Ridiculous two hats.

Ive told him he wont be watching with me

He's ridiculous. English Celtic fan who gives it all the "up the RA" nonsense. He's from Blackpool ffs. I'm more Irish than him. I despise two-hatteryImploding Turtle wrote:Why do you care?

There's plenty of players who were born in England who've played for other countries thanks to equally tenuous links.

Re: People born in England who make some effected claim to support other countries
Effect comes from Latin efficere, from ex-, "out", and facere, "to cause/make/do". When you effect something, you cause something to exist that didn't exist before: first it was in the darkness of nothingness, then it comes "out" into the world of reality. Notice the parallel to ex- in exist.thatdberight wrote:It's your right to be wrong.
He is creating a claim, thus it is effected

Re: People born in England who make some effected claim to support other countries
In the context you've used it, you're claiming it's an affectation. It's affected. I understand the etymology of 'effect' and 'affect' both as verbs and nouns.ZizkovClaret wrote:Effect comes from Latin efficere, from ex-, "out", and facere, "to cause/make/do". thousands of people with mixed United kingdom roots, scots, welsh, Irish, they have long standing affinities with the familial countries because its part of their childhood influences.
Same applies to other countries.

Re: People born in England who make some effected claim to support other countries
No. I think you're right. My kids were born in a different country to me. While I expect they have some fondness for my country of birth and where I grew up, I expect them to support their country, even (especially?) against mine. Anything else would be weird and reflect a failure on my part. If my kids supported my country of birth, I'd suggest they **** off there if they like it so much.ZizkovClaret wrote:He's such a cock about it though haha

Re: People born in England who make some effected claim to support other countries
I've tried getting behind France since I've been here 6 years seems only fair. To be honest my heart isn't in it, I'm just not that bothered.
I think it's one of those things which we don't really have a choice about. It's more of a gut thing.
As a Burnley supporter I can't explain my elation when we win, same with England. I think our clubs (or countries) choose us rather than the other way round.

Re: People born in England who make some effected claim to support other countries
Same with me. I was born here but raised in Scotland and Scotland was where i started to love football (Rangers and Morton). Moved to England in 94 and Euro 96 was the first tournament i was interested in that had home nations. I still can't remember a half-hour of football more exciting that the England/Germany extra-time.Wile E Coyote wrote:I was born in Burnley of scottish parents, I had years of being taken to Hampden Park by relatives, then similar in England at Wembley !

Hated the Scotland v England result though. And be in no doubt i'm always Scotland before England. But i'd love to see England win this thing now.

Re: People born in England who make some effected claim to support other countries
It's a bit like saying all Cricketers who play for England were born there .
Not sure how it all works as I sound very Burnley yep born in Ireland . I know a hell of a lot of Irish lads who follow the international side that are born in England but are more Irish than the Irish if you get my drift .

Conceived in British Guyana, born in Scotland, raised in England.
Now you know why I'm such a mover on the dance floor, like food that isn't strictly good for you and am happy for England to win the World Cup

Re: People born in England who make some effected claim to support other countries
People are entitled to support who they want.
I moved to London from Padiham (similar places) in 1972 and for the past 40 odd years have lived in either Surrey or Hampshire. I support Lancashire CC and Lowerhouse of course.
My son born and bred in the south is a Burnley FC fan as a result of my influence.
Barnes could end up playing for Austria.
Some people need to relax and have a coke, have a smoke.

I would never Equate Diverse London with insular Padiham (similar places)?Corky wrote:People are entitled to support who they want.

Maybe if the English treated immigrant families better, their children wouldn't feel so affiliated to their parents countries.

You're right. It's terrible for them here. That's why they don't come any more. Oh, no, hang on a mo. That's not right.timshorts wrote:Maybe if the English treated immigrant families better, their children wouldn't feel so affiliated to their parents countries.

We're better than places more close to some of their homes, where they set immigrants on fire and the police call it suicide.thatdberight wrote:You're right. It's terrible for them here. That's why they don't come any more. Oh, no, hang on a mo. That's not right.
Though i guess i should be careful about giving the far-right any ideas.

Lot of it’s for attention. “I’m 1/4 Irish therefore I support Ireland”, etc
