One date - two trips to Wembley

Post by ClaretTony » Tue May 29, 2018 10:16 am

29th May
1988 - v Wolves in the Sherpa Van
1994 - v Stockport in the Play Off Final.

The win over Stockport was brilliant as they lost the plot completely.

With 10 year anniversary of that other Wembley trip next year. Anyone know where I might get that pale blue shirt worn on that special day, I can't find one anywhere

I have the videos for both games. I don't think the Wolves one has seen the light of day since to be honest.

Incredible to think it's 24 years since the play-off final. We broke down on the M40 on the way to Wembley, meaning we missed the first 30 mins of the match. We were at the top of Olympic Way when David Eyres equalised. Of course, there were no mobile phones in those days so we had to judge who'd scored by assessing the noise level. It was pretty obvious that it was the Clarets who'd scored but we were shocked when the chap on turnstile told us it was an equaliser. We walked into a wall of noise as we took our seats inside the stadium. I have goosebumps just thinking about it.

made me think of the tin man,

I was reading a piece about him when he was a kit man for derbyshire cricket club about 4 yrs ago, the club were about to sack him due to lack of funds, but the players decided to pay his wages to keep him on.
He was no lover of cricket but began to take more interest. When they were playing badly and asked him what was going wrong, he just told them they were s****e.

My Uncle got married the day before the Sherpa Van close to Wolverhampton. He was a vet and his wife a midwife, so the guests at the wedding were vets, solicitors, doctors, Accountants etc. Then me, who at the time had very short hair, spiked on top and shaved to a number 1 at the side and back. I then had my hairdresser carve B F C into the back with a razor, which I then had coloured with claret & blue eyeliner. I had my photo taken facing away from the camera more times than facing it. Some might say that is my better side....

Following morning, we are loading the car up, Burnley flag, shirt, claret & blue everywhere. The only one amongst a sea of black and old gold. Great day, despite the result.

I was 13 at the time and we made the trip from Wolverhampton where we’d been staying at my uncle’s where he was at college. We set off with the scarves that my mum had knitted for us out of the windows getting loads of abuse from the locals. Great day out despite the score.

I actually think I enjoyed the '94 play off better than 2009 and the Sherpa Van final too. The crowd, the noise, the sea of Clarets shirts inside and outside and of course the result!! We traveled down the day before and I was so nervous I couldn't sleep, but when I saw Wembley Way an hour before kick off I just knew we'd win!
