Got his fingers to the peno. Did ok. Wasn't unduly troubled by a poor Tunisian strike force.

Shows off, dived spectacularly again when the ball was fired 8 yards wide of goal. Unlucky with the penalty but other than that he had nothing to do other than field a few back passes.
Re: Pickford.. Verdicts?
Pope would have got to the penalty, rushed out unnecessarily on two occasions which could have cost us.

Re: Pickford.. Verdicts?
Would have saved the penalty had he not taken a little move to his left.
He went playing at left back when Tunisia were wrongly ruled offside, which could have been problematic.
There's a mistake in him, that's for sure.

Re: Pickford.. Verdicts?
Had very little to do but his hoof out to Trips, when easier passes were on, brought us a bit of bother and he was lucky with a poor offside decision when he charged out to LB.
Leaving his line is still his biggest weakness.

Straightforward game for him so nothing to compliment or criticise him for.

You can't criticise or blame him after that.
Possibly after getting his hand to the pen he should have saved it but that would be harsh

I would say he won't get an easier 90 minutes all tournament, but we play Panama on Sunday so he probably will, did nothing wrong because he had nothing to deal with.

He dives through the air like a ballet dancer... even when the ball is going 10m wide.
His "sweeper keeper" plastic style of running with the ball for the sake of it is going to cost us. This isn't the first time he's kicked the ball close-range into danger, luckily tonight he got off with an offside that wasn't.
He will cost us. Mark my words

Re: Pickford.. Verdicts?
Pickford had a 69% pass success rate and it felt watching it that his long passes didn’t go anywhere but his short ones were OK.
He didn’t make a save, and has had a lot of goals whistling past him this season. I’m not yet convinced he will save the crucial shot that matters (probably when 1-1 against Brazil in the quarters).
I’m not convinced either by Southgate’s priority of retaining possession at the back. It nearly cost us twice tonight, and sooner or later it will.

It was one of them games where he didn't have to do much.taio wrote:Straightforward game for him so nothing to compliment or criticise him for.
But you can criticise him for unnecessarily running out of his area into the left back position.
If he had have committed to go to his right for the penalty, then he would have saved it. But you can't criticise him for that.

Keepers will always get the benefit of the doubt with spot kicks,if the score had finished 1-1 this may have been highlighted more,i'm still not convinced about Pickford's shot-stopping,but Gareth can't really drop him now unless he has a howler.starting_11 wrote:Except a penalty he should have saved.

Are you serious or taking the p!55??? Did you even watch the game? He hardly had anything to do but his kicking generally was woeful - one went out of play Jensen-style when he was under no pressure at all.Japebe43 wrote:Did fine.. Very good with his feet.

Re: Pickford.. Verdicts?
As Scouse says, Pickford's distribution was poor. Not sure where it has come from that his kicking is any good. He might look good technically however it is usually ineffective.

Kicking was ok, clearly better than Pope's but not what it's bigged up to be. Should have saved the penalty having guessed correctly, he got nowhere near the corner.

Re: Pickford.. Verdicts?
Had very little of note to do. So hard to say either way. And you can never criticise a keeper for not saving a penalty. At least he went the right way.
But he just doesnt fill me with too much confidence. And no keeper has since David Seaman. He just doesnt look like a keeper. Hes obviously not small. But the likes of Seaman were 'proper' keepers. Athletic as Pickford. But as big as Pope and physical too.
Imo too much focus on keepers being able to play it out over making saves, coming for crosses, commanding their box, leading from the back.

Re: Pickford.. Verdicts?
Had nothing to do, little chance with the penalty, kicks better than Pope, pinged some nice balls right onto the head of Kane, inch perfect. Can't nit pick after that performance against a team who had no intention of scoring a goal, winning the game or even creating a chance.

Re: Pickford.. Verdicts?
pope is THE in form keeper in Britain, pickford had nothing to do apart from goal kicks, persist with him, and england will faulter, he is a maniac under pressure. Pope is ten times more reliable. we know it, the fans elsewhere know it, but the drones in charge see it differently for some inexplicable reason.

Not being remotely biased here, but Nick wouldn't just have saved that pen, he'd have caught the ball while he was at it.

Re: Pickford.. Verdicts?
Too many risks taken unnecessarily, but he’s probably been instructed to do that. Kicked to touch too much when under pressure - that’s also a result of being told to play “sweeper”. His distribution that everybody raves about was diabolical at times, and when he did it well, it looked lucky to me.

Re: Pickford.. Verdicts?
I thought the same. Not much evidence to rate him on but this idea his passing is in a different league to Pope’s is baffling when under almost no pressure he kicks the ball like the Beast.scouseclaret wrote:Are you serious or taking the p!55??? A keeper shouldn’t be expected to save a penalty but having guessed the right way they should be expected to keep out a poorly hit shot a few feet from the corner. I’m not having a dig at Pickford but he should have kept that penalty out.boatshed bill wrote:I don't think a goalkeeper should ever be expected to save a penalty.

Liverpool fans take the p!ss out of Pickford for having “unusually short arms for a goalkeeper”. I think they may have a point. It’s not that he’s small , but a goalie with normal length arms would have saved that pen!

Re: Pickford.. Verdicts?
whilst they were waiting to take the penalty, ashley young came running up to pickford having had instructions from the bench on which way the pen would go and he still didn't save it. its still a bit harsh to criticise a keeper for not saving a penalty though.
he was largely untroubled otherwise but doesn't command his area at all, he's too concerned with camera saves and his much-lauded kicking was average at best. said it before, he'll cost us.

Re: Pickford.. Verdicts?
The squad should be practising penalties in training regularly and if they are we could end up in a scenario where Nick Pope comes on for a penalty shoot out like Tim Krul did for Holland the other year. He's the tallest keeper, fills the most space and is most likely to make the saves needed to win a shoot out. Unconventional I know, but it could work for England.

He kicked the ball out of play 4 times - so much for his distribution. Unlucky with the pen. He’s the favourite of the goalkeeping coach so he’ll be there for a while

He was lucky for the one in the second half where Khazri got in behind, came miles off his line and didn't get there, but an incorrect offside flag saved him. Also thought his kicking was a bit meh.

Too little - not much taller than Mick Finn.
Re: Pickford.. Verdicts?
It was a poor penalty and Pickford threw himself without eye on ball. Pope - would have been a simple save, with his added height/length.
Pickford also rushed out and caused potential danger, when ball a long way away from goal.
Always had an anguished look. Not good.
Pope keeps it calm. All this good with his feet mullarky...served no purpose. Even played ball short when danger potential.
England delusional, if they think playing continental passing will win stuff. Every team can pass well or better. English style better suited to creating havoc.
Referees might be the big problem!
