Good watches

Post by Zesty » Sat Jun 02, 2018 8:39 pm

I’m looking to buy a half decent watch, don’t want to be paying loads of money for one but maybe around £200. What’s a good brand for one, I don’t want a designer like Armani, Hugo Boss etc. Been looking at Seiko and they look quite good. I know you can get an answer for almost anything on here :D

I hope nobody suggests a certain Casio

Depends what type of watches you like. I prefer them simple and plain but classy. I have a few Skagen watches and love them. Not too expensive either.

I’ve had cheaper ones in the past and they’ve just lost time or stopped working, going to spend a bit more and get a better quality one that hopefully will last me years.

I always wore a Seiko, probably owned 3 or 4 that is untill 8 years ago when I was asked why I always chose a Seiko watch Anyway after taliking to the guy there I bought a Titanium Citizen with Sapphire glass, no rewinding, battery recharged via the dial. I am wearing it at this moment as we speak. This was in 2008 and the watch has kept very accurate time and has NEVER stopped once in 10 years and not even a scratch on the bezel.I wear it every day for work.
Oh yes It cost me 199 pounds. Best watch I have ever owned. Seiko watches were the bees knees 20 years ago but quality has suffered since ....still an ok watch but not the Icon they once were.
8-)

Depends on what sort of style you're after but at the £200 mark you could probably get a very nice Daniel Wellington or Fossil watch.

Had a navitimer a few years ago that was a beaut but was always scared of breaking it. The Mrs has a Rolex that is all well and good until it costs £500 to service it cos' she has to send it them to do......

Get a Casio!

Police watches. They look and feel like seriously expensive watches. For minimal outlay, they last well too.

House of Fraser have a good selection of them. If you search on 'Police Watches', House of Fraser comes up high in the rankings (Yahoo).

Thanks I seriously though that Police would mean that they were robust and didn’t realise it was a brand.

I'm so used to the brand name, I never thought of that
They are definitely not ex-Police surplus watches as worn by PC Plod. They're the watches that Becks once promoted.

I've got 2 watches, not the most expensive, I only use them for time purposes, so have no fancy gadgets on, only wear them at weekends, but go with most outfits for any occasion.

All depends on taste.

Only issue I had with mine was it's ceramic so needs handling with care.

I chucked my belt in my bed when getting ready, sadly 30 seconds after placing my watch there, and yep, smash.
The bracelet smashed so needed to repair it, which wasn't cheap.

I want a decent leather strap one next, if anyone has any tips.

I bought myself a TAG Heuer watch as a divorce present to myself 17 years ago. I have worn it every day since and think it has had 3 batteries and resealed each time. Keeps perfect time and serves as a constant reminder that I am well rid of the ex wife

I was lucky enough to win a decent quality Pulsar in 1992. It finally gave up on me last year. RIP but a cracking watch.
Now have a Fossil coachman. Nothing fancy I just love the dial.

Mines had 500 services, a new battery every 6 months and cost about as much to own for 10 years (after actually living in a drawer for 5) as the bloody watch itself

For under £200 then a Seiko automatic is pretty much the standard answer. Something like a Seiko Monster is a lot of watch for the money and willhold its value.

Fashion watches like Fossil, Police, Michael Kors, etc are a bit more money on the style rather than the substance. No reason not to go for them if you like the look but in terms of the quality you get more with a proper manufacturer like Citizen or Seiko.

For a bit more you can get something like a Steinhart https://www.steinhartwatches.de/en/dive ... rder=price" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; or Helson https://helsonwatches.com/shop.php#!/Sh ... y=22810070" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which are a bit of a step up in quality (particularly the Steinhart)

Or you can get something a bit different like http://www.timefactors.com/precistaprs18cosc.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; or http://www.timefactors.com/sewillsarmyraf.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which are very good quality for the price.

I had my own retail Jewellers for 25years and have lots of experience of watch brands. You wont go far wrong if you buy a Citizen eco drive watch. Do buy from an independant Jeweller as the ones argos stock are a lower grade product. My personal favorite is the Stiletto

Good call on citizen v good quality at a sensible price , avoid the likes of boss/Armani etc as these are £30 watches sold for £200+ . Just about to trade my tag in after 20 yrs sterling service

They're not quality, you're paying for the name. Stick to a real watch manufacturer. Citizen, Timex, Rotary etc

A lot of nice Citizen Eco Drive watches for under £200, very nice watches for the money. Personally I prefer something Swiss (ideally mechanical), but unfortunately they come with a Swiss price tag too.

Armani, DNKY, Burberry are made by Fossil-you are paying for the name, might as well buy Fossil.

As an everyday watch I went for this Seiko and it has been great for a number of years. Solar meaning no messing with batteries or winding them up, hard wearing and good for swimming

Exactly this.

Armani seems to command the price tag because of the name, along with a lot of other “designer” watches. They won’t be worth threepence in years to come, but a good Rotary or Eco-Drive will stilll hold some value and be of a timeless design.

Ive just been given (this morning, just after my earlier post!) 10 year old Eco-Drive Blue Angel courtesy of my neighbour, who in turn was treated to a brand new one by his Mrs!

It needs a new glass, bezel and general refresh but it’ll probably be he best 100 quid I spend on a watch!
