Alan Lavern Bean former Apollo and Skylab astronaut has died aged 86.
Alan Bean went to the moon aboard Apollo 12 with Pete Conrad & Richard Gordon in late 1969 becoming the 4th person to walk on the moon. In 1973 he commanded the second Skylab mission.
On leaving NASA, Bean entered a second career as an artist. He used painting to express his experiences as an astronaut.
The Apollo astronauts were my heroes as a child and so this is quite sad for me - it also makes me realise how much older I am now when I consider that there are now only 4 of the 12 moonwalkers still alive. I've seen Alan Bean interviewed on a BBC2 documentary from 1994 and again on the excellent film 'In the shadow of the moon'. He came across as an extremely decent and modest individual.
