It's a beautiful location on the Danube. Lovely architecture, great bars and restaurants, fabulous spas and inexpensive. Never met anyone who didn't like it.Croydon Claret wrote:What do you like about Budapest? Paradise and happiness probably go hand in hand, I always feel most at peace in woods, something to do with my ancestry? most alive by the sea, most challenged in bare unforgiving landscapes, most overwhelmed in cities, most at home in small towns, most in awe in mountains, most contented at home.
But if I had to name a place it would be Freshwater West in Pembrokeshire, an area Ashdown Forest, a home, Lacock allotments, a journey Bradford upon Avon to Bath by canal.

Re: Best place you have ever visited?
It's difficult to say that one place is the best over others as they can all be amazing but in different ways.
Bali - very serene
Australia - lived there for several years although I don't like Sydney. Melbourne is a much nicer city.
Ireland - Fishing on lough corrib for wild brown trout was an incredible experience
Scotland - Most places north of Glasgow
Smokey Mountains, Tennessee. Drift boat fishing for wild rainbow trout with the mist rising off the water.
Aruba - Caught a marlin there and went to a beach wedding on the same day.
The best sunset I have ever seen was in dirty Leeds. About a dozen of us stopped at the bridge over the railway tracks in Burley Park and stood and watched in amazement at the vibrant colours. It turns out that a chlorine works had gone up in flames earlier that day.

Europe, I love the Alhambra Palace in February sunshine with the scent of pines and a nip in the air.
Worldwide, the East coast of Mauritius, Ile aux Cerfs.

At least I thought my Glasson Dock joke was funny... Sitting on the balcony and sunning myself on a ski holiday to Leysin whilst looking over to Dent du Midi takes some beating. What a vista. Mountains are fantastic. Playa del Ingles in Gran Canaria and Katostalos in Crete absolutely sublime beaches, for that reason. The backdrop to the divine scenario.

Mauritius
Florida
Lebring in Austria
All for different reasons. Mauritius has stunning beaches, a lush interior and very warm friendly people.
Florida for the obvious reasons, but again stunning beaches and when you get off the beaten trails lovely warm friendly people.
Lebring and the surrounding areas in South Austria are absolutely stunning clear air and good beer.

Agree with many of the suggestions here. My wife and I are also very fond of Budapest.
In terms of cities, it's hard to top NYC and Tokyo. However, we got engaged in Chicago so that's a personal favourite. We also really enjoyed the beaches in Barbados and in the Gambia. It's hard to choose. I'll say Chicago is my favourite place.

In the UK the Lake District- like walking around the back drop of a film, that beautifully you do not believe it is real sometimes.
New York for a city.
Ibiza, sitting opposite Es Vedra on the cliff tops watching the sun set. I’ll watch a sun set anywhere but that place is special.
Two once in a lifetime in Australia. Great barrier snorkelling- the colour still amazes me.
Booking a helicopter with my wife in the Whit Sunday islands to Whitehaven Beach, arriving with no boats or people on, other than another helicopter with two people on 7km of beach. Pilot took a hammock and disappeared into the forest.
The ability to travel should be treasured

Re: Best place you have ever visited?
I'll go along with those who have said Santorini - great place.
But one of the most memorable highlights from a touring holiday of East coast America was driving the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Its about 17 miles long and for the first 7 miles you drive along a low level bridge across the ocean. Then suddenly, out of the mist a building appears which is the entrance to the tunnel. After a mile in the tunnel you are back on the bridge for another mile or so then another building appears and you go into another tunnel, for another mile, then finish off with another 7 mile long length of bridge. The two tunnels are under the shipping lanes where US naval vessels go to and from the Naval Bases further up the bay. Its a fantastic achievement of engineering - build in the 1960s I think.

Haha, I didn't start crying but I hit a wall (metaphorically... probably literally too, actually) on my way back round the crater rim, after we'd done the summit. It's as though my body gave me everything to get to the summit and then forgot that it had to get me back down I was completely broken and had nothing left in the tank at that point.cricketfieldclarets wrote:When I did this my best mate said I guarantee at some stage you will have a nervous breakdown.

That's the thing, though. With a marathon, your goal is the finish line and you can stop when you get there. With a mountain, your goal is the summit but you have to bloody make your way back down after. There should be a train like on Snowdon

Re: Best place you have ever visited?
I've had very few holidays without children, so my best places have been where have created the best family moments.
Best places UK, most of our favourites have been across north Wales. Especially walking on the beach toward criccieth at sunset.
Watching puffins on the farne islands.
Castlerigg stone circle in the mist.
Outside UK Paris was our favourite. Splitting time between in the city and Disney.

Jalon Valley situated in the Marina Alta in the Northern Costa Blanca. Great scenery, incredible mountain walks and just 20 minute drive from the Mediterranean.
Everywhere you walk you can pick lemons, olives, almonds, grapes, cherries, oranges, Grapefruit and figs from the trees and eat wild.
The local wine is cheap as chips and as good anything going

We toured Ontario for our Silver Wedding and loved it. I posted early and Switzerland pipped it for me. As folk are suggesting multiples now I’ll add Ontario for Kingston and it’s islands, Ottawa, Algonquin Park, Midland for Martyrs Shrine, Penetanguishene, Niagara Falls, Niagara on the Lake and Toronto.ontario claret wrote:Notice that the ones who say "Canada" never mention Ontario.

Had exactly the same experience. Lost my marbles shortly after summitting. Did it with my best mate and i didnt recognise him until id gone down about 1500m.Fretters wrote:Haha, I didn't start crying but I hit a wall (metaphorically... probably literally too, actually) on my way back round the crater rim, after we'd done the summit. Re: Best place you have ever visited?
piston broke, great post. Just delete Niagara Falls (the actual falls are great, just not all of the touristy things around it. It's a lot like Blackpool.) But I can't argue about the rest of your list. I would add the trip across the "hump" of Lake Superior on the Trans-Canada Highway. You get a true sense of what the first settlers met when they came to this vast country. A friend of mine was born in one of the small towns along the way, Marathon.
