ODI v Test cricket

Post by Spijed » Sun Jun 24, 2018 7:15 pm

Is there anyway for us to produce good quality test cricketers, bar the odd one like Anderson, Broad or Root.

We are brilliant at one day cricket but very weak when it comes to playing five day test matches.

English cricket needs a clear strategy for the longer form of the game as most players seem more interested in throwing the bat at every ball these days.

There's far more money to be made (for players and administrators) throwing the bat at the ball which will always be a problem.

Plenty of other countries have produced players who have excelled in both (or even all three) forms of the game so it's not impossible.

I think you're exaggerating England being so bad at Test cricket.
Were a good spinner and opening batsman short of a very good team.

Look back through history and very few England teams will have had all 11 very good for the level.

We have put a lot more emphasis on white ball cricket since Strauss took over which might change back if we win the world cup.

Agreed, we've not got bad test cricketers but they sometimes don't play the game like a test match.

However, with Cook, Anderson and Broad in the latter part of their careers with no obvious replacements on the horizon, our test match future is looking pretty bleak.

Once Anderson & Broad go who have we got in the wings?

It doesn't really matter how bad England become at test cricket if there is no-one to play against. Apart from Australia i'm not sure any other country is that bothered. For me, test cricket is the best game in the world and I fear for it. It pains me to watch a test match from the west indies with no-one in the stadium. Tragic.

As said above, there isn't really the appetite to pay for and watch test match cricket in most other cricket countries. In England it's regularly sold out and Australia too if they're playing us or anyone decent, but most cricket lovers these days can't focus on the longer game or understand the strategies involved in winning a 5 day match. I fear for test match cricket and it's demise would be so, so sad as I for one absolutely love it and the packed grounds in England prove I'm not alone.
