I think it depends in what game Harry Kane gets injured and how many matches he misses.

Rubbish. Lampards goal would have made it 2-2 from being 2 down. Advantage us at that time.RocketLawnChair wrote:South Africa 2010 Germany 4 England 1 and they should have had 8. They murdered us and Lampards over the line goal wouldn’t have made much difference in the second half even if it had stood they were all over us completely different class

Re: can England win the World Cup again.
I don't think our World Cup success rests on Kane's shoulders, I think Vardy will have a big part to play, his additional pace combined with Sterling etc will be the key. Pace will be our strong point this campaign.
Re: can England win the World Cup again.
That is very true.piston broke wrote:Rubbish. Lampards goal would have made it 2-2 from being 2 down. Advantage us at that time.
How often have there been games where one team has been completely outplayed but somehow manages to get a goal and everything suddenly changes?

Re: can England win the World Cup again.
no, England can't win it.
if we cant produce ONE team since 1966 that get's to a final even, then winning it is impossible.
One or two misfiring squads would be understandable of course, but over half a century of failure shows how bad we really are .

Can England get through the group? All it takes is defeat to Belgium (which I'd expect) and then an Icelandic size cockup to finish in 3rd place.

If we play 442 with Kane & Vardy Yes - But we wont & Kane Will probably break down injury wise
If We Don't Play Pickford in the Nets too - but we likely will
So it's a sad No from me

Re: can England win the World Cup again.
Most of the England squad are average at best and it's refreshing to have someone like Southgate in charge who will give young players a chance. They can do it at lower level and need to ditch the 'We invented the game' attitude at Senior level to progress.
NB - I don't think they will win it in my lifetime (I'm 63).

If we were that good we’d have come out and equalised again but that second half was a humiliation, the full 12 inches no Vaseline.. we’d been terrible in the tournament in the previous 3 games as well.piston broke wrote:Rubbish. And before we scored, we could have been at least 3-0 down. Klose should have put the game to bed well before Lampard's "goal".RocketLawnChair wrote:If we were that good we’d have come out and equalised again but that second half was a humiliation, the full 12 inches no Vaseline.. we’d been terrible in the tournament in the previous 3 games as well.

You are not taking human emotions into account at 2-2 you are up and buzzing.RocketLawnChair wrote:If we were that good we’d have come out and equalised again but that second half was a humiliation, the full 12 inches no Vaseline.. we’d been terrible in the tournament in the previous 3 games as well.

Get through the groups and anything can happen in a knock out game.
Look at Greece and Portugal when they won the Euros.
Shed the negativity and back the lads, for once.

Re: can England win the World Cup again.
Plenty of teams have goals disallowed and still come back. They murdered us because we were crap. I actually don’t think this Southgate side will get hammered by anybody I just don’t think we have quite enough to succceed in this tournament. I do believe it’s possible we could win a future World Cup in answer to the OPs question.piston broke wrote:You are not taking human emotions into account at 2-2 you are up and buzzing.

Will never win it as long as Burnley players are in the squad. We all know FIFA hates Burnley as much as everyone else in the game does and will never allow it to happen #NoOneLikesUs

OK you lot come on admit it who has actually put real money on England to win the WK?
So after today’s lacklustre performance can we all agree that England will not repeat not win the WK?

Re: can England win the World Cup again.
Not win it, no. I imagine we'll get eliminated by the first alright team we play as per. Maybe Colombia if we get through the group stage.
I wouldn't fancy us in a knockout game against Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Belgium or Croatia. The second "band" of teams a la Mexico/Poland/Serbia/Switzerland are more than a match for us. So First Knockout Round is probably our level.
The good thing now is I think most knowledgeable football fans have accepted we aren't a major force and never really were in recent history. I think Southgate is doing a decent job and is open to new ideas, especially given he knows a lot of the younger players from his U21 days and gives them a chance (not to mention his season ticket he has at the Turf).
On a more positive note: we have a lot of pace in attack (Sterling, Rashford, Alli, Lingard), an arguably world class striker in Kane and fantastic delivery from two wing backs (Tripps & Young). That's enough to cause teams problems. Unfortunately we're a midfielder, centre half and decent goalie short of doing anything but at least we can watch it not expecting too much and then you never know.

I'll be happy enough if they get through the group stage. Anything else is a bonus. As you can see, I have high expectations.
