Re: ARTICLE: Have Burnley ditched moves for Dawson and Jay Rod?
I definitely agree with this and I've tried to limit any players I mention to those in the UK market and our price range. I only included Zuber because you can find a surprising amount of information about him on the Interweb (especially if you go to the trouble of clicking the translate button). The readily available information includes comments on him by coaches and other players, personal interviews at multiple stages in his career and even recorded interviews, like the one by alexi_lalas on sound cloud (thankfully in English).Paul Waine wrote:
Garlick has introduced the rigour of the recruitment industry to signing players, a tactic that has led to the club focusing on those playing in Britain.
“Our recruitment team prefers to keep it focused on things that are easily accessible to us,” he says. “In terms of personal characteristics, what they do when they are off the pitch? Do they go off to the casino or home to their wives?
“That detail is really important and it’s a lot easier to do that and reference people in the UK or Ireland. Who are his last five managers, sporting directors and chairmen, and speak to them all. I’m in recruitment so that’s what I do, it’s my bread and butter. If they have bad habits we don’t want them, and for those in Germany or Spain and so on it’s just harder to get that real data.”
It isn't always the case for players, but Steven doesn't appear to be a stranger to giving interviews. Although he doesn't seem to have a problem making journalists wait until he has finished his training before sitting down to talk, even when he puts in an extra hour. The most unusual aspect of his media appearance is that it is overwhelmingly positive in terms of his attitude, commitment, work ethic and personality.
I would post a selection of links, or a more detailed summary, but nobody would read it or follow them
From the character picture I got of him I think he would be a perfect fit for us, so I made an exception in his case. The only snag we might encounter is if he has it in mind to follow Julian Nagelsmann to RB Leipzig.

Nixon says Jay Rod is expensive but definitely possible. Might be difficult if Rondon leaves for Newcastle.

They simply can’t get to an agreement on the fee. Jay is frustrated but unwilling to down tools.

Re: ARTICLE: Have Burnley ditched moves for Dawson and Jay Rod?
I know we've had a fair success taking players, in theory their best players, from just relegated teams, and relegated from the Championship at that and I know this is a just relegated Premier League team but if your impassive Jay didn't pull up any trees, he's good overall yes, and Dawson had a good keeper behind him and good defensive partners and WBA defending was very poor, so paying over the odds for them seems too risky, IMO. Especially with Jay s type of recent injury.ClaretTony wrote:£25 million for the pair apparently a few weeks ago - now being reported that we'll go up to 30 but they want 40.
if we're losing Mee or Tarks Ok, but if not would he play instead of either, so 20 Million for cover?
Jay Rod could play the 10 that Hendricks was played in but again 20 Million, is he that much better than Jeff?
Hard work this Transfer Business.
Re: ARTICLE: Have Burnley ditched moves for Dawson and Jay Rod?
I'd rather we brought in James Collins as a free transfer to play 3rd/4th choice and put the £20M that we'd have to pay for Dawson towards an attacking player. Dawson is 28 year old, not gonna slot straight into the side and will command a big fee/wages. We honestly should've moved on from Dawson 6 weeks ago but here we are, still chasing a player 4 years later. I don't understand how it's seemingly so difficult to find a 3rd/4th choice central defender, Jack O'Connell, James Chester, Liam Moore, i'd even take John Terry for a year if we're that desperate although he'll probably be retired once we get the deal done in 3 years. We make this transfer malarkey awfully difficult sometimes.
We choose to shop in the inflated British market yet refuse to pay the going rate until we end up forced to with the window closing. Dyche every year, moans to the local papers, clearly frustrated, well it's about time we pull our finger out and back the guy, if he wants Dawson, go and get him Dawson, it's the least Dyche deserves after masterminding 5 years of success and probably £400M+ income.

I'd disagree with that.Mala591 wrote:Two very good footballers but they are not of the quality to significantly improve on our current squad.
Dawson will become at the very least 3rd choice and push Long down to 4th - we don't even have a 4th at the moment.
And Jay Rod would push Wells down the pecking order.
They'd both improve the depth of our squad quite a lot I'd say.

£40M to improve the squad depth? £20M for a 3rd choice 28 year old central defender who wants paying £75k p/w is absurd.DustyBawls wrote:I'd disagree with that.

Re: ARTICLE: Have Burnley ditched moves for Dawson and Jay Rod?
Given the financial troubles at Villa I'm amazed we haven't enquired about James Chester. Stoke have offered £8m this morning apparently so that's probably the stumbling block as £8m for a 29 year old doesn't scream "value". However, compared to Dawson at £20m it doesn't seem too bad!KRBFC wrote:I'd rather we brought in James Collins as a free transfer to play 3rd/4th choice and put the £20M that we'd have to pay for Dawson towards an attacking player. Re: ARTICLE: Have Burnley ditched moves for Dawson and Jay Rod?
It must be so difficult to get a deal over the line with both clubs pushing hard for the best deal
Re: ARTICLE: Have Burnley ditched moves for Dawson and Jay Rod?
Anyone will do for us, it's not like Dawson will be some marquee superstar signing, he'll be a 3rd choice central defender. There's a bunch of Championship defenders capable of filling that role for a fraction of the price, I'd rather we brought in the next Tarkowski but wouldn't be too bothered if we brought in Collins providing the money we would've spent on Dawson gets re-invested in other areas. Aden Flint would've been fine, already gone to Boro for £5M though.jlup1980 wrote:Given the financial troubles at Villa I'm amazed we haven't enquired about James Chester. Re: ARTICLE: Have Burnley ditched moves for Dawson and Jay Rod?
We have history for faffing around in the market, infact 4 years ago, we were in the same position right now, faffing over a fee for Dawson when WBA wanted £3.5M yet after countless offers we still weren't able to get close, too much offered in instalments apparently. We faffed all summer for Jeff Hendrick and Dale Stephens, we luckily got Hendrick on deadline day, thankfully Hull's bid on deadline day got rejected. Dyche shares my frustration, he does most windows, so I'm not the only one.ClaretTony wrote:You won't know because you still don't seem to have a clue how it works

Because where i’m sat he played only 2/3 of the games for a side who couldn’t get promoted from a league below us and was slower than a bus full of elephants going up a hill. He looks about 10 years older at the end of every game he plays in.
And that’s before you even get into the “no knobheads” policy we have in the dressing room and Terry’s ego dealing with being 3/4th choice for us. And the very idea of him moving up north.
It’s a nonsense suggestion.

Re: ARTICLE: Have Burnley ditched moves for Dawson and Jay Rod?
Not really, I just think Terry would be an excellent last minute cover option, certainly not first choice on the list at all, James Collins very much the same. I'd be happy with either as 3rd/4th choice with the money being spent elsewhere on the team. If you don't rate Terry and think he's a knobhead, that is your opinion and I'm certainly not going to argue it with you but I feel like you ignored the other 3 I mentioned first purposely to dig and argue.Socrates wrote:You’re so predictable

Re: ARTICLE: Have Burnley ditched moves for Dawson and Jay Rod?
The club need to come to terms with the fact that the market has moved on again, make a decision on whether we want to move forward in quality or were happy to stay the same.
We demanded £25million for Michael Keane and got it. I’d argue that Alfie Mawson is as good, if not better than him and he’s the same age as Keane was when we sold him. The £20million Swansea are quoting is about market value.
West Brom want £20million for Rodriguez, we paid £15million for Wood with no Premier League experience and sold Andre Gray for £18million, again, it’s market value in this climate.
Jack Cork was an absolute fluke of a signing that will scarcely be repeated. He was worth much more than £8million.

Dyche and the players have said several times that we do not do egos at the club.
If you look in the dictionary at the definition of ego - it says John Terry and a picture of him in his Chelsea strip collecting a cup in a game he did not play in.
It’s a ridiculous suggestion - his legs have gone and he would cost a fortune in wages. On top of this all the rest of the team would be paranoid about their wives.

Exactly this. We Can't demand 25 million for Keane and then refuse to pay the same kind of money for Mawson. Our transfer policy is all over the place, it seems as though we're just throwing darts at the same list of 5 or 6 players that we were last summer. Someone should tell the recruitment team there is a whole world of footballers out there!UpTheClaretsFCBK wrote:The club need to come to terms with the fact that the market has moved on again, make a decision on whether we want to move forward in quality or were happy to stay the same.

Sell on value is not what we should base all our signings on. At 20mill would he help the team stay in the division for a couple of years? If yes then that is value for money surely? We shouldn't always think about buying players that eventually the big boys will steal, maybe we can be the bigger boys stealing players now we are at the top table.

WBA played a European Friendly at the weekend and had 12 subs
Dawson was the only sub not used
They are holding out for top fee but will have to sell before deadline and Burnley are the only team in for him.

Given his recent comments about having to prob break our transfer record again, it would appear he wants us to sign them but the Chairman doesn't want to pay these type of fees
Mawson is likely to cost more than 20 mill anyway

It might help the club if they were not shopping exclusively in the world's most expensive market - the English Market.
We are going into Harrods and expecting to pay Aldi prices.
If only we could expand our horizons.
Will we get to Turkey? Can't help thinking Ireland is about as far as the club staff wants to go, will the club scouts that would like to watch any potential game in Turkey be able to sort their passports so they can travel out prior to the game?.
