Re: FAO Spades
My cheat sheet (not fool-proof, but just about reliable enough to get me through life without folk thinking I'm home-schooled) for was/were:
Was=first & third person singular past tense; I was acting like a tw@t/he was acting like a tw@t/it was a tw@ttish thing to do.
Were=second person/third person past tense, or plural (this is a cheat sheet, remember); you were being a tw@t/they were acting like tw@ts. erm...
...were also=1st/2nd/3rd person present tense singular/plural hypothetical; If I were a unicorn/if you were a unicorn/if he were a unicorn!
erm...
er...hang on a minute, most of what I've just posted is correct but also at the same time nonsense depending on context.
In fact, ignore everything I've just said.
Good luck, anyway, IIBTW!

Re: FAO Spades
It grieves me to say it, Spiral, but I'm afraid you are wrong regarding is and are.
upanatem has it right when he says,
"None of them: 'none' is the subject of the sentence and I believe this is singular. 'of them' is a phrase, and, although 'them' is plural, it is not the subject of the sentence, and hence does not dictate that the ensuing verb be plural. The subject of the sentence dictates whether the verb be singular or plural. Eg. 'one of the boys was lagging behind'. 'one' is the subject, and hence the verb 'was' is singular irrespective of the ensuing phrase 'of the boys'."
None = not one (singular). It is correct to say, "Not one of them is...", therefore it is correct to say, "None of them is..."
Many(plural). It is correct to say, "Not many of them are..."

If it be your will, a complicated subject but Spiral's response above will do to be going on with.
I'm delighted to agree with Spiral on one thing this evening

What I am surprised at is that spadesclaret can actually be bothered? This is just me, but I'd be way too lazy to do much. No doubt see them again later.
