Jimmy Anderson Statue
Jimmy Anderson Statue
Where is it?
If he was from any other town in the country they'd have a massive one in the town centre and would be milking it for every possible commercial opportunity going!

Re: Jimmy Anderson Statue
Milton Keynes have a Greg Rutherford "Leaping man" statue... Drive past this quite a lot. Not sure how much money we would like to spend on statues honouring our sports stars though, and where do you draw the line...?

Maybe we should carve all our local heroes portraits into Pendle like on Mount Rushmore.
We could have Sean, Rocky (seems appropriate), Ian McKellen, JayRod, Rachel Brown and Dave from Bank of Dave.

Was it Garfunkal who seemed to think that his achievements should not be celebrated anywhere in the town because he once confessed to liking Arsenal?

I watched his “who do you think you are” and he was born in Stockport and raised in Bolton.
I’ll be putting on me helmet for incoming.

Ian McKellan was born in Burnley in May 1939 but moved to Wigan shortly before the outbreak of World War Two in September 1939. Apart from the first 4/5 months of his life, I don't believe he has lived in Burnley since.piston broke wrote:What is the link between Ian McKellen and Burnley?

If Jimmy has to have a statue Old Trafford or Lords are much better candidates,i'd favour Lords that's where he took his 500th test wicket a feat unlikely to be matched for a long time.

There’s a great image of Dyche with his arms outstretched. I think we should use this to model a statue similar in style to the “angel of the north’ - but much bigger- and have it situated between the Longside and Bee Hole End overlooking the ground and the town of Burnley.

Re: Jimmy Anderson Statue
Without having any knowledge of Cricket how good is Anderson? If you were to compare him to a footballer who would it be? And how recognisable is he?
Would he be recognised by the average man in the street?
What about if he walked around India or The West Indies. Is he the Beckham of Cricket?

Only four bowlers in the history of the game have taken more test wickets than him and he's probably going to move up one more place before he retires. The three who will be above him were all world class spin bowlers.cricketfieldclarets wrote:Without having any knowledge of Cricket how good is Anderson?
I think it is fair to say he is England's finest ever bowler.

Only one place for the glorification of dyche.. Entering proudsville at the culvert bridge and leaving proudsville on the return, but Burnley councils dullards would no doubt object!Bop wrote:There’s a great image of Dyche with his arms outstretched. He's one of the greatest of all time. If Anderson and Beckham walked down a street in India, more folk there would probably recognise Anderson. Indians love cricket.cricketfieldclarets wrote:Without having any knowledge of Cricket how good is Anderson? If you were to compare him to a footballer who would it be? And how recognisable is he?

In terms of footballers, looking at those that have scored most goals in the history of football, he sits in the same spot as Eusebio at present. Will probably overtake Gerd Muller, but may struggle to catch Romario!
He really should be recognised in this town in a more fitting way than he is. A statue on the Kierby roundabout or the one near Oakmount vets and Centenary Way renamed Jimmy Anderson Way would be fitting.
The majority of sports fans visiting this town will pass by those roundabouts and it would be great to show them he's from our town.

Arguable Fred Trueman would at the rate he took wickets have around 600 test scalps,he tops 300 and in less than half the innings Jimmy has bowled in.Different eras of course so impossible to really compare.ClaretTony wrote:Only four bowlers in the history of the game have taken more test wickets than him and he's probably going to move up one more place before he retires. Re: Jimmy Anderson Statue
The bare minimum is to have a prominent road in Burnley named in his honour, who would instigate this though?
A statue would be fitting as well although I'm sure it would sit better outside OT or Lords.
Is he THE best sports person from the Town to date? I can't think of anyone who has done what he has done across several continents over such a period of time.

Couldn't agree more, both with the statue and naming of the road. I think it has to be somewhere central and somewhere where many people will see it so Centenary Way would be perfect with the statue on one of the roundabouts. The town needs to recognise its greatest ever sportsman.

Like many a kid growing up in the 90's he had a premier league team, when we were unknown and quite frankly poor.
He's a Burnley fan/lad.
But I couldn't care less who he supports, he's the country greatest ever bowler, Burnley finest ever sportsman, and if he is to ever been over taken in any of those, I hope I'm around to see it, because they'll have to be pretty damn amazing!

I know him, I know the family. He's a Burnley fan, has worked at the club in his younger days and was a season ticket holder. Not as though any of that matters, what does matter is he's the town's greatest ever sportsman.Longsider wrote:Sorry to be a pedant but:

Re: Jimmy Anderson Statue
The statue should be in the town centre where it's prominent and safe for people to take photos.
It will attract a few visitors to the town so best to be near local businesses who could benefit.
I don’t really see the benefit of a road being named after someone unless it's for memory purposes when they have passed away.

Re: Jimmy Anderson Statue
Sensible contribution this time . I think the idea of a statue and road are spot on and the post likening him to legendary sporting greats is so true. Rename the flyover and statue near the bus station or somewhere similar. Perhaps the club could do something with the Cricket field stand not rename due to sponsorship deals but perhaps a gate as per Shankley gate at Anfield.

big no from me, hate cricket, but on the subject of him being a claret, he was asked about this on radio 5, fairly muted on the subject, in fact i believe he mentioned another club as one he takes an interest in, not ours.
far more worthy burnley folk to honour if we must have statues cluttering up the place.
