Martin has come out with some dubious claims about EU tariffs but on the sparkling wine front he is simply being patriotic. Which is a good thing. Surely?

He no doubt judges that due to the Wetherspoons demographic he needs to fly the flag, and will be rewarded for it, not, as some nutter pundits claim, by anticipating a sterling crash, but by getting a bigger customer share.

Chapel Down is as good as most champagnes, global warming has really helped it. Our beer is better than any. We should be keeping our money in the country, giving it to British businesses, who can then reinvest it back in the UK, in staff or facilities. Well done Wetherspoons.

He could start by paying British breweries full price for their wares, instead of paying heavily discounted rates for dregs

On the other hand, there are some pretty good compliments directed at the great and the good who support the EU. Only a few days back you yourself were described as "have a very annoying habit of knowing what you're talking about and being right about a whole lot of stuff". Quite a compliment indeed.

I don't know what you have to do to get that sort of compliment. Oh, hang on, yes I do - you write it yourself.

Good point!

But it must really grind your gears, and I mean really, really, really bug you that on Brexit its pretty much spot on.

Even I didn't think I'd be this right, which is actually fairly terrifying as my vision was fairly apocalyptic!

So why isn't protectionism an unqualified success if we should be keeping everything in-house?

People like you are the reason he backed Brexit. It is not in his business interests whatsoever from a production standpoint but he knows if he brings out this fake flag waving it’ll win favour with the clientele. Simple opportunism, nothing more.

And worth saying as well that British sparkling wine is as good as champagne, due to the soils being identical.

Doesn't change the fact that he sells very little of it, or that he's a massive knob though

You're right about the incompetence of British politicians and the malice of EU ones. But I'm still right in principle. In my opinion of course, because I don't have your Papal infallibility. And perhaps more to the point, I don't believe I have Papal infallibility.

But its nothing than dealing with facts and reality and reaching a dispiriting conclusion.

Spijed wrote:So why isn't protectionism an unqualified success if we should be keeping everything in-house?
Because protectionism guarantees us inferior products as consumers.

That is not the same as being patriotic.

Protectionism means we may choose a Renault over a Ford despite the Ford potentially being better, because of the import tariff.

Patriotism means that if two things are similar in quality we are all mad not to prioritise the British one.

Free trade, zero tariffs, zero protectionism, total consumer choice. That’s the way forward. If one country undercuts us, we should flex our currency accordingly (there will be exceptions sure, but that should be the broad policy).

Of course, the EU may not want to do free trade with us, but we shouldn’t cave in when threatened and bullied. They won’t have a free trade agreement long term with China, Canada, Australia etc and not with us - that is just daft and pessimistic.

Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel. I’m not that surprised that you think it’s a good thing. After all, you also seemed pretty ambivalent about the prospect of bullets flying in N Ireland on another thread, so your colours are well and truly tied to the mast for all to see.

It may come as no surprise to some that Wethspoons shares have gone north since the vote, not that I'm suggesting he has been pro leave for that reason you understand...

JDW's performance lags behind their competitors such as Enterprise Inns though.
