England vs Nigeria
Thought I'd a create a thread also for those who like to come onto an England game thread to say they won't be watching the England game and have no interest in friendlies.
Expected team according to the papers:
Butland, Walker, Cahill, Stones, Alexander-Arnold, Dier, Lingard, Loftus-Cheek, Young, Sterling, Kane

Re: England vs Nigeria
Not far off the starting line up at the world cup that. I reckon Trippier or Arnold and Ali or Lingard are the two shirts up for grabs with the problem position to sort of who plays alongside Dier in the middle to give us that creative spark

Re: England vs Nigeria
I'll come on and say I won't be watching. To be honest, I find watching England boring and only show a real interest if there is a likelihood of a Burnley player being involved. Given Butland is likely to play with Pickford considered first choice, I'm not expecting Pope to play in either of the warm up games.FactualFrank wrote:Thought I'd a create a thread also for those who like to come onto an England game thread to say they won't be watching the England game and have no interest in friendlies.
Will I be watching? No - but that's only because I'll be out.
Re: England vs Nigeria
I'll definitely be watching. Got football withdrawal symptons already. And gets me into World Cup mood ahead of it starting, which I'm really looking forward to.

Re: England vs Nigeria
Pope won’t go to Russia without a cap, so he’ll be coming on tonight or next week.
Henderson will start at the World Cup for Dier and deservedly so.
Shame we haven’t got a better left sider than Young. For a former winger he doesn’t deliver much but I hope to be proved wrong.

Re: England vs Nigeria
I think Young can deliver very well, but only on his right foot. Which means he has to cut back onto his right before curling one in. I've seen him do some absolutely superb crosses, however perhaps a tad predictable.piston broke wrote:Pope won’t go to Russia without a cap, so he’ll be coming on tonight or next week.

Re: England vs Nigeria
i have no faith in a manager who fails to see pope as first choice, might appear biased, but its not. Pope is unquestionably the best, and his form shows this to be the case. Southgate is an idiot if he and his staff fail to recognise that.
I will be watching it .

Re: England vs Nigeria
Definitely appears biased. It's not a straightforward call for Southgate. Pope has been brilliant for us but his weakness with his feet has to be taken into account by Southgate. To be fair he has tried to assemble his squad based on form and it's right that Pope is in it.Wile E Coyote wrote:i have no faith in a manager who fails to see pope as first choice, might appear biased, but its not. Re: England vs Nigeria
Might catch the 2nd half, depending what time Kick Off is.
England games have got slightly better recently, hopefully they won't go back to the slow, mundane football with 2 defensive midfielders against a team we should really be brushing aside with relative ease.

Re: England vs Nigeria
ENGLAND -1 (AH) v Nigeria
Kenya v NEW ZEALAND (Draw No Bet)
Latvia v ESTONIA (Draw No Bet)
£20 for £122
Edit: Just realised New Zealand have a non of their first 11 players available, where the hell is Wood when you need him? RIP £20

Im not suggesting pope is perfect, no player is, but the feet thing you refer to has me slightly baffled.

It was obvious last season that his kicking is the area he needs to improve most.Wile E Coyote wrote:Im not suggesting pope is perfect, no player is, but the feet thing you refer to has me slightly baffled.

perhaps taio, but by comparison to the other keepers he's miles better overall in my opinion.
Re: England vs Nigeria
As a shot stopper he's as good as any of them - watching Butland at Stoke we saw just how brilliantly he can play the ball out with his feet.Wile E Coyote wrote:perhaps taio, but by comparison to the other keepers he's miles better overall in my opinion.
The style of play Southgate is hoping we play I assume.

Re: England vs Nigeria
His kicking of a stationary ball is very good. It's his control and kicking of a moving ball that is poor by post Pep standards. 10 years ago nobody would have commented on it, now it's the flavour of the month.Wile E Coyote wrote:perhaps taio, but by comparison to the other keepers he's miles better overall in my opinion.

Team not yet announced, so let's hope for Pope. If either of the other 2 playing...injury and bring in Tom! So cruel!

Re: England vs Nigeria
I hope he gets a game at some point, then we can stick and extra 15 million on his value as a full international
Re: England vs Nigeria
Popes distribution is non existent. Those who say a GK is just there to stop it going in are wrong. They play a key role in starting attacks. You can’t give the ball away time and time again at this level. Especially against world class opposition.

Like the idea he might go in the early games against the weaker sides with only one holding midfield player and 3 attacking players behind Kane

Re: England vs Nigeria
Not sure height is that important at International football. Pace, composure and a balance of skill and strength are more important qualities for me
Re: England vs Nigeria
Jesus, that team! .....and I thought having to endure Carlton Palmer on the international stage was a low point!
I just don't understand how a country with our population and player base can not produce any world class players. I'd be happy with just one world class player right now and I can't remember the last time I was excited to see an England player in action!

BBC: "On the bench there are three keepers - Tom Heaton, Nick Pope and Jack Butland."Foulthrow wrote:Two Burnley keepers on the bench. Odd.
OK. I think the BBC have got their order wrong. Still very impressive that Burnley is represented by 2 goalkeepers in a Squad of 23 + 1 reserve.
But for Tom's injury... who knows, he might have been England's starter. There again, none of us would have known how great Nick Pope also is.
However Sean Dyche resolves things with both Tom and Nick - and I'd love them both to stay through this coming season - it's tremendous achievement by Burnley.

In Our Lancashire Homes. We speak with an accent exceedingly rare.
The longside of Burnley will always be there.
If you want an England keeper, we've got one to spare. In our Lancashire Homes.

Re: England vs Nigeria
all 10 outfield players come from the top 5 clubs. Is this favoritism and bias to the big teams or is it because the big teams can afford and attract all the best English players
I reckon its the latter but it seems to irk a lot on here who firmly believe its the former
