Best Sunday Dinner

Anyone recommend a good one?

To say its one of our traditional dishes dont half end up with some hit and miss places. Fish and chips on the other hand you can almost always find a good one.

Had one today in Lancaster that looked and sounded promising but was a bit meh. Almost always end up let down. Either too small, crap quality or both.

Can never beat a proper home cooked one. But looking for recommendations for next time we go out for one.

One on the list is The George near Harrogate but the bloody a59 is closed for some reason atm. If anyone can recommend either way will be aiming to go soon.

The Buck Inn at Malham. Do the walk up to Janets Foss and onto Gordale Scar, either to build up a hunger or to walk off the meal.

Talking of Harrogate, there's a nice Italian up the hill on the left from the main theatre. I guess a name would help, but it escapes me.

I have always liked the hare and hounds in foulridge since taken over by those that had the new inn.....I had a very good sunday lunch last year....you can have a mix of chicken/beef and gammon if you are hungry and price is very reasonable....not been for a few months though.

Cracking walk. And an amazing part of the world any time of year. On the list!

Actually at the end of the walk before you head to the foss they have a little sandwich van that actually does roast dinner sandwiches for about £4. Absolutely belting too!

Heard good things but never got round to it. Now on the list too

edit - was recommended by my mate who eats so much meat (and other fine food) he has constant gout and also by a butcher. So definitely on the list now!

Pretty much pointless going out for Sunday dinner. The roast meat has to be kept warm, as do the roast spuds (drys them out and kills flavour) and then the veg has to be cooked at the last minute, but they all take different amounts of time. Hard enough for a home cook doing one dish, impossible for a commercial kitchen.

Make the it yourself, or accept disappointment

Good fish and chips aren’t so easy to find, especially after a night match at Burnley. For a simple dish, it’s amazing how many don’t either do it right or buy / use the wrong products:

Cheap fish
Vegetable oil
Margarine on bread

I’m sure there will be some, but I’ve not had great fish and chips from any around Turf Moor.

The most over-rated of meals..

..two thirds of the plate is cheap vegetables [sometimes over-cooked mush] and if you have an unlucky day, you can get chewy beef or fatty lamb.

- not for me generally, though if you get a really good one, nice and hot, then fair enough.

Nailed it.

I can count on one hand the number of decent Sunday Roasts I've had in pubs and restaurants.

Carveries are crappy, shoddy places to eat.

You've got to hope to blind luck with the kitchen and arrive just at the moment the meat and roasties are ready to serve.

Explains the perrenial disapointment and why the home cooked ones unbeatable.

Saying that a good place should still be able to work out approximately what they need and when.

Around Burnley absolutely agree. Further afield consistently get excellent fish and chips.

Probably becauee of the opposite reasons 1fat makes above. Its quick easy and cooked to order.

The Carvery in Montemar, just 5 minutes walk from Benalmadina Marina on the Costa Del Sol is the best in Europe! Definitely worth a visit if you are on your Holiday's and in that area this summer. Don't forget to ring and book though.

The one on the right on way to Todmorden is good on price for a very fair sunday dinner....its a free house so they dont have to charge silly money.....far from posh but you can pay a lot more for the same or worse......that huge mixed grill is only for the really hungry and they also do suet puddings.

Have eaten there but not Sunday roast and food was excellent. Dont they have a michelin star now?

Also went past on NYE when we went for a walk. It was closed but we tried the door. They let us in and served us while they were busy setting up for the night. Seemed like very nice people who know how to look after customers. Plus one for my two experiences there.

If you're a decent cook, its going to be really hard for a commercial kitchen to nail the core elements of a roast to the level you can do at home. The meat can be served perfect (a lot still get this wrong), but they aren't going to be roasting potatoes and veg to order . ..you'd be waiting too long. A kitchen can produce a decent effort though... a cracking couple of sides can help elevate. I think the white swan do a bit of bone marrow and a good cauli cheese. A lot of places that do a large amount of volume on a sunday will just churn out the standard fayre though.

I don't tend to order them if im honest.

Another simple explanation as to why my mrs is always ****** off when we go out for sunday dinner. Her favourite. She thinks Im having her on when I say we are better going for curry!

Glen View food looks enticing but the place itself is an absolute dump. We tried to get a table and was sat with the pub regulars who then had a go about why were sitting in "their" pub area. Such a shame as the food looked good, but we left before we ordered.

Have to second that. The Glen View does fab pub food, and good prices too.

Toilets are a bit "Longside" but never mind that, the food is A+++ for pub standard
