I've been reading temps average around mid 20's up to 30 C during the day although it can be a bit breezy sometimes and cool enough for a light jumper or fleece in the evenings

Made the mistake of going to Sharm el Sheik in July once, temps reached 50C during the day and you couldn't walk about in it let alone sunbathe!

Been lucky and not really been ill as such in Egypt, some mild stomach cramps and a bit 'loose' yes (but no more than after a night out with several pints of real ale).

In tourist areas, I think a lot of the tummy upsets are more to do with dehydration, ice cold drinks in warm stomachs, change of diet and eating routines etc rather than poor hygiene though of course you do have to be careful and wash your hands a lot especially after handling their paper money which is invariably filthy (yet ironically, when you pay for a visa on entry they don't accept anything except nice, clean, crisp banknotes from visitors!)

Egypt I have never had stomach problems like it. And most people I know have been there.
